Yes 20 years ago I loved the perfect cars and the good paint jobs. Now I just like seeing them running, junky or whatever. I use to not get the whole original and "patina" or whatever but the older I get the more I like the stuff in running original condition. I guess it's as I get older and realize how much those cars and the stuff costs to do that, and that those guys worry if a bird poops on it, if it's wet outside, raining dusty a rock bounces off it as he is running down the highway. I don't mind a backyard 20ft paintjob either thank it looks fine and protects the vehicle and gives it a decent look.
You can tell that Derek really cares about his viewers. I mean who else would make a huge mistake like that paint run on purpose just so that he can show us how to fix it? Thanks buddy. It is very much appreciated.
I concur. My first car was a '67 Charger with a slightly heated up 440 Magnum, and the stock drums all 'round. After a few hard applications the slowin-down situation got, uh, "interesting".
The Duster looks absolutely beautiful! The shine, the stripes, the hood, the wheels and tires, the dash and instrument cluster all make for a good combination so far. Looking forward to the next installment and very excited for whoever wins it. Excellent job!
There’s no denying Derek is one of the hardest working people you’ll ever see. Not just of UA-cam content providers, but amongst all men. He goes over and above his normal unsustainable pace, going the extra eleven-seventy miles for his fans. Kudos to a guy.
The Duster looks awesome. I’m really digging the look you went for on it. The Craiger wheels and flat black hood with the stripes made the look. I hope whoever wins it appreciates the look you want for, I know I would. Look forward to the next episode.
This has taken me back to my late teens! I can remember setting up a spray booth in my parents double garage. I used frame tent poles and polythene with a damp floor to keep the dust down. Before I started I had 4 old oil filled radiators plugged in to get the garage warm. I can still picture my mini and it's island blue paint with a white roof!!
@@BrianMagnafici-mw5xh Unfortunately I don't it was 30 years ago, I did take pics but I'd used an old point and shoot camera. I'm going to my parents house tonight and I'll have a hunt in the attic through the family albums!!!!
I did exactly the same thing, but without the tent. My Mini was Almond Green with an Old English White roof, 1275A+ Metro engine, Cooper disks, Cooper perforated wheels, later genuine Minilites, negative camber and lowered all round with the obligatory RC40 exhaust.
@@jameseastwood4984 I had a similar set up engine wise with a 1275 engine and a set of Cooper S reverse rims until I could afford minilites .I can remember the first MOT , after the rebuild, and the reaction I got. I sure hope who ever gets this work of art treats it with care and don't beat it. Give the man who has worked hard on this sweet ride an atta boy. Enjoy the ride. Most impressed with the whole family.
Starting to dig the LS Duster. I was so happy to see the choice of wheels. Shame they just don't look quite like the OG Cragar SS but How can you go wrong with a fresh set of Cragars.. Loving the transformation.
That "LS 318" label got me thinking about having fun with all the experts you meet on the street. "Yeah, it's a special Chrysler factory motor, they de-stroked a firedome hemi to beat NASCAR rules." "You've heard of V-8 Vegas? This motor's a Chevy factory prototype built for the Vega concept car. It's really a 305, I just put 318 on there cuz Mopar."
Thank you Derek for your attention to detail, especially on a car you’re not even keeping but giving away, all the perfect touches for some lucky winner, won’t be me, never that lucky. lol. True VGG fans would agree, best content on you tube !

Very cool transformation. I’ve always been a GM guy but this duster is slick with those stripes, hood, and wheels. It really makes it look like a different rig! 👍👍
Man do I love this car. Really love how it's turning out so far. Can't wait to see the interior. I have bought some stuff so fingers crossed it could be mine. If not it will go to a very lucky family. Thank you Derek for doing stuff like this it's really awesome.

Good looking car, dusters have always been one of my favourites, particularly the 75 duster hang 10. Keep up the solid work. Thanks for putting out solid videos!
My favorite build series of any show I’ve ever watched. I was an 80’s teenager and you rebuilt her looking almost exactly like my first ride. Mine was a factory 3 speed and Rallye rims. Oh, disc up front and a set of air shocks courtesy of the previous owner.
I was hoping the steel wheels would stay, I was wrong. The cragars brought it right out of the seventies. Looks awesome. Nice driver. Might be my favorite VG builds.
In 1981 I had a 72' Duster with a 383, 8 3/4 rear(also shortened since I could not find one for the duster. Hooker fender-well headers, 727 reverse manual valve body, engine redone 11:1 comp, hairy cam, edelbrock high rise holly 780 jetted out. 490hp at the wheels. Alright, ya got me. I’m not a mopar guy or a gambler but you convinced me to take a shot at the give away. Plus supporting you and your family is a big plus
Really dig your episodes. Taught me a lot. I saw a brand new Camaro the other day. Amazing how unique creativity seems to have disappeared in car styling. Every car is starting to look the same.
Good move on the 8-3/4. I’ve had slant sixes get the better of the AAM 7-1/4. A stock 318 can terminate one in short order, destined for certain failure behind anything even mildly warmed over…
Looks Good.. you’re better off using a 1.3 or 1.4 for clear. In cold weather you wanna heat the clear. Boil a bunch of water then pour it in a bucket. Then set your cans of clear and hardener in there Let ‘em warm up Dutch oven style. (You can set them in front of a heater also). When the components are nice and warm, mix and spray. Trust me. Way less likely to run and it’ll lay down smooth. Set your gun about 29 psi at the cap. Material about 2 1/2 -3 turns out from fully closed and keep the wet spot movin’
P.S. get away from the hvlp guns plenty of budget conventional or lvlp guns out there. Heating the clear not only makes it flash quicker. It makes it thin out. Cut your reducer down to 5% or less.
Gas station attendant forgot the hood pins on my brother's 68 Roadrunner. 95 mph on open road and the hood went over the roof. No other damage but he never painted the replacement hood. Looked good. I repainted my Ranchero and did the hood in 1/2 flat 1/2 semi gloss. No glare off hood!

Next time you spray pull the hose over your right shoulder bring it around your back and grab it with your left hand at your left hip. Keeps the hose out of the way and your hip pulls the hose around instead of constantly having to whip and pull. I love your videos my friend!

I had 4:11's in my 8 3/4" with a 340 4-speed in a '74 duster (original 225ci auto car) with a very similar color. 3:55's were a much better street gear. Rear springs were a nightmare, even after grabbing V8 A-body leafs, my hyped up 349 twisted the crap out of them. Torsion bars suck even worse, especially when you also do a V8 swap with full length headers, they got flattened multiple times. Miss that car.

We trued to restore one of these years ago but life got in the way seriously and we had to let it go. I’m sure if by some miracle this ole USAF vet or his son won it tears would flow…. But if someone else wins we will have some warm shirts… love what you do!
You are quickly becoming on of my favorite channels on this here youtube. The Duster is talking to me in ways a car hasn't talked to me in a long time...I think I'm in love. Just ordered a couple shirts in hopes that I may get lucky enough to experience the glory of that LS318 mad scientist build. Keep up the great work Derek! God bless
Absolutely I did a review for volunteer Muffler and performance they are awesome

You have created my dream car. Everything you have done to this Duster is awesome!
Of all the cars youve fixed up, this one is my favorite. Its just perfect to my eyes.
Love what you did to this car. This was my first car at 17 years old. Super stoked about contest.
Next time you spray pull the hose over your right shoulder bring it around your back and grab it with your left hand at your left hip. Keeps the hose out of the way and your hip pulls the hose around instead of constantly having to whip and pull. I love your videos my friend!
Thanks VGG , One awesome looking Chrysler . Disabled Army Veteran Alabama , old school mechanic. Be safe and take care .
I was 15 when I left New Orleans Hitchin anywhere . Fayette co Missouri a blue 73 duster pulled over two beautiful girls my age
Missy and Loretta..
I reckon that was 79 or 80 ?
Summer of 79.
Thanks for taking me back.
That maybe was Jackson county which ever .
Have a great day .
I love the wheels on that car! Some people don't like Cragars but I love them! 😊
Love that you’re in Cookeville. Glad to see a local shop doing great work.
If you ever need space or help in Cookeville hit me up.
I bought one new in 1973, it was yellow with a black stripe, with a half black vinyl top with black interior
I love this car. My best friend had a 71 duster and we spent untold hours cruising around in it. Same color.

So glad it kept the basic color ❤ This thing is so unbelievably cool I'm in love. ❤
I'm not in the market for a vehicle, but I'd be proud to own that! Nice work, Derek. It came out beautiful!
Complete music geek thing here, but I love that music at 16:30!! I have started writing a song inspired by it.
The plastic/painter's tape combo stuff is awesome on any project..garage or house!
That vice grip clear is AMAZING....i wiped it on my Torino.....recommend the spray method definitely....
I had an 86 Camaro and put 275 60/15s on the back and 235 60/15s on the front. Fullset GY Eagles. It looked great! Had comments on the tires/wheels combo all the time. Lol It was a hella fun car too! Chev 305
The wheel and tires you went with couldn't have been better. Man they look amazing
Well Derek your store is about to light up as people want there name in the hat for this beauty! You are gifted with taste! That rod looks gr8. Heading to your store right now!
I was setting and watching while waiting for a Lyft ride, after the segment where Derek hes getting old and can't take the paint fumes, I get pinged for a pickup at a local hospital, an old timer with oxygen tanks...
It was a long ride and we talked. Long story short, he grew up painting cars....
Wear those respirators guys.
I’d strip the paint off using media blasters normally but I have to say it looks just amazing. Just beautiful!
Love what you have done with the duster, I had a 73 Gold Duster years ago and been wanting another since I sold I back in 1986
just piped the audio through a professional PA system at volume. Fellers............You're gonna wanna win that baby. The sound is incredible. The guy knows but whoever wins is in for a treat
A good color would be Gold color on top, Chocolate brown from the creese, at the top of the door going down.
I love seeing Dusters get new life. My Grandpa had an old Duster rusting in a field. My brother and i used to pretend we were working on it.
