  • Jackson Browne and Billy Strings play Browne's song "Running On Empty" live in concert before a sold-out crowd at the Camp Winnarainbow benefit concert at Herbst Theater in San Francisco, California on September 29, 2022. The song was the title track of Browne's fifth album, Running On Empty (1977). Joining them in this performance were husband and wife duo The Mastersons: Chris Masterson (guitar) and Eleanor Whitmore (fiddle).
    Browne and Strings performed as part of a songwriters' circle at Toward The Fun(ds): A Concert Benefitting Camp Winnarainbow. The camp, founded by Wavy Gravy, is a kids' summer camp focused on circus, juggling, acting, and clown performance. It provides scholarships to families in need to keep the camp open to all children. To donate in support of these efforts, please visit www.campwinnarainbow.org/donate/.

    Jackson Browne official bio:
    Jackson Browne has written and performed some of the most literate and moving songs in popular music and has defined a genre of songwriting charged with honesty, emotion and personal politics. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2007.
    Except for a brief period in NYC in the late 1960s, Jackson has always lived in Southern California. His debut album came out on David Geffen’s Asylum Records in 1972. Since then, he has released fourteen studio albums and four collections of live performances. Jackson is currently working on a new studio album, set for release in July 2021. On May 15, 2020, he released two new singles from the forthcoming record, “Downhill From Everywhere” and “A Little Soon To Say.”
    Browne is known for his advocacy on behalf of the environment, human rights, and arts education. He’s a co-founder of the groups Musicians United for Safe Energy and Nukefree.org and a member of the Ocean advocacy group, Ocean Elders. In 2002, he was the fourth recipient of the John Steinbeck Award, given to artists whose works exemplify the environmental and social values that were essential to the great California-born author.
    =======
    Billy Strings official bio:
    Michigan-born and now Nashville-based, Billy Strings is a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and musician, who arrived on the scene as “one of string music’s most dynamic young stars” (Rolling Stone). Strings is in the midst of a triumphant year after winning Best Bluegrass Album at the 63rd Grammy Awards for his critically acclaimed record, Home. Produced by Glenn Brown, the record also led Strings to top Billboard’s 2020 year-end charts in both Bluegrass categories-Top Bluegrass Artists and Top Bluegrass Albums-and continues to receive widespread critical acclaim. Of the release, The Associated Press proclaims, “it is his creative musical storytelling, paired with solid vocals on Home that should seal the deal, pleasing fans of the genre and creating some new ones…the perfect blend of pure talent and pluck,” while The Wall Street Journal declares, “Billy Strings has clearly emerged as a premier guitar flatpicker of this era.” Since his debut, Strings has been awarded Guitar Player of the Year and New Artist of the Year at the International Bluegrass Music Awards, selected as one of Rolling Stone’s “New Country Artists to Know” and performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and PBS’ “Bluegrass Underground.” Known for his electric live shows, Strings will continue his extensive headline tour throughout 2021 including upcoming shows in Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, Denver, Austin, Atlanta and Nashville among several others.

      I’m an old Guy but have loved JBs music since the early 70s…maybe 60s. Some of his songs like “Red Neck Friend” was an anthem for myself and Friends in our redneck hippy kind of era….

      I had the privilege of seeing Billy Stings live for the first time on Sept 30 , 2022 at Frost Amphitheater at Stanford. I was amazed. In addition to the stunningly clean and hot bluegrass playing there were times when I could close my eyes and swear that I was listening to Pink Floyd. That guy is immensely talented and whoever produces his touring show is world class. The sound and the special effects sounds were amazing, as well as the light show. I went to the show expecting to be impressed, but I was absolutely blown away and amazed by what I saw and heard.

    I'm 71 years old, and still perform out often. This song was such a powerful inspiration for me, and the lady who became my wife, and the mother of my family so many years ago. Having been a performer and writer (150 songs copyrighted) for my whole life, I have always noticed 'up and comings'. Billy Strings, being a major talent, I noticed him immediately, but just assumed he would be like so many others, relating only to the music of his peers, which I have to say are not that outstanding on average. But now, to my very pleasant surprise, he seems to be a spirit, like many of us, who know nothing of styles, eras, or trends, but has that amazing ability to tune in to soul, and what it is that has attracted us all to manifest here in this reality in the first place.. and that is to experience and love this world in its myriad of exciting adventures. God bless you all.

    My goodness, what an honor for Jackson and Billy. I have followed Jackson Browne since the early 70's and he is, by far, my favorite artist. That is a tall order given the talent running around in my 6 decades. But Jackson Browne, the man never stopped and the legacy he has built will endure into time well beyond us all. To me, at least, his song Barricades of Heaven set the tone for his entire career. The one thing I could NEVER figure out about him was how his lyrics were SO profound for being so young. Maybe that is normal and I'm the knothead, but either way, the man is a wordsmith and an amazing musician. Breaks my heart to see him struggle to sing, he gave his all and is still going. I could see the joy in his eyes seeing a youngun pick up the slack so he could keep on playing.
    Thank you Jackson Browne for getting me through life, you have NO idea how hard I leaned on you all these years. Still do and I love taking you on the road with me, we have covered some miles together.

    Jackson , this o;d hippie first saw you open for Joni in Boston march 1971. You are so gracious to this kid I do not know, but so happy he' knows your music. That was just so much fun. Watching you both watching each other. That child was so excited to play with you. Great moment. Thanks Tim Bracken!

    Jackson Brown is such a great songwriter! Fab collaboration here with Billy Strings, love how they both are just loving it, and how Billy steps in on those high notes adding his vibe but not taking away from the songs original take. Thanks for sharing!

    This says so much about Jackson Browne's commitment and respect for younger musicians. It's a tribute to Browne's humbleness. Truly a blessing. Also, Billy Strings is fabulously talented.

    Gave me chills to watch Billy pull this off with JB and do it with his style. He's hitched himself to pull the next generations of young musicians and fans forward in music performed by musicians, not machines. Remember it was Billy "off the cuff" sitting in that living room a few years ago with just his guitar and of course Mr Green Shirt that brought a lot of us to find out about him.

    That was great to watch. Thanks for posting it. It put a smile on my face and warmed my heart. Both these guys are not only great musicians, but great human beings. Don't miss a chance to see Billy play live. You won't regret it. Jackson Brown played at a cancer benefit to help raise donations for the event which my schoolmate was putting on as a three time cancer survivor. That's the kind of giving soul he is. Giving of his time and talents to help others. I also had the pleasure of performing a private laser show for Jackson in a small studio. He is so aware and thoughtful. Very down to earth. It was a great experience getting to spend some time with him. As he was leaving the studio, he stopped turned around and thanked me again by name for the show. I'll never forget the positive energy of being around that man.
