GARAGE FIND 1984 Camaro PARKED 27 YEARS! Will it RUN AND DRIVE 800 Miles?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- After flying from Minnesota to Pennsylvania to revival a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle (Episode 82), I ended up in Kentucky. I scratched my easy flight back home and took on this 3rd gen 1984 Chevrolet Camaro that had been previously parked for 27 years. Sitting was pretty hard on it, the entire front end was seized and took a lot of work to get it into the garage to start tearing it down. Think I'll make it 800 miles home? Watch and find out! Derek, I don't have a sense of humor. Not one drop, ask my wife. I subscribed to your channel and watch every video multiple times simply because watching you gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. You are a decent, ethical guy. That carries a lot of weight with me. It's rare to find a "feller" like you in this day and age. So, may I just say THANK YOU... You sir have my utmost respect. I am 74 years old and retired. You make me glad I have lived this long. I also like the way you and your wife are raising your son. You have a fine boy and he has a great start on life. I wish all three of you the VERYBEST life has to offer. John
John you are a man who took the words rite out of my mouth. I'm just a "spring chicken "at the tender age of 51 but i couldn't agree more. It is indeed refreshing to see someone so (for want of better words) real.
@@nickacelvn My thoughts exactly. He's a man after my own heart.
@@paulkirkland1535 I gotta say I agree whole heartedly .Derek has put a whole new spin on life. I subscribed to his channel a few vids ago and I tell ya I have a whole new perspective on life...thanks so much Derek!..cheers bud!
Swamp cooler running in the garage can alleviate the heat while you are working in the shop of almost any size.
A feller and a couple ol' timers gives this gal ideas about what to do next in life. At 50, I've got to start planning on that.
“I just felt my mullet grow” That line should be on a T-shirt!
I'm bald, but I'm stealing that line

Speaking as a middle aged guy from the UK who drives a Focus, this is definitely the best channel on You tube. It is bliss.
Yep, I live in the south west of the UK and I agree with you too. This guy is amazing! I'm hooked.
Also from UK

depression has been apart of me for a while and its been really difficult finding things that i am truly interested in and your videos of fixing up cars and driving them home really hit the spot for me. thank you

One of the things that I love about the channel. I actually just bought a 77 C10 from a family and got the whole story from 1977 to 2020. Makes me appreciate it that much more. I can't wait to get it all put back together and running!
A great GREAT videos. Much respect sir. Outstanding.
Thank you all!
@@ViceGripGarage I really just love the fact how much respect you gave this family. Been with you for a long time. This video made me make my first comment to you. Keep the great revivals going on the card and trucks please? A V8 Swap like a old school 400 small block Chevy from 1970 or 71 would be Awesome! Tons o torque and Horsepower done up right! Do a four bolt main conversion to it if it's a two bolt and you have a screamer! But I'm sure you know that! Love this channel and you have a great wife too! God bless, Steve

Derek, among all the obvious things about you; your sense of humor, your use of the English language, your never-give-up outlook towards any problem, the number one thing I like about you is this: You could be broke down, for the eleventeenth time, on the side of the highway, with 600 miles to go, and you still have a great attitude about the good things in life. Keep up the good work. (and I'm not talking about the work you do on cars)
Use of the English language? I don't understand your meaning 🤔
I was a millwright for 20 years, packed many a bearing. Best way is what your doing, cup your hand and pack 'em. TIPS: start with clean hands and a clean surface. Don't over-pack, bearings need a bit of room. Make sure the race and housing is clean also. You are doing great. Old ways are the best ways. Our grandpas didnt get grey and grumpy by taking candy-as5 shortcuts.
I didn't know they could be over packed

My Dad taught me to pack them that way, so that’s how I’ll be doing them always!
My method is putting the bearing in a ziplock baggie with the lube and smushing it in there that way….

Broken cat substrate is plugging the exhaust intermittently. There's your shutdown and also why the O2 sensor blew out. I think my mullet is growing as well watching you drive that.
Exactly
That's about right. Should've just cut it out right away and either left it till he got home or pulled the old broom handle trick and welded it back on...
@@kender1412 Agreed, all the signs were / are there.
I know I'm a little late but that sounds about right. When I got my 1991 Camaro with the 3.1 v6 it was sounding and acting the same way. Turned out the cat would have been clogged solid if the stuff inside didn't break apart just enough to allow some exhaust to slip through the cracks intermittently. Before I fixed it, that thing would get really hot (enough to make a cold gallon of milk on the passenger side floor get warm and spoil on a short grocery trip). Sometimes if it stalled and didn't want to fire back up, getting underneath and gently persuading the cat with a 2 pound sledge would get it flowing enough to run again. The 700R4 in it acts just like that one in the video did. ...Actually this video brought back memories of dealing with almost all those same problems. The difference was, due to it being fuel injected, I also had to replace the in-tank fuel pump (either drop the rear axle to get at the tank or cut a hole in the floor. No easy way), filter and injectors (yes, I was wishing it had the simplicity of the carb). The good part is I took a couple months working on it and didn't have to do it in only a few days then drive 800 miles. It's still a work in progress and haven't decided exactly which direction to go with it either. Right now it's just an extra car to drive.
@@shawnbrown7057 -- the easy way to fix this is to cut out the cat, ram a broom handle through it a few times until all the garbage falls out (the cat is now non-functional), and then weld or clamp it back in. Tune your to pass emissions and once you have your sticker, run it how you want...not that I'm advocating bypassing Federal emissions standards, but...

Ugliest steering wheel
"Had Quite a few Firsts in There" refers to the time the: 1 muffler fell off on a washboard road, 2 alternator quit producen electric trocity, 3 tierod broke and tires did the splits 4 flicked cigarette out the window and the cherry came back in caught back seat on fire or went between your legs, 5 built an awkward subwoofer box for the trunk a week before manufacturers started selling bitchin boxes built for it 6 fogged up the enormous rear window with heavy breathing and had an officer shine his maglight on your girlfriend's Fun Stuff! 7 played poker on the dash because what other car has a kitchen table for a dashboard 8 fixed up your basic Camaro to look like an RS or your RS to look like a Z28 9 lost every race to them Gull Dern new 5.0 Mustangs!!! Every ChevyMan was pissed including me!!!
I bought this exact car when I was 15. From years of cutting grass. Lots of first for sure. My dad grew up in the era of the Chevelle and Nova. He knew I would regret getting rid of it later in life. He bought it off me when I started a family and kept it for me. He passed away in 2016. It had sat for a while and needed some attention. The summer of 2017 I got her in the barn and started working on her. It took me a year, multiple watches for parts, one surgery ( cut my thumb tendon and had to repair it), and lots of tears. We had always talked about working on her together but cancer took him from me. Now any time I work on her, he’s there with me and I’ll talk to him. Still love my car. Still miss my dad. Its white btw.

Restore this one to all original 👍 I think it deserves it. Love the Channel.
I’m watching this 3 yrs after but have a fun story. I bought my wife a new one of these Camaro in 1984. Black, new radials, 2.8 V6 with TBI throttle body injection. It sure ran. So that Nov in 84 we drove from Jersey to her sisters in Columbus Ohio for Thxgvg. Weather was fine until after Pittsburgh. It started snowing on the Trnpk we were about 80 miles into Ohio doing about 25 mph. The road had become a sheet of ice with traffic miles behind me and miles in front of me. I’d like to say at that time I had driven in blizzards, and snow storms up and down from Jersey to Va never a problem. Suddenly out of no where the wind hit us and the car did a full 360 going at 25 mph. I literally watched our world spin in slowmo for the first time in my life. Fortunately there was no traffic anywhere but we were freaked out. Bottom line those Camaro had very light rear ends after that I put 80lb salt bags in the trunk space for ballast.
This is my absolute favorite thing to watch, every video that comes out I drop everything. Thanks for doing what you do!
My grandad taught to pack bearings by dropping the bearing right into the “jug” of grease he always had. Then work it in by hand like you (but while still in the “jug”. He was a true believer that if a little grease is good then A LOT was better.

You are a very interesting character! I really appreciate how you do videos that take us on your trips to rescue and repair cars. I especially appreciate how do you use your knowledge and experience to teach me the inner workings of cars and at the same time do it with humor and make it seem simple. That’s a rare gift!
I know how you feel about the digicals. They never inspire much confidence when they get old. It makes me wonder why people get so excited about cars that run completely on dancing pixies.
Excellent video! This Vice Grip Garage Guy, well, he just never disappoints! Keep up the good work. I've been telling everyone I know about this channel!
Thank you for sharing i appreciate it
Agreed
Subscribed for the northern humor/sarcasm/makeshift words. The best friends I ever had were from Wisconsin. I miss those guys. This video made me smile. Thank you.
I drove through Kentucky in 2015 (Washington to South Carolina) and it was astonishing how bad the roads were. You are easily in the top five best UA-cam creators, and top three in the automotive genre. I appreciate the comforts of my newer vehicle, but it makes a guy feel pretty nostalgic to see these older cars get another chance at life. The cassettes were worth the detour.
Now he has ME asking myself questions then answering myself with "I don't know."
That is actually a proven technique of both learning and solving problems. A bunch of pinheads spend their entire PhD life trying to explain why it works.
That's a phraze I've used all of my life, and don't know where I picked it up at, but it must work, 'cause I've used it for 79-years...lol!
I've been in a melancholy mood as of late, and though I've always enjoyed your various "will it run" style videos, I enjoyed this one in particular.
Maybe it was the story behind the car, maybe it was the music and scenery, either way, thank you for another great video.
“Kenny Loggins, he has more than one tape? I’ll be dipped.” 😂😂😂
😂😂😂
11:20 when he said ooh I got a message I laughed so much
Yep I'd LS swap it and rebuild the transmission just amazing for 27 years can't wait to see the next one keep up the hard work god bless to you and the family
What happened to the 290 horse 307 if you still have it there you go cheap straight pipe and a good buff out video 😎💪
I tried one of those cone bearing packer 9000 things, and it took half a tube just to get some grease going... Went to the old palm packer method and much better... Just like I had always done since the late 70's.... Well, don't read anything into that statement.... I am packing wheel bearings.... Not what you are probably thinking.... Ha, ha.... :)
we used a plastic jar thing with a stick in the middle and plastic cap, put the bearing on the stick and use the cap to shove'r down one or thrice and bam shes plum full.
Awesome! I think the dash noise might be the blower motor. Those 2.8 V6's are good engines.
Funny how a fellar in his old age starts liking the finer things in life, like having stopelators on a car.
I love the 1 hour road trip videos. I watch every second and still want some more.
You, Sir, are an inspiration! Every video I watch gets me a little closer to kickin' the mothballs off of my '63 Dart that has been sitting (indoors) for about 10 years. I can personally attest to that "It ran when parked" as the cliche goes. I subscribed about 2+ weeks ago. Been s-l-o-w-l-y crossing off parts for the "to-do" list every since. Your vids are a much need a fire to my backside. Please keep 'em comin'! I especially love sped up interstate footage(s). Stimulates a daydream on what it would be like to do a Power Tour-esque long haul with the thing. All original Slant Six...what could possibly go wrong??
She'll run, great engines. Get after it!
so cool ,so old school, Im 65 and remember nursing some old cars to get them home. I recall using a coat hanger to tie an outer tie rod to the ball joint, a bit shaky, but got her home. My mullet grew 2 inches that day.
