Packing Cubes VS Compression Cubes

- Welcome to It's the Kellys! In this video, Lauren will be discussing two popular packing accessories - packing cubes and compression cubes - and helping you decide which one is best for your travels.
Packing cubes have become a go-to item for travelers looking to stay organized while on the go. They are perfect for keeping clothes and accessories sorted, and can even help maximize luggage space. On the other hand, compression cubes take things to the next level by squeezing out excess air and creating even more space in your luggage.
In this video, we will compare packing cubes and compression cubes side by side, and explain the benefits and drawbacks of each. We will cover topics such as compression explained, how to pack with packing cubes, and even share some packing hacks that are perfect for larger families or extended trips.
We will also share our personal experiences and recommendations for the best packing cubes and compression cubes for travel. Whether you're packing for a short weekend getaway or a longer adventure, Lauren has you covered.

Your new website is impressive! I also signed up and got the packing checklist which are always helpful when one travels.
PS. even though I love your exuberance I think you need some tea with echinacea, lemon and honey. Take care of that voice.. You are our travel guru!
Please can u go with the plastic bags that u put like a vacuum cleaner or somthing similar to suck out all the air??? I want to try it, but Idk. And in "Temu" exist a backpack that had a plastic bag in their structure. Can you please check it out?
I find that many videos have affiliate companies they buy with but I haven't found a video on Merino wool company comparisons. Unbound, Merino, Ice breaker, smartwool, ExOfficio, which is the best. Especially with the price point of the clothing I don't want to buy them and not like it.
Finally someone using the packing cubes properly!!! Lots of youtubers say that packing cubes don’t work, but they pack so loosely that it’s obvious it’s not going to do anything saving space! The correct way is exactly like you do. Squish everything possible in the cube and zip it up!
😂😂 thank you! Other packing videos drive me crazy! Nobody uses them correctly!
Hi Lauren, the conclusion I drew from your video was that adding compression barely saved any space and kind of deformed the cube into a football. It also added an extra annoying step-it seemed like it took some time and effort to close the compression zipper. I like for my packing cubes to maintain a block shape with uniform height so that they fit together nicely in my carry-on. (For the record, I have an Away Bigger Carry On Flex with the Away packing cubes.)
I was surprised that you fit your entire wardrobe into one packing cube! I regularly use my entire set of four cubes when I go on longer trips.
Thanks for such an informative video!
Yes, I despise compression cubes for exactly that reason :)
I agree for all the same reasons, however I did get the monos compression cubes and I love them. I just don’t use the compression feature - then they stay nice and square. The monos cubes seem like the sturdiest cubes out of all of my cube collection and I’m glad I got them; plus they offered a few sizes/shapes that I didn’t already have. They also look great. To me it was worth the purchase for the monos cubes, but it will probably be my only compression cube set (and I won’t be using the compression).
I bought 2 sets of packing cubes because of your recommendations from a previous video you posted! and now I dont go anywhere without them. I actually one of of the cubes from the set to keep some spare clothes in my car for my toddler in case he decides to forget he's potty training lol
Yay! And that’s so smart!!! Hopefully you don’t have to bust into that cube very often 😂
I'm about to go to Italy for my wedding and I'm a crazy person who's traveling carry on only and I got my wedding dress to fit on one side of my Monos carry on. I was worried about how I would bring my regular clothes with only one side to work with -- I had a packing cube from IKEA, similar to the medium size ones that you have AND I FIT 8 PIECES (one of those being a thick chunky sweater) and I still have room to shop while I'm on my honeymoon. You just blew my mind!
my hero! I LOVE THIS. Congratulations!!!
@@ItsTheKellys thank you!!!
As a 29 year old who has only traveled domestically 2 times in my life (yes, I was a teenager), I will be a travel expert by the end of bingeing your videos all the way through. I plan on traveling a lot very soon. So I appreciate you and your content.Thank you, again!
I Will give you a medal when you’re done :)
Make sure you travel overseas…anywhere. It will give you a different perspective on the world.
I use both, regular cubes and compression in one suit case . They are the best thing someone came up with …
I have been using ebag packing cubes for probably over 20 years! I love my packing cubes!! I bought some compression cubes last year. They are okay but don’t hold as much as my ebags. Needless to say I went back to my ebags.
Same here!
ebags fan for 15 yrs. Our family's 1st packing cube set. We have tried 2 others and always pack with these. I give them as gifts.👑💄💋
Yet again, Lauren, you've gone the extra mile for us. It's one thing to show the cubes, but a whole other thing to show them packed and compressed AND how they fit in the suitcase. Comparing the clothing packed with no cubes vs inside cubes is the BEST evidence!! I've been using them for a few years and never EVER will I pack without them again. Some people will argue that it leaves some gaps here and there, but hey, I fill those in with small pouches I also can't travel without! :) I wish I could find palazzo pants like yours that fit me! Love those on you, and they seem to pack so well!
Thanks Susan! They are my favorite to travel in! Mine are super cheap, I’d love a nicer pair!
You just saved me a lot of money. THANK YOU!!!
Compression cubes don’t seem to save that much space.
I have the same ebags packing cubes as you and I LOVE them! I’m going to stick with those.
Glad you liked the video, and I agree the compression cubes weren’t as amazing as I had hoped!
Wow! That gonex compression rocked! I have used packing cubes for years and would not pack without them……I pack my regular cubes so tight that they automatically become compression cubes😂😂 love the unbiased comparison, thanks for the video ❤
😂😂 I do too on some trips!
Because I've always rolled my clothes and all of my traveling clothes are synthetic or Merino wool if you roll everything tight you don't need compression cubes!
I kinda of do the same thing. I mainly use cubes to keep things organized. So I will stuff my packing cube with a little extra clothing (not too much because I want to minimize wrinkles) so the packing cube will compress moderately. But my cubes do have the extra compression zipper that I usually don't use unless it's socks, underwear or leggings, things that I don't care if they get wrinkled.
Martha Stewart introduced me to packing cubes years ago. I have a mix from different manufacturers that I’ve collected and use. This video was a perfect demonstration of compression packing cubes. I was on the fence about using them, but you have convinced me to try them, so I ordered a set that will be here this weekend. Thank you for this video!
I’ve used ebags for the last 10 years. Love them.
This was BEYOND helpful. Thank you so much for this! Happy travels (and love the bangs).
The face shot through the mesh was hilarious. 😂 I have the gonex and travelon packing cubes. Plus I bring a wrinkle release spray and it helps.
😂😂 I love to entertain

🥰👍❤❤❤ I want to say a big "Thank You" for this video and to you Lauren, because I purchased the Shack Pack packing cube and it made my unpacking so much easier and accessible for my 3 day weekend trip to visit my sister in PA this weekend. Also, even though my clothes are a bit big I couldn't believe how much clothes I was able to pack and still had more room to pack my toiletry and bring few souvenirs. After trying the packing cubes in my opinion I will never go back to regular packing ever again.
I love to hear that!!! Thank you for sharing 💕
I love packing cubes and my first set was from ebags as well ! My recent purchase of packing cubes is from Briggs and Riley. They have a PVC bottom and are fantastic for both clothes and shoes but they do weigh more. I cannot imagine not traveling with packing cubes ever. It's a must have!
I bought my first set of packing cubes for an upcoming trip and realized when they arrived they weren't compression. So I ordered another compression set. I wish I'd seen this before and saved the money! Haha. Looks like Amazon might be getting a return.
I have the Monos compression cubes and the Monos carry on. I was a bit relieved to see you struggling with them. I was near tears the first time because it is just SO hard to zip that compression. Feels impossible! I kept thinking it can't possibly supposed to be this hard. That said, I did end up kneeling on mine and pulling with all my might and did in fact end up with them compressed and taking up much less space. I'm considering trying the Gonex or Peak.
To be honest, all of the compression cubes are the same. I don’t like any of them and completely prefer regular cubes
I love how hands on you are with your review. Whether taking it outdoors to scuff on cobblestones, test the wheels or pack. I feel like you give useful information and show us. I have compression bags. I use them uncompressed when I take a carry-on sized case and compressed when I take just a personal item and sometimes a carry-size, too depending how long of a trip. Best of both worlds. Please pack the take-off soon!!!
It will be out on Wednesday at 4pm EST Craig! Thanks so much for the compliment :)
I agree! I was just telling my mother-in-law how informative your videos are (like going to test all the luggage sizes). It's so helpful and does the research on products I can't see in person (especially when shipping to Canada is $)!
My mind is blown. I also had the dillema that my clothes would take up the entire half of my suitcase like that, I didn't know it could be different. Thank you for your honesty as well! I'll be buying the Monos carry on thanks to you and this reassures me that you were honest in your positive review there. Your carry on size test was also reassuring. You know exactly what we want to see, and even what we don't know we want to see 😂
I’m glad your mind is blown! 💕
I have been using eagle creek compression cubes for the last 4-5 years. I use them for shirts, thin chino pants, under clothing and socks. Things like jeans, sweats or hoodies. I just fold or roll and pack in the suitcase.
Thanks Lauren for doing this test ... I'm about to get a Quince luggage set by the way. You're the boss!
You’re welcome! I’m getting a new quince very soon myself!!
Well done! I appreciate you taking the time to do all these comparisons!
My pleasure!
We love e-bags and packing cubes❤❤❤ here to see the compression options🎉 your clothes are pretty compressed already.
I love any type of packing cube. Just got back from Punta Cana and my husband and I used them! Last summer I let my son borrow the cubes to go on to Arizona and he hadn’t used them. He was so amazed. He told his wife and now they want to borrow them for a summer cross country trip with his family. They were amazed about how much you can pack and that you can organize peoples belonging by the colors of the cubes if you have a bunch (each kid can be a different color). Lov you honest and genuine reviews!
You converted him! Sounds like he needs some for himself 😂
@@ItsTheKellys yup…time for me to buy some gifts! Lol
😂😂😂
Hi Lauren, thanks for the video. I used to travel with two backpacks (front and rear, classical backpacker) and never used packing cubes. But now that I want to go with one bag I've been giving cubes a serious thought. I was looking at compression cubes because I thought they were going to save more space than the regular ones, but your video shows that it's not always the case. I think I'll just go with a regular one and save some bucks, thanks!
The regular ones are always better!
Fun to watch. I use the green gonex packing cubes.
Twins!
I have the exact sets of ebags and shack cubes you have and have been using them for 10+ years. I do 18 day+ trips to Europe, changing hotels 3 times normally….and it’s so helpful to just be able to take the cubes out and lay them in drawers or on closet shelves. I did buy compression cubes from Tripped, but haven’t used them yet…. Mainly bc my stuff always fits just fine without compression if I fold/roll tightly, I am hesitant about wrinkles and the extra step I’d find annoying. I’m going to try using ONE on my next trip though to put in my raincoat, puffer vest and sweaters to see if it really saves space or not…. We’ll see. I am so set in my current approach.
In my opinion, sometimes it can all fit, but it compresses all of the air out and makes the cube as hard as a rock. I’d rather have that breathing room that we have in the regular cubes!
Have some Gonex mesh compression cubes in my Amazon cart and I'm glad I came across your video. I've never used cubes of any sort and just assumed compression would be better. Now I see that's not necessarily the case. Going to give these a whirl. Thanks for the great info.
You’re welcome! Keep me posted!
I have the gonex cubes and use them both ways, compression and juat like a regular packing cube. I like the compression for winter clothes/coats.
Great idea!
This was actually informative. You have sold me on getting packing cubes. I was debating on which kind to get.
I’m happy to hear that! 😍
Love your videos!! I’m a big convert of cubes thanks to your videos!!!
Great to hear! Thank you!
Hi Lauren! What a great video and real life comparison…rethinking the Monos cubes in my cart after seeing the compression fail. Your videos are extremely helpful for me as I build my travel packing collection…I’ll be ready for retirement next year! Thanks for answering my questions over on IG last week 😊
Thanks for the compliment and for watching, I appreciate your support! And you’re welcome! I’m always happy to help! 💜💜
Thank you for this! This video comparison was SO helpful, and I especially liked the overnight wrinkle test. My first Monos piece (carry-on in olive) just arrived a few days ago, so you showing the packing cubes inside yours couldn't have been more perfect timing.
My husband and I have several cheap (read: zipper broken after one use) packing cubes and one good quality small compressive one. We're deciding on which higher quality ones to get for a trip this year - now to decide!
Glad it was helpful! Keep me posted!! And cheers to olive green!
@@ItsTheKellys convinced my MIL to try to do carry on only for her trip in May (it's a big feat for birth of us) and sent her your videos. 🤞🏼🤞🏼
@@stefanisoliman yay! Thank you
Love packing cubes. I have a seat of medium Amazon brand and a slim set of Amazon brand. Been using for a few years. The slim fit right in between the handles of the suitcase so that unused space is used. Perfect for socks and undies.
Perfect! I love playing packing Tetris!
I always hated packing, but you changed my whole view about it!! SO excited to try!! Thank you for the video
Aw thank you so much! That means a lot to me! Keep me posted when you pack next!
Thanks so much, Lauren! This video blew my mind, and it'll definitely be useful for my upcoming trip!
Glad it was helpful! 💜
Great review! I purchased baggalini compression cubes and I like them. They are a bit bulkier but compress down very well and the zippers are very sturdy. With a little effort, everything compresses down wonderfully.
thats great top hear, thank you!
I'm getting used to using compression cubes and now I put the full compression cube on a chair, sit on it & zip the final zip 😅
Thanks Lauren this was helpful! I had the exact same issue compressing my Monos cubes. They feel nice and heavy duty/quality cubes. I like how they are sized to fit my Monos bag but now I don't feel alone on failing to compress them!
Yes I feel like they barely hold anything, although they are sturdy and gorgeous. They shall be good for my packing photoshoots 😂
I'm conflicted! I like that they have structure to stand up, so if you don't want to fully unpack, it's easy to see what you have packed and want to pull out. And if I overpack, I can use it as a regular cube. But then - is it worth paying the price for compression. Not sure! I also like the Monos opening vs the second compression one you showed (forgot the beans) where it doesn't open fully. My indecisive self will have to continue researching!
Thanks for always being so quick to respond! I love your content! And it’s super helpful! From one content creator to another! Thank you! ❤
You’re so sweet, thank you so much 😊🥰
I’ve literally tried so many packing cubes and come to the exact conclusion you did in this vid they’re great for cutting space and organizing but they’re all about the same the space you get from one is gonna be the same in pretty much the rest thanks for this vid cause I thought maybe I was doing something wrong I hate the compression cubes that don’t open all the way I feel like I don’t get much more room cause the compression is really from the top not compressing it width wise and they’re harder to pack and unpack in my opinion thanks again for another great vid❤
I love the cubes and you always show us how easy it can be to pack but l have a question not cube related (sorry)..
What are bangs? , l can see you have silky black hair but not sure what a bang is.
I’m Glad you asked 😂 You may call it fringe wherever you’re from
Omg, a busted can of biscuits! I love it! I'm stealing that lol 🤣
Great video, appreciate the honesty. I was looking at Compression Cubes and realized the "influencer" demonstration videos always only fill them about 2/3 full so that you can zip the compression zipper. And then when they "compress" it seems they only actually compress around the sides and the middle has a bulge that's the exact same height of an uncompressed cube. The Gonex seemd to take up just as much space in your suitcase as the Shacklepack. So I'm not sure why you'd spend the extra money when they don't actually seem to do anything and you probably can't pack them as full.
Yes, anytime I need to fill certain compression cubes, I can barely fit anything in it. For my own personal trips, it’s regular cubes all the way!
Had to subsribe to you channel! Great comparison Kelly. In fact probably the best on You Tube! thank you. I'm in the UK and need to travel to Spain on Easyjet with just a carry-on - so I think the regular bags will be fine for me. I don't like the bulkiness of the compression ones now I've seen your video.
Thank you! And I agree- no need for the compression!
Thank you for the effort you make❤😊
You’re welcome!
Compression cubes are my favorite!
Niceeeee!
I will be trying your tip to pack all my outfits in a medium packaging cube. I have a set of regular packaging cubes and a set of compression packing cubes. I like both. But I think the one medium packing cube and one small one will work better when packing a carry on. Especially for a longer trip.
Yes I always have the one medium regular and 1 small. It all depends on my clothing to be honest!
I just recently got the shacke pack from the previous video. I love ‘em
Awesome! I just let my son’s girlfriend borrow them for London and she did well! They are awesome aren’t they?
@@ItsTheKellys Yes I love ‘em
Thank you for all your wonderful videos!
You’re welcome, and thank YOU for watching :)
Thank you! I’ve been waiting for this video. I have the Gonex but may try the non compressible bags.
The Gonex can be great, but I definitely like the non compressible ones better :)
Thank you for all your great tips and reviews. I would like to know your opinion on vacuum bags(the ones you vacuum or pump the air out of). I never see people recommend them or talk about them anymore!
I absolutely despise them and think they are so annoying to pack and re-pack. BUT people have begged me enough to review them and try them for a video, and it will be coming out in June 😂
Have you ever tried using the compression packing cube with folding the clothes rather than rolling? Yesterday I was packing and rolled my clothes and tried to put them in the packing cube. It didn’t work and ended up looking like your first try in your video. So I then folded them instead, and got all of them in the compression cube and was able to compress it just fine and thus have a smaller cube.
I do a combination of both depending on the item. I fill the cube’s corners first, and then fill as needed. My pants or shorts are generally too big to be folded the normal way, and if I fold them one more time to fit, it’s the same size as being rolled. Believe me, I’ve been packing cubes of many types every month consistently for 8 years.
Now we're talking! I honestly can't remember the first time I use packing cubes in my travels. I believe it would have started with small stuff sacks which are still useful for certain things like undies, socks if you're going on a hiking expedition.
At this point I have three or four types of packing cubes and a few favorites..
I am frugal, the money saved on suitcases, backpacks, and even packing cubes is more money to spend on travel! So my basic, frugal cubes or non-compression and they are either Amazon Basics, or Globite, a company you can purchase through Amazon as they are an Australian brand. Globite is not as "cheap" but worth it's as they have the best customer service I've ever encountered in travel accessories. To be able to have a company ship a new item to you during your travels if something goes wrong is everything and I was once FedEx and item even though I was on the other side of the world!
Amazon Basics are also very good for the money. honestly, the only qualm I have is it both have the mesh netting near the corners or edges on many other styles and that is the first place that you might encounter a snag or rip. If shopping, I would keep an eye out for any brand that does not have netting on the edges, I choose REI in that case.
For compression cubes I spend a little bit more money. Eagle Creek is a good lightweight brand and less expensive than Thule. Thule is my favorite compression cube as the material and the zippers are so strong. I have a white set. wherein the cube zippers are white and the compression zipper is black. Saves a time packing a compression cube! that was the first thing I noticed about the Monos packing cube you have. It's sexy, like some of their sexy adverts, but sexy doesn't cut it when I travel. Black zippers on black cubes with black Interiors doesn't speed up my packing. Also sad to see the Monos didn't give as much and you could not fill the same amount as your Gonex favourite!
My third type of cube is not compression that made by Patagonia and it's splash resistant and very sturdy. it comes in three sizes and opens like a clamshell suitcase with netting compartments on both sides. I can fit a day or two in my largest but the reason I love it is it is basically the same "blackhole" fabric as Patagonia luggage. I use these for tossing in a change of clothes if I'm going out on the water as I can just throw the cube in an open tote bag or even my waterproof kayaking duffles.
So I'm obviously a packing cube fan! one thing I noticed you didn't mention Lauren is that if one is the type who prefers to unpack your luggage when you travel, I'm assuming cruises etc, it is very easy to simply put the cube in a open drawer just in case those are not wiped clean between guests and it keeps you organized!
I’ll have to check all of those out, and yes, that’s a great point about keeping your clothes in the cubes to stay clean!
I’m glad you’re on team packing cube 💜
Some good tips, thanks. Going on a cruise soon and putting the cubes right drawers is a great idea. Besides avoiding cooties, the drawers probably aren't that big.
It really is nice for organization! Especially when sharing such a small room with 2 people
Thanks so much! You have excellent videos!!!!! I've never used packing or compression cubes. I thought I would prefer the compression cubes, but I actually like the packing cubes! By the way, I usually travel with a 21" carry on, a Beis mini weekender AND a 28" checked bag for a 2 week vacation...I know what you are thinking :). I'm going to pack with your recommendations and I'll let you know how it goes.
The packing cubes help a lot, but won’t help you overcome all of that! But I’m glad you are working on it!! 🩷🩷🩷 let me know if I can help more!
Great video! I currently have the Gonex cubes but think I’ll purchase a set of packing cubes after watching this video.
I’ll be interested to hear what you think about the difference!
I just returned from a week long trip using a carry on only with packing cubes. I think I prefer packing cubes now. It was great not having to deal with a checked bag! Thanks for all the packing tips and helpful info on this channel. 😊
I’m receiving my Monos luggage and packing cubes today. My trip isn’t until May, and this will be my first attempt to travel with a carry-on and backpack only. I’ll let you know how it goes. I always travel with packing cubes. But this will be my first time with compression cubes. 🤞🏽 I’ll let you know if I was able to do so, or if I had to take a checked luggage. Love your videos, by the way. 🙌🏽🙌🏽❤️👊🏽
I LOVE packing cubes.I use Biaggi and they are great. A little pricey, but they are very good quality and they have quite a few sizes.
I haven’t tried them!
Im convinced on packing cubes and will use them for our next cruise. I didnt see much difference with the compression cubes. I would also love to know where you get your pants if you dont mind sharing. I loved the patterns. Great videoand always informative!
Yay! I can’t wait for your update post cruise! And my pattern pants are from SHEIN :)
@It's The Kellys Thank you so much!
Really helpful. I’m new subscriber. Leaving 4 Colombia 28 day trip in 24 hrs. I’m using some of your hacks & feel fine-Avianca is really tough on all bag restrictions 2024. I’m packing “personal item” w/snacks, some toiletries, make up, change of clothes for landing in tropical climate & the required passport, personal docs, cash. This bag will never leave my sight. I packed a teeny colorful grocery bag inside to cover darling backpack during flight, underneath seat. Avianca pre-flight offers carry-on bag @ $120 round trip, which I refused. I will pay pre-flight $110 rt checked bag fee. If I can’t fight Avianca, I’ll join them. Next trip: yes 2 only personal item & overhead bin carry-on. 😊
I flew them a few times in April and they weren’t strict at all! :)
Thanks Lauren! Fantastic…I also use the bag medium, and have just bought the Sea to summit medium p.cube for my next trip to Sri Lanka …I personally don’t feel I need a compression cube ….
Ooh Sri Lanka 😍😍 and yes, I agree! Compression cubes aren’t always necessary :)
I am an eBags loyalist when it comes to packing cubes. Thanks for checking out the Monos for me. I'm glad to confirm my suspicion that they really are not all they are cracked up to be in the end.
EBags are the best for sure!
Wondering if you prefer using your Monos carry on suitcase over the Weekender or Duffel? Would you use packing cubes in these as well?
I would use packing cubes for every type of bag. I do prefer hard suitcases over weekenders or duffels when I fly. If I’m driving, a duffel/weekender is ideal, mainly because of the weight and long walking times in airports.
I love packing cubes. I just bought my first set of compression cubes and used them on one trip so far. I'm not sure that I love them. I'm goiing to try them again, but I don't know that they were worth the effort to compress them.
Yes, it doesn’t seem to give much more space!
I tried compression cubes but found that the amount of weight added made my bag a bit cumbersome (oh I can add a bunch more crap to my bag?? Turns out not a great idea for me). LOVE the ebags cubes, those are my go-to also. Simple but easy to use.
I have the monos and agree…they don’t work with compression unless you leave a ton of space. I just use them like a regular packing cube. I like them but wouldn’t recommend because of the price.
Agreed 💜
If you need to leave space in the cube to compress it, what’s the point? Better to fill it completely and not compress.
@@danieloneil1101 pretty much! I just fill them up and use the other compression features built into the luggage!
I had the same problem with the compression bags
Define your plus.. I am a size 24 and I struggle to get 3 pants, 3 shirts in a medium packing cube.
I’m a size 20, or a 2x. I have a ton of packing videos on here :)
I was shocked that the Gonex compression cube was able to hold everything and compress! Fun video, Lauren. Have you ever tried compression sacks? They are very different from compression cubes. I'm thinking about buying a small or medium sized compression sack to pack squishable items (down jacket, fleece infinity scarf and small travel blanket that I use at hotels) that I want to take on a cruise to Norway in the summer.
I havent! I’ll have to check them out!
Because I not only travel but hike/expedition travel I've used compression sacks. My only qualm is a compression sacks are sometimes harder to compress.
The type I have have four straps over the cylinder and you have to go around and tighten each a little at a time. Compression cubes are so much easier as you can press down with one hand and zip around the corners with the other. I hope you enjoy your trip!
@@IntriguedLioness Thanks so much!
Thanks for the video, loving your content. I'm deciding between normal and compression packing cubes. I prefer to place the clothes flat inside and not roll them up, are normal cubes better for only rolling up or does laying clothes flat inside also save space?. Saving space is important for me but ease of use is another biggie, so the normal cubes seem more practical.
Since not all clothes are the same size when folded, I love a normal cube still for that. I just find the compression cubes to get more solid and create a weird shape, which is harder to play packing Tetris with :)
@ great thanks. So you’d say for someone who just lays/folds (and doesn’t roll), the non-compression are still good?
Yes, for any technique, I believe they are better
@@ItsTheKellys great thank you so much! btw have you tried the Carl Friedrik cubes? I’m getting a carry on and check in from them so thinking of getting their cubes too
Yes I love them. I believe I used them in my 2 reviews. And I just used the hybrid on my trip and it was great.
Can you get more clothes inside the cube by rolling them instead of folding them? I’ve never traveled using only a carry-on but I’ve decided it’s the best thing to do. I know an extended family of 14 who are currently in Europe. Their first flight was delayed and they missed their connecting flight by two minutes. They were finally able to get rebooked the next day on a total of three different flights to reach their destination. I know they’re thankful they only used carry-ons. Had they checked their bags, there’s no telling where the bags would have ended up!
That is the number one reason why I only do a carry-on! I have heard of way too many people that have lost their luggage and have had absolutely nothing for their entire trip. Let alone the fact that I am plus size and Europe doesn’t really make clothing in my size that is easy to find. Anyway, when it comes to rolling versus folding, it really depends on the item. I am a big fan of rolling the bottoms (skirts, shorts, pants) because that is typically how they will fit perfectly in the packing cube, and then I will carefully fold most of my tops really tiny on top of the bottoms.
I do plan on doing a video about this really soon because every time I do a packing cube video, it’s really hard to show how I actually put them in the cubes without making the video extremely long ❤️
I learned that lesson the hard way on a business trip to Malaysia. My luggage was delayed and I spent the entire night until the shops closed, trying to find a plus size jacket. I found one, but the sleeves were super short so I had to roll them up. I gave up trying to find dress shoes. Luckily, I had worn black tennis shoes that weren’t too noticeable.
Thanks for this video! Which do you prefer typically, compression or cube? I haven’t tried packing cubes yet, just compression and they seem to make a bulky in the middle rectangle. Looked like your cubes are more flat but wider. 🌸
Cubes 100%
Thank you so much for these comparisons, Lauren! I love my ebags packing cubes and tried the compression packing cubes from Beis, but wasn't able to zip them all the way. I did fill them with sweatshirts and things that wouldn't have fit in the ebags cubes, so maybe I'll give Beis another chance.
Let me know how they work if you try again :)
You’re great thanks a lot
You're great too! Thanks for watching!
The compression cubes work fine for me: I just sit down on the cube which compresses it plenty while doing the extra zipper... but either way, cubes rock.
I really appreciate your tips, we are going on our first cruise (it is a 7 day cruise ) and are planning carry-on only, so there's no risk of losing our luggage. Do you have any videos or tips on packing for men? It's his dress shirts and pants that I think will make things tricky.
Have so much fun! I haven’t really made a packing tips for men video. I should 🙈
Will he be bringing suit jackets? Or just dress shirts? I can make a video to help! Let me know what he wants to pack
@It's The Kellys Thank you, we are excited. We are thinking just a couple of dress shirts and pants, I don't think a jacket would be possible.
You can definitely do a jacket, it just has to be folded inside out and laid on top.
And I put the video on my list! I’m traveling next week but I’ll do it soon :)
@It's The Kellys Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. It would be awesome if we could bring a suit jacket.
Would it make a difference if the clothes were folded instead of rolled?
Not really. I do a mixture of both, it’s all about filling up the cube evenly
#Team Rolled here😊
Love your videos!!
Thank you!
Ebags are priced well when on sale. They also have compressed cubes. Love my ebags.
Me too!
I have regular packing cubes and compression like the Gonex. I MAINLY use my compression cubes when I am traveling with a backpack. That little bit extra compression helps with squeezing into some sizers, cheaper airlines 😊
For sure!! I love the smallest gonex for undergarments and swimwear, and the eBags for my clothing :)
I just purchased the Away Bigger Carry-on. Have you every used their packing cubes? Thanks, Tobin
I havent! Away hasn’t responded when asking to review their items 😭
I normally use the vacumn bags for final destination and you can roll up and leave jammies, undies, socks in a cube for easy access.
I cant use them because I usually have several final destinations :-/
Hi lovely lady . I love compression bags they don't take much room in the suitcase
Do you mean the ones I showed or the plastic ones? :)
@@ItsTheKellys the green ones that compression I got them In pink got a large coming this week .
Hi Lauren. I use packing cubes all the time. I have a question though. Compression cubes don’t seem any different. As a matter of fact, it looked like it was higher than the regular ones? Am I wrong? Btw, love your videos!
Yes, to me, the compression cubes don’t seem any different size wise, and sometimes do seem higher. I do prefer the normal cubes to allow the clothes to breathe better and therefore the cube isn’t hard and wonky in shape! 💜
Haven’t tried compression cubes cause I think they’d add extra weight but I do love my normal packing cubes by Globite. 🇦🇺
Glad to hear it!
Wow !! No wrinkles !!👍👍
I've been using packing cubes for a number of years, though I've never packed so much in them. On my next trip I'll try rolling my items. My one problem is that I wear cotton skirts and dresses. What do you suggest for packing these items?
I have a lot of cotton too. Either roll or fold, however it fits in best. And then maybe unpack when you arrive if you’re worried about wrinkles. I’ve never had a wrinkle problem on all of my travels!
@@ItsTheKellys I cringed when I saw the denim jeans in your demo but you do you and I will do me!
All of my travel clothes are either synthetic or merino wool which are lighter, easier to wash as you travel, and also resist wrinkles. No "cotton crinkles"!!
When I would travel for busine😮ss I would always do a "hack" that I watched my grandmother do, sheets of thin packing paper in rolled up skirts. Would never ever get wrinkles when I would do that. It was really good with merino sweaters. I would just pick up a few extra sheets when I would purchase clothes!
When traveling to a warm destination you might be able to avoid the "cotton crinkles" by rolling but you might want to look into synthetic or merino wool for future travels.
@@IntriguedLionessis thin packing paper the same as tissue paper?
have you tried Vacuum travel bags?
I don’t like vacuum seal bags because of wrinkling and they break easily.
Can you do videos on travel tips and hacks for flights and hotels for both US and international travel in other continents you have visited?
Hi, like booking hacks? Most of my “trip planning” videos don’t get many views but I put out a lot of stuff like that on Instagram!
For hotels, US and international, I book with Expedia and have exclusively for 8 years. Not only do I get points and therefore status for every booking (yay upgrades!) but I also use Rakuten and get cash back on my booking, too. I’ll link a video where I talk about it :) it’s an old video but still relevant

Hi Lauren - your videos are amazing.
First off...it frustrates me that July does not ship to Canada, so I'm looking to go with Monos.
Hoping for your insights
I bought the Monos Carry On Plus but I am anxious about being forced to check it in because I fly on Canadian carriers - starting with a 1-week getaway from Toronto to Cancun in a few weeks.
My mother has offered to buy it from me, which would suit her journeys by train.
I now have the option of purchasing the smaller Monos Carry On.
Based on your experience, would the 7-days of items I planned to pack in the Carry-On Plus fit in the smaller Monos Carry-On if I used their compression cubes?
Trying to see if this will work, or if I should just take a chance with the Carry On Plus.....but I would really rather not to have to check in....which is a Catch-22 because I want to bring 7-days worth of clothes.
To help provide context....here is what I would be packing in addition to what i would be wearing when I travel....
3 pairs of shorts
3 swim trunks
7 t-shirts
3 swim shirts
1 pair of pajamas
3 golf and/or casual shirts
7 boxer briefs
7 socks
1 pair of pants
1 belt
1 bag of Toiletries
1 pair of sandals
Thanks for any advice you can provide!
Which airline are you flying? Let’s start with that! I took all of my Monos bags to the airport today to test them in the sizers! Your plus might fit, depending on the airline!
@@ItsTheKellys I'm flying Air Transat from Toronto to Cancun
I fly 90% of the time to the US on Air Canada; however, since we would be inaugurating the luggage on an Air Transat flight to Cancun, I can't afford to leave a bad taste in my wife's mouth if we spend all this money on carry-ons and are forced to check them in (defeating their intended purpose). I will be in the dog house if this happens! We also purchased one Level 8 Textured ans 1 Level 8 Voyageur for our kids. Hope this helps!
Their allowances are 9 in x 16 in x 20 in (23 cm x 40 cm x 51 cm) and 10 kg (22 lb) in Economy Class and 15 kg (33 lb) in Club Class. Technically 20” is very short and there is no Monos bag within that height, but the 16” width is very wide.
Sometimes airlines look at total measurement of linear inches, and in that case, the small Monos would be fine. I wouldn’t risk it with the plus. It’s too big for air Canada (I just barely fit it in the bin today!)
As for what you’re packing, that’s totally fine. The Monos packing cubes are not my favorite. They don’t really condense help, they are more for organization. The ones from tripped travel gear are better, or eBags!
@@samysalib1790 air transat doesn’t fly out of DTW, but I do believe the Monos regular size will be fine. The plus- probably not. And I know it doesn’t freaky fit on air Canada either. Air transat is 9x16x20 and if they go by linear inches, we’re fine. There isn’t a piece of luggage out there under 20” so it has to be ok!
@@ItsTheKellys perfect This helps! I'll go with the smaller sized Carry On and look at those alternate brands of compression cubes you're suggesting. Thank you so much! Just hoping I won't have any issues with the Level 8 Textured and Voaygeor Carry-Ons.l that I got for the kids. Too much hassle to return them since I had to pay shipping and duty fees. Thanks again for all of your help Lauren!
I take my pillow when I travel- I know- crazy but can’t sleep without it. I’m looking for a compression cube that is large enough for pillow. Any ideas? Thank
There’s a lot of packs that come with some that are the size of a carry on, so probably 20 x 14. Maybe it can squish in there. My friend just carries hers on the plane
I find anything compresses if you sit on it while you zip it ((:
😂😂 I just don’t like how it changes the shape and becomes like football shaped when compressed!
I have the Ebags packing cubes that you used n your video
Some of my faves!
Busted can of biscuits! 😂
😂😂😂
What do you think about the plastic bags
Which plastic bags?
regular packing cubes seems to be the way to go. the compression ones are a good idea but not so much in practice. it's only "compressing" the sides and you get bulging in the center.
I 100% agree!
So good !! 👍 👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶✈️💞
I use my compression cube for my cables etc. Compression doesn’t work for me. I love packing cubes.
What a great demonstration. Naw. Not interested in super squeezing in my clothes. The regular cubes look great. You also have to consider that squeezing in more stuff is going to make your bag too heavy for airline requirements.
I’ve only had my carry on weighed about 3 times in my travels so far :)
