Jackson's songs are straight from the heart.Love this song. But it has even more meaning to me since I recently lost my husband who loved him.We would sit have a glass or two of wine,me usually talk and listen to his albums and have the multicolored candle burning in a wine bottle. Miss those days. But I can listen to his songs still and remember happy times.Thank you Jackson Browne 💗💗

This is such a classic. He has always been the truth in music. Clear, truthful, and caring to others. A long time fan, whom still is thankful of his music and clarity of life.....Kudos, brother🙏🍁☺️

Philosophical . Browne’s thoughtfulness , hope and reminding: that is not forever- see that it’s precious. Just much appreciation for his songs

I'm a fan of lyrics, the colors of sound, the sound of colors, all compete in a run for the bridge (or crescendo), lyrics are the brightest spots

According to “The Telegraph”, Jackson said the following: “I wrote this song for a friend of mine who died in a fire. He was in the sauna in a house that burned down, so he had no idea anything was going on. It was very sad. He was a really interesting guy. Besides being a great dancer, he was an ice skater -he had a job in the ice follies; and he was a great tailor -he would make his friends clothes. He was a Renaissance man. When I wrote him the song -it’s a song I’ve sung many times, other times when people have died - I was making a metaphor out of the dance. Just the idea that your life is a dance. And there’s a line in it ‘In the end, there is one dance you do alone.’ That’s one of the songs I’ve sung all through the years, and for me, it’s like going to that place, and dealing with the fact that life will end. It’s a sad song, but at the same time, it feels good to sort through that reality and touch base with it, and then go on.“
I do hope “The Telegraph” expressed Jackson’s thoughts with fidelity. I have recorded those words verbatim here in this comment.
This is a song that has always meant a lot to me. I feel this song captures the yearning of many earth wide who want to know what happens -what REALLY happens when you die. According to some polls that is one of the most commonly asked spiritual questions among people everywhere. (along with “what is the purpose of life?” And “why does God allow suffering?”) I really appreciate how Jackson reached deep inside of himself to string these lyrics together in a way that resonates so poignantly - without attempting to preach his own opinions on the matter. He simply explores the grieving process in a raw and honest way.
He was in his mid-20s when that song came out on his “Late for the Sky” album. He has consistently written lyrics that comfort the disturbed -while they simultaneously disturb the comfortable. GREAT SONG JACKSON.

The earth turns, the sun rises, the day begins with pushing, shoving and squabbling. The air is fresh, the breeze is free, the sky clear and the birds sing. To God's Glory I have removed my worries to observe these things.

Sorry I beg to differ with clinical depression you can't always make the choice to motivate yourself that's what depression does. I always thought this song was about suicide .love the song and Jackson.

No you don’t always have a choice. I suffer from severe depression and am all alone. I cannot just snap to it and be happy even when I know others are dealing with more than me. It is just not that way when your brain is wired badly.

@@debrapatterson998 i know the feeling its a horrible disease and we often blame ourselves a doctor once told me we wouldn't tell a cancer patient to just get over it and we shouldn't tell depressive people the same. Sending hugs and prayers 🤗

I believe Wayne was speaking to those who were healthy but chose to be the victim. Not those who had serious illness as you mention. I've read every single one of his books.
