- I've been sewing with my 8-year-old daughter Angela since she was 4 or 5, gradually tackling harder projects and giving her more to do at the sewing machine.
She's made placemats, quilts, dresses, stuffies and even a space helmet from cosplay foam. And today I'm going to share my top tips for sewing with kids so you can help them learn to sew and have a lot of fun doing it.
Along the way I've learned a thing or two about attention spans, what projects to tackle first and how to set them up for success so they have nothing but pride for what they create.
I hope you enjoy these tips and can put them to use the next time you sew with your little ones! Let me know in the comments if there is anything I missed that has worked well for you. - Навчання та стиль
I sew with my great grand sons (no little girls "sigh") and they love it. One calls himself the designer. He can draw a Minecraft character and place all the squares on a project board for me to sew together. We've done an entire lap quilt and several pillows. Two of them actually sew things. We have done pillowcases, pillows and even zipper bags. Each one of my boys have different attentions spans and different degrees of judging themselves. I have to keep reminding one of them that nobody will see his "mistakes". Now my granddaughter (their mother) wants to make a quilt with me. I am loving the time we spend creating toghether. Your tips are all great. Thank you.
That's so special! Thank you for sharing!
As an early childhood educator I love your overall point about process, attention span, and current development levels.
Thank you!
FANNNTASTIC! My granddaughters are all approaching age 5 and I've been in need of exactly these tips! Thank you 😃
Wonderful tips, thanks you so much, my granddaughters are ready to learn.😀
What a wonderful video full of great tips. Thank you. Looking forward to checking out crafting with kids.
This was excellent; thank you!
I just started teaching my five year old granddaughter to sew, starting with teaching hand stitching with yarn on canvas. We are ready to try machine sewing, so I appreciate the tips on ergonomics. I do plan to operate the speed/foot pedal to start. I just bought a machine with a speed control to make things easier than my 40 year old machine that can go crazy! So fun. These are great tips, so happy I found your video.
Thank you for these very helpful tips!
Thank you for sharing. I’m a homeschool mom and I’m incorporating sewing to our homeschool classes. She already made her first quilt and she’s super happy. This tips are great. I need to ask you something. It’s been really hard for me to find good left handed scissors and motions for her. Do you know any good resource to find this?
Ginger does make left handed scissors. They are hands down the best fabric scissors you can get. For little cuts, the micro tips we have on our website work in either hand. Rotary cutters can also go either way. Just reverse the side the blade is on for the rotary cutter.
