Compression Packing Cubes Review

  • Today I am reviewing compression packing cubes. This is another organized way to package your clothes for an upcoming trip that will save space. The features are similar to regular cubes, but compression packing cubes have some advantages and disadvantages to them.
I have traveled with regular packing cubes for years as a pilot wife. Many of you have told me to try compression cubes, and I finally did it! They were a game changer for packing, but there are some things I do not like that I will touch on at the end. The number 1 advantage of compression packing cubes is they are a compact size after you have used the compression zipper. Compression packing cubes compress the air out of your cubes and the air from in-between your clothes. #travel #packingcubes #traveltips #compressionpackingcubes

One thought: Using compression cubes in carry-on luggage is a great way to pack more items. However, if you are checking your luggage, compressing items does not reduce weight. You may be inclined to bring more items because you have the space. Be sure to weigh your suitcase after you are finished packing! **Love them for drive-to-port cruising!

@@TravelTipsbyLaurie I have to ask, how many compression bags do you have? I have ended up with 2 sets suited nomad, and a set of the national parks tripped brand. I use the gone large set I got originally for organizing my dresser.

It really depends on what season and length of the trip that I’m packing for. Fall and winter I use compression cubes. Spring and summer regular packing cubes. Downy has a travel size of wrinkle release that I really like. When I get to my hotel I hang my shirts up and spray them. I use the skinny oblong cubes for bras, underwear and my pajamas.

I live in Alaska and travel mostly during the winter. Compression packing cubes are a blessing with bulky items. I almost always check a Travel Pro 22 inch Sky Pro suitcase even though the bag size is compliant with carry on restrictions. My carry on, under the seat bag is a nylon Baggalini tote that is a crossbody that has a sleeve that slides over the roller bag if I want to be hands free. I no longer use larger suitcases since they are two heavy and awkward to handle. I enjoy your educational travel tips. Keep them coming.

Hello! I purchased the Gonex compression cubes. I am rolling my tops and bottoms (tee shirts and leggings) together and putting them in the cubes. One thought I had, as we do not travel often, is to keep my cubes, TSA bag, pouches, and other travel items in my suitcase. Also, I will put a dryer sheet or scented pouch in my suitcase while it is stored to keep the luggage smelling fresh. I am very thankful for your tips and the information you share with us. You have eased my mind about our upcoming vacation. We have not flown in 28 years, so these videos help us so much. Also, thank you so much for always responding quickly when I comment with questions. I truly appreciate you!

I learn so much from your videos, Laurie, and find them really enjoyable, even though I do not fly often these days. I got the national parks set on your advice. I do suggest that people be very careful about which set they order. I followed your link, and ended up with the set made for checked luggage instead of the set made for a carry on suitcase. Since I only travel with carry on luggage, the two biggest won't be of much help for travel. I'll have to use them for storing off-season clothes in my home instead. (Since I don't live in the USA, I have to make a special trip to the US to pick up orders from Amazon and other countries, so it isn't possible to return them.)

I really appreciate your practical and informative (from experience) videos. One pro for compression cubes I’ve seen listed while comparison shopping is that the material is supposed to be somewhat waterproof. On a recent trip it started pouring rain, and with no where to go for cover my husband’s luggage wasn’t waterproof and his clothes were soaked. So, another reason I’m looking at compression packing cubes.

I have 12 shirts, 2 cardigans(went in medium bag) Teva sandals and New Balance soft sneakers stuffed with socks. Under the bags I rolled my 3 pairs of jeans and one bermuda short and put in the "trenches". Bags on top and still loads of room in that bag! Thanks for all your tips! 10 day trip....even room for the liquid bag if I choose to put it in! Also carrying a Baggalini crossbody purse that can hold alot..

I am currently on an overseas Caribbean trip. I also love compression cubes but you have to be careful because when you compressed your clothes and get more in your suitcase it is heavier and harded put up in the overhead compartment. I recently got a set of compression packing cubes by Lermende and they have a partial mesh window, zip all around and are the fabric you mentioned. Hello Laurie I have used Eagle Creek for years. I bought the white strobe compression packs as I can see what's in the compression bag. I take a clean dirty bag in blue and a green regular eagle creek bag for my clothes line, Scrubba and microfibre towel to do my washing. . I also use a small eagle creek envelope for trousers . I also use the small go tubes by human gear . I have a qantas travel bag like your black one that weighs 3.2kgs and I only have 7kgs for carryon. I also have my hand luggage bag like your black and white striped one.. I invested 8 years ago in extra light Kathmandu shirts and trousers both in long and short tops, nylon pants in black and brown. that don't need ironing. I take two light but very warm merino tights and top on the plane and for layering plus a big but warm and light down coat. I take the same clothes for every holiday. I also have the weight written on the tags of my clothes that helps me keeps my luggage from not going over. Lastly missing travelling but watching these videos and preparing itineraries helps so much. I am from Sydney Australia.

Our car rental just won’t allow more- I was looking at Peak Design or Eagle Creek. Our trip has 7 different lodging stays- I was hoping since they have handles- they could just pull out the bag with the first 3 days clothes without having to repack everything. I’ll let you know how it goes! Also- who cuts your hair? I have honestly cut my own hair this past year bc my stylist quit to have her precious baby- I would love your recommendation! Hi Laurie. Thanks for the video. I use packing cube a lot to travel and yes, it helps me also when digging into my luggage for things in my suitcase during my trip. I usually leave everything inside my luggages for exemple if we stay at a place for just 2-3 days and than I know if I need 1 shirt especially, I di not have to dig and trow out everything outside, I just pick the cube I used for shirts. I would like to know if you use the luggage spandex protection or the luggage wrapping that they sometimes offer at the airport. My big concern with luggages is that the zip brake and suitcase open during the transit. ANyway thanks again.

I love my compression cubes. Another benefit is that once I reached my destination, I didn’t unpack the cubes, I only released the compression zipper and put the whole bag into a drawer. My compression cubes have a zipper that allows the whole top to open up. Not only did it make it easy to find my clothes and stay organized during my trip but when the time came to repack, that was so easy too. If you do use a compression cubes and you find it hard to zip up, you are putting too many things into it. It has helped me be more efficient in what I take on a trip but still allowed me to have enough choices. I wouldn’t travel without them.

I can get 2 pairs of leggings, and 2 rolled up swing dresses in one large one. In the other large one, I can get a week’s worth of tops in the other one. I use the long skinny bag for a pair of flip flops, but I could probably get another pair of shoes or sandals in there.

In my case the compression cubes didn't result in an increase in weight. They simply allowed me to take a smaller (and lighter) suitcase!
I find the colours very useful, as it allows me to find things quickly (particularly in carry-on luggage) I also reserve a contrasting bright or light colour to keep items which must be removed and passed through the x-ray machines separately. Not only does this save a little time, but more importantly, I don't accidentally leave those items in my bag!

Lewis and Clark makes great compression packing cubes. They actually address several of the negatives you mention: they are see-through, the zippers open all the way, and there are many styles/sizes. I've been using mine for several years now and they really hold up well. I haven't washed mine as often as I should, but they're machine-washable, too I bought mine when the local Boston Store was going out of business, but even on Amazon, they're not that expensive. I even got away with it for our 10 day land/sea Hawaii trip. I used somewhat of a vacation capsule wardrobe for us and it worked out great. I would suggest using a travel size garment steamer if allowed in a carry on. Some hotels also have irons. You can always ask at front desk if its not provided in your room.
