+Andrew Stover it's a layered movie. Many people why only watch/perceive on a first level and who arent attracted by skillful craft (120min tracking shot movie) will find the movie somehow (?) a bore/overrated. Such perceptions in opinons are what I believe to be the inherent reasons for evil's existance in this world, as Birdman reaches perfection; if such thing exists

    SPOILER
personally believe that he did die when he shot himself on stage, the movie is one continuous shot up until the moment where he shoots himself then it cuts to the hospital. When he wakes up he has everything he ever wanted. He has a happy daughter, a good review, his wife, the flowers he wanted and he is finally relevant and when Emma stone looks up and smiles he is imagining her seeing him the way he has always seen himself.
So in conclusion I believe that the final scene of the movie is his dying fantasy.

I let people at work borrow Birdman from me. Not one of them finished the movie because it was "an awful story and boring." Which I cannot understand! I watched it a second time where I wasn't just paying attention to the camera. And its still a great film and I'm entertained the entire time. I love it. It is sad we live in a time where a movie with good story with just people talking is supposedly boring.

+LoN3wOlF5tudi0s Yeah its just stupid. General film goers have become pathetic and lazy, wanting the story watered down and fed to them on a spoon. I want to walk away from a film that makes me think, which is what this does. They say, "Him flying around makes no sense." Pay attention to details then! Because its obvious that he is imagining it. It just pisses me off. How dare a film make us think?!

Eddie redmayne spent 4 months in a hospital to study people with ALS disease. He worked with ballerina dancers to learn how to contort his body. Then he spent time with Stephen Hawking himself and his family so that he could accurately portray him. He played a very difficult role and deserved it more than Keaton.

    • @itskelvinn

Keaton played an angry washed up actor while Eddie Redmayne had to perfectly portray the stages and progressions of ALS.

This review summed up everything I wanted to say about this movie.
In my senior year in High School, I had to make 5 different short films. It was ambitious for me to branch out of my comfort zone of making movies about playing with dolls where you can clearly see my hands controlling the toys. When I finished making those 5 "original" short films with real people instead just me, a couple plush toys, and my piece of crap Canon Vixia HFR100 camcorder, 5 critics showed up to my film class. Sweat was coming out of my head like a torrential downpour while I was presenting all 5 films. When it was all over, my final grade from the critics was a C-. Because two critics had to fuck it all up for me and I lost my scholarship to FSU!!! Critics today do not understand what ambitious, talented, hardworking filmmakers create on screen. All they care about is writing their opinion because they wanted to be those filmmakers, but they didn't.
This movies response to critics, as well as the movie as a whole was well-written, well acted, well directed, well shot, and I swear to God if this movie doesn't win Oscars, I don't know what I will do.

So instead of showing things and make you, the viewer, connect the dots and understand the movie, people who hav to be "spoon fed" need someone to do something obvious to understand the movie. Say, someone doing a big speech to explain the whole plot

Switching between Jeremy Jahns' and Chris' Birdman review comments is like switching between completely different worlds... On Jeremy's review most of the comments say the movie either sucked, was boring, was highly overrated, or some combination of the three. Here most people love it and are able to see it for the amazing work it is. I think it's clear Chris has attracted a more mature audience.

    • @5carecrow94

I was thinking the same thing. It's a real shame. I really like Jeremy Jahns, but holy shit, his fanbase....bunch of whiny millenials who don't like a movie unless it has boobs and explosions. They just don't know how to appreciate REAL art. This film as soul, wit, emotion, everything a film should have. Straight up amazing.

+Ryan McLean but it ain't mandatory to empathize in every movie you watch.
Good directors can decide wether they want us to empathise or not, they can craft things the way they want. In examples Alejandro G. Iñarritu is one of them, Michael Mann kept a distance between Collateral's characters and us, and even Michael Mann did a decent try with fucking Shea Lebuf!!

Also, pretty much everyone subbed to Jeremy subs to Chris. So your mature/immature audience argument kind of makes zero sense. Not sure what you were trying to go for there...

This is such an interesting comment. I first came across Jeremy’s channel and loved hearing his input. He’s very entertaining. I was never that much into movies but Jeremy open my eyes a lot. When I first came across Chris’ channel, I didn’t care for it. Thinking back, it had a lot to do with the fact I had a hard time following. Now I love watching films. Old and new. And I also enjoy watching both Jeremy and Chris. However immature some of Jeremy’s fan may seem, keep in mind some are where I was in their own movie enlightenment journey...point is don’t be so judge-mental!

The ending wasn't real. See he really did shoot himself in the head and die on stage.
That whole hospital scene is his fantasy or his last thoughts as he is dying. When he jumps out the window, he has finally died. There is evidence to back this up, see that whole hospital sequence is the only scene in the whole film that has actual cuts like a regular movie. If u think about your fantasies, we see them in short cuts, right? Movies are like a fantasy, but this whole film has no cuts in it except the last 5 mins, why? because it's telling you that what you are seeing isn't real, it's brilliant :)

      @thepatsyb1 10 років тому +2

About the meaning of the movie, I don't think it comes at the end, I think if you want more than face value which is plenty, just watch it again, there is a portion of a second, so not subliminal but meant to be seen for the briefest moment, the scene of the jelly fish on the beach right before the movie starts, between the poem and the movie, it flashes on the screen, if you are looking for this kind of what did it mean thing, you could go back to that mom

    • @thepatsyb1
      @thepatsyb1 10 років тому +3

I'm continuing my reply, I can't get back in to edit! I left off at mom... Moment is the whole word, you could go that far back and say everything from that moment on was not real, was a dream... Many scenes were dreamlike, being caught in your underwear in front of people, and if it is one person's dream, all of the people are a fragment of him, right? So all of the moments played out by everyone were all contained in this man's mind, Keaton, and you could say the end, which is the only part of the movie that was shot like a regular movie, cuts, etc. was the only part that was real, just put it into his life at the moment after the jellyfish right? Or not! But I do recommend another viewing or two if you are looking for and still haven't really been satisfied with the what happened at the end thing.

Afortunadamente, han sabido explotar al máximo sus capacidades y ahora impresionan al mundo, cuando en México no tendrían el apoyo suficiente. Bien por Lubezki, Cuarón, Del Toro, Iñárritu y Prieto!

The best part of this movie was the final hour. Keaton just unloads everything he has got on stage.... in the nude. He is embracing his Birdman, not the character itself but that aura, the charisma, the attitude is what he finally takes inspiration from. Also, each and every scene with Birdman is just.... masterful. It was almost like it was exactly what Keaton was going through after he left his role as Batman. The scene with the film critic is one of the best scenes of all time. It is these little moments that are so powerful, it is no wonder that it was nommed for Oscars.

I wanted to like Birdman wayyyy more than I actually did. I loved the originality, but it had this slightly over-the-top, theatery vibe to it that I really wasn't into. That and the way the camera hardly ever got more than five feet from the actors made it a little exhausting to watch. It said a lot of honest shit about critics, the media, blockbuster movies, the constant battle against mediocrity - it did it frankly and tastefully. Gotta respect a movie that says something real and says it well. I just didn't enjoy it much. Why can't I enjoy art? Why, Chris?

    • @UserNoIDK

This is the perfect comment on Birdman. It was very well acted and had some amazing scenes but I couldn't get into it at all minus the scene where Keaton roasts the critic. Not saying the movie is bad by any means technically, just it caters to a particular audience.

I had the same feeling. I like it, I appreciate it for what it try to do. But I just wasn't excited about this movie at all. I saw the ending coming miles away. At the end of the movie, I just felt tired. Maybe it is because of the camera work.

Completely agree with you. Only that for me it was not a lil over the top, but waaaay over the top. In all sincerity I couldn't relate to any of the characters, they felt alien to me, going on and on on their traumas made me rise my eyebrow and watch the clock.
On the media and theatre themes, maybe because I get criticized everyday due to my line of work, to me all the "bad" stuff happening was something I already knew. Nothing new to see. I got bored as hell. Maybe it's a niche under niche movie, idk :/

It is a film that has to be watched in an open-minded way, i am not saying that you are stupid for not loving it. But i just want you to see the movie from another view point. You have to accept it's themes, it's meanings, it's controversies and the perception of it, maybe you won't agree with them, but the movie is so well develop that you understand them. Birdman is one of those movies that gets better through watching it several times, i reccomend you to give it another try

There is one other important aspect of the “continuous take” feature. Because of the continuity of the take “mirroring” my personal feeling of continuity of consciousness, I completely lost the feeling of being in a cinema and when the film stopped and I walked outside I was completely disorientated. I was still mentally in the theatre on Broadway. I had to walk around for a few minutes to get my bearings again before I could drive home.

I just watched it this move after hearing all the hype about it. I'll admit at first I was not sold thinking this was just an art house movie getting all the buzz cause it was about acting (see how hard we work people?), but as it went along it hit me. I'm a person that complains that there are too many remakes, Micheal Bay movies, and rehash crap out there so the irony that the message came through in the "battle" scene was not lost on me. I did appreciate all the duality of the characters, and really glad to see Keaton back. He was Batman and Beetlejuice to me as a kid. One of the best parts of this whole experience is that his star was resurrected with this movie, mirroring Riggan's rise at film's end. And !!!!!!!!!!!!Spoiler!!!!!!!!!!!
The final scene in the hospital after the shot is a death fantasy-everything worked out the way he wanted it and well ...he flew.
I would recommend this film to anyone.

Soy Mexicano y no había visto su película, shame on me.

Drum only score: Don't forget the in-movie background music of the play that's always very fitting with the scenes going on at the time, and even more so the beautiful Rachmaninov excerpts towards the end of the movie!

Bang on review! I loved the scene where Keaton convinces Norton that he was abused as a child. What I loved about this is that it was a reversal of the earlier scene where Norton rewrote a scene on the spot. The arts of writing and acting masterfully depicted in such a twisted and powerful way!
Was he really flying in the last scene?

gonna watch it for the third time now. My god it's been a while since I've been this excited for a movie, a film that I think about everyday like Under The Skin did for me

Are you joking? are you mad that you going to watch that piece of shit for the third time? Never been this excited? LMAO. cmon people this movie was not good at all not worth watching and defenitly not for a third time. Under the skin was good, but this movie sucks balls. Maybe its only for a older generation who are more dead then living.

I thought the acting, cinematography and editing of this movie were fantastic, but that's all I can say about it positively. The movie feels pretentious, joyless, and dreary. The drum score is perhaps the worst film score in history, to the point that it obscures dialogue. This was made for critics, it feels like the film is saying, "Look at my acting! Look at my cinematography! Look at my style!", the things that critics just love. Now, before anybody says that I "just don't get it," I should point out that I don't need explosions and eye candy to enjoy a movie experience; I mean seriously, my favorite 2014 movie was Boyhood. I love movies that are weird and crazy (Donnie Darko), while dark comedies are another of my preferred genres (Brazil, Nightcrawler), yet despite the fact that Birdman is all of these, I couldn't enjoy it because of how self-congratulatory and unpleasant it was. My grade for it: C+ (great acting and cinematography but little in terms of substance or enjoyment).

This movie was a masterpiece!!! It felt like a inception bomb right into my brain. I (TG) understood all the movie. The only part I thought it was just there for no reason is the lesbian kissing part, the rest was great

san delag You see, I thought that at first, too, but then I realized it's there for the same reason as the big CGI-filled scene with the explosions and monsters. It's commentating on Hollywood crap like shoe-horned romances and pointless sex.

+Marc-André Ouellette Fanboy? Haha nothing I said could make me qualify as a fanboy. I don't know if you're joking or not, I hope you are, because that may be one of the weakest responses I've ever read.
My original point still stands. Jeremy is definitely not the type of critic that is close-minded. It seems like you just can't handle disagreeing with someone in a mature way, so you call them "close-minded". There is a difference between having a certain preference/taste and being close-minded.

hey Chris, I'm really surprised of this review cause you're always mentioning directors, Nolan, Fincher, etc, and I agree with you all the time and I love your critics, but you never mentioned the director, is it because it's Mexican, that tells me you've never seen another movie directed by ALEJANDRO GONZÁLEZ IÑÁRRITU, 21 grams, Babel, Biutiful. You gave all the credit to actors, but that would have not been possible without Alejandro's directing, would it?

I can't remember the last time a movie has taken me on a trip, or let alone made me contemplate the meaning of life and existence. This film does just that. Birdman exemplifies everything important in art and life that I think every person can relate to: Taking the easy way out making quick money versus doing what you know you were meant to do. The film was very good the first time I saw it but its impact lasted, which cannot be said for 99% of films I have viewed. I could spend hours pointing out other brilliant aspects of this film, but Birdman was truly exceptional on every level and will (hopefully) be remembered as one of the great films of our time. Existential jargon aside, perhaps Birdman really was a tale told by and idiot, signifying nothing. Or perhaps it was told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying everything.

I thought it sucked. Too much "drama" and tension. Plus, the hand-held camera-style, combined with the 60-Minute closeups were very annoying--even made you feel claustraphobic. It seemed like the film tried to hard to be artsy and cutting edge, but sorry, it came across as pretentious and indulgent to me. We walked out half way through.

Chris you are amazing. I've never seen a critic of any kind evoke so much passion Into his/hers videos. It is clear that you love movies, just like many of your viewers. You have taught me that is it okay to geek out about movies ( or anything someone may have a passion for), and not care about what other people think. You have inspired me to go Into the film Industry as a career Like I have always wanted, instead of doing some boring, stable desk job to appease everyone else like I was going to. Thankyou
