Wow am so glad I saw your video, I myself teach kids sewing now over 5years , I love it so much and it is so amazing to see those kids growing and they are amazing and I believe anyone can see . Thanks By listening to you it’s like I am
Listen to my 😊. To me it’s is important for kids to sew is first to learn a skill for life and to slow down fast fashion and nothing is more satisfying when you make something and as you said putting all the effort into it they will respect more their clothes and anything else. Looking forward for more content xx

Thanks for your video. I just shared it with one of my friends whose little one has an interest in sewing. Your content seems like a great place to start. God Bless.

I am starting off teaching some home schooled 8-12 year olds, where should I start?

I like to start simple worth a wallet, pillow, and tool roll up. Repetitive projects that allow kids to put their own creative stamp on it!

@@hartfordstitch6571 Thank you for taking the time to respond. We used card stock paper to teach them speed control. We let the foot do the feed, they laughed and smiled. They had so much fun.

You got this! In many ways I teach adults and kids the same way. It’s step-by-step, assume you’re starting from scratch, repeat as often as necessary. You can just move through projects faster (usually). I’ve also learned that while kids always want to put their own creative fingerprint on each project, adults usually like to learn how they “should do it” first. Then they’ll put their own twist on a project. Have fun with it!

What age do you recommend a child begin to use a sewing machine, assuming they are interested? Is six years old too young?

    • @hartfordstitch6571

I have taught kids as young as 4 in my studio. Obviously that is very hand over hand and limited in what they do. By 6 they can really start to remember the steps and complete projects on their own with supervision. By 8 most are ready for group classes.
Of course these are generalizations and every child is different!

@@hartfordstitch6571 thanks for your input. My granddaughter is 5 and loves picking out fabric and creating fabric collages that imitate quilts. I'm just waiting for her to get big enough to reach the foot pedal if I put the sewing machine on a student size desk.

Checkout my video on setting up a sewing space and you’ll see how I set up a space for smaller kids so she doesn’t have to wait to grow first!
