MUSCLE CAR REVIVAL After 20+ Years - '64 Pontiac Lemans

  • I snagged this 1964 Pontiac Lemans with a 400 and a 4 speed off marketplace, so we take it back home to wrench on it and bring it back to life. It's a pontiac, so it is of course totally uneventful.

    Hey Dalton, as someone who got seriously ill from spraying spray paint and being around the fumes, even with a KN 95 mask, I found a decent dual filter painter’s mask on EBay for a surprisingly low cost.
    I won’t spray without it anymore.
    If you don’t want to use one for big spraying jobs, please at least get one for JD, his lungs are still young and they’re the only set he’ll ever have.

      I’ve told him similar, but without that kind of experience. My old man briefly met the man who invented spray paint cans, and he said he would never personally use one because of breathing paint. Told my dad he shouldn’t use them either. Dude was rich af. Forget exactly how they met I think the guy was friends with his boss or something.

      I literally painting my last vehicle about three vehicles go just using a mask and yeah, your eyes are even at North us so basically, now I have a full face shield for Spring or any super noxious fuels but mostly just spring anything via cans or paint it might help to add that if people don’t know what I’m talking about it’s a full face with a respirator included, which you can swap out the filters at least up here in Calgary There’s a place called KMS tools and U fusion get the filters and even a face mask for a decent price

    Can confirm as a motorcycle mechanic that 7:15 is most certainly an industry term. I'm also from the U.K so can confirm it's even an inter continental one. Finally! Someone who is not a huge fan of patina, loves white lettered tires, chrome mags, and a shiny car. Doesn't have to be perfect, just look cool. I get so disappointed when I see other people take an iconic American Muscle Car, throw tons of money at the engine, suspension, and sometimes interior but refuse to address the rust on and under the car because it looks "cool." A 1952 International pickup farm truck might look ok with patina, but not a muscle car. I'm old enough to remember when most of these cars were new. I get repairing/rebuilding on a budget. We've all had to do that, but when you have a little cash and really sink your teeth into something, you're a damn fine mechanic. This build is going to be a treat. First year of the iconic GTO/LeMans/Tempest body style through 67. It's gonna be fun. You're funny as hell, too. The well-spoken but deadpan delivery is a hoot. Keep on rocking!

    • @petelattimer6808
      @petelattimer6808 22 дні тому +2

      agreed. to me, patina is just a pile of junk you cant be bothered/afford to fix properly so you throw money at the wrong areas of the car. Patina on something like the Holey Goat tells its story. on a 'regular' vehicle, it just makes it look worn out and ready to be put in its final resting place/parted out.

    • @garybush6117
      @garybush6117 22 дні тому +2

      @@petelattimer6808 Absolutely agree, but some people just LOVE their patina. I was at a car show last year, and a friend and I were looking at a 1962 Chrysler 300 Sport Coupe with a factory manual floor shift. Can't remember if it was a 383 or a 413. The car was in great shape but had surface rust on the body (patina) and needed an interior. No big deal. I told my friend that this car was great, it just needed a decent paint job, and new seat upholstery and carpet. I told him that the "patina" made the car look like a rust bucket. Well, the owner of the car (whom I didn't know) overheard me and got really ticked off and offended because he heard me say that I didn't like patina and beat up seats on a classic car. It was not my intention to insult the guy or his car, I didn't know he was listening to my conversation. At any rate, I just walked away. I felt sorry for the car. It deserved a better owner. And I've never seen the car again. If the guy loves rust, more power to him.

    • @garybush6117
      @garybush6117 10 днів тому

      @@michaelharper-uw3dn Patina has its place like I mentioned above. If I were attending a car show/cruise-in and saw a patina car, such as maybe a classic Dodge Charger or some other classic, it wouldn't matter to me how much money was thrown at the engine or undercarriage. All I would see in my mind's eye is a rust bucket POS. My show cars were never perfect but they were clean, detailed and as rust free as I could make them. But whatever floats their boat, I guess.

    Dalton has already ordered $6,000 in parts for this car. He really really likes this car and I do too! It’s one of the rare purchases that doesn’t have see thru floor pans and I really can’t see anything at all wrong with the body, especially in the rear quarters where most muscle cars have either major rust or major body filler. I would rather start with a good body because the mechanical side is easy. Starting with a mechanically sound car that has a terrible body is MUCH more work in the end.

    God I love it Dalton!!!! I agree with everything you did to it but I might have opted for a dual service master cylinder. I have crap for luck with old rusty brake lines. I definitely love the sound, the air shocks, and the Cragars!!!! One thing I will never understand is why people think it's cool to lower their trucks. A truck is meant to be lifted. I see duallies running around scraping the ground. What the hell good is that when it's time to hook the gooseneck up? It's like putting a lift kit on a Corvette. Blasphemy as far as I'm concerned. And then I've seen them lower them and put air bags on it. They go on a long road trip and guess what fails? The bags!!! So they have their other toys loaded up on a gooseneck being pulled by what looks like a sparkler running down the road. Just stupid. But I love what you are doing and can't wait to see Part 2 on this. I am expecting much improvement on the interior and hopefully a decent paint job on the body. Thanks for the content!!!!!!

    True story, I bought a 1997 Honda Civic coupe, swapped the single cam 1.5L (D15B) for a dual cam 1.8L (B18B1) from a junkyard, put an eBay turbo kit on it with supporting mods (bigger injectors, fuel pump, ARP head studs, Cometic MLS head gasket), got it street tuned using Crome the cheapest way possible, and it ran a 14.7 @ 100 MPH on 8 lbs of boost spinning all the way through 2nd on very hard 205/40/17 cheap tires...and I missed the 2-3 shift. I paid $1000 for the car, the engine was $250, the GSR transmission was $250, the turbo kit was $450, the supporting mods were probably $500 all-in, and the tune was $100. So for around $2100 I had a car that looked good and was really fun to drive. I'm sure there are plenty of y'all who can beat that story, so let me hear them! This was just one of mine.

      In 2003 I purchased a 1992 Corolla from a college student who forgot that engines require oil. I gave the kid $100 for the car. Being a Toyota mechanic I put a crank kit in it, dingle balled the cylinders and put new rings in it and lapped the valves and put new valve stem seals in it . Timing belt and associated parts and it was running like new. The car put two of my children through college and then I use it to “kick around “ in because gas prices went up. Other than tires, belts, and regular maintenance it’s not needed any unscheduled repairs. The a/c is still ice cold and never had a drop of freon added to the system. It’s old and ugly so I have something in common with it. I told my son that if it ever lays down on me because of the engine or transmission I’m going to mount the valve cover on my shop wall and I’ll make an end table out of the block. The rest of her will be recycled and likely shipped to China where it will be used to make some crappy products that will help put an American company out of business. I guess in our day that’s the Circle of Life.

There are some bars you can buy called No Hops or Anti Hops that will compensate for the lifted rear some but they're still less than ideal. Love your enthusiasm for this one.

    What a fun video, I can absolute dig the slamming gears and opening up the 400! I know you're a Pontiac guy so I will share a short story that I have from 15 years ago. My son and I went downstate Michigan to buy a bunch of second hand Cragar SS wheels from this place that happened to look like an old garage/ small junk yard. Inside the old hanger building that looked abandoned there was tons of GTO parts brand new from GM. Engines, body parts, interior parts and I even realized on the wall was a whole car sitting there. The guy there with me said his Dad worked for Pontiac during the 50's -80's and was able to get all kinds of stuff back then maybe for free? The car was very rare he said it was a July 1963 build Tempest convertible 389 4v 4 speed car with a rearend instead of the transaxle. From what he said it was one of the last 63 Tempest built before the changeover for the 64 models. Any how loved the video and can't wait to see more of the Lemans and of course the Buick builds (I am a Buick guy)!
