Better quality paper seems more important to me than expensive paints. Some paper I have tried is sooooo awful and just wastes my paint.

I've heard that from lots of people! I can definitely see that more after this test. I still appreciate inexpensive paper for quick sketches to help me know if I want to spend the time painting a larger version and to get an idea of what I'd do and what I'd change next time. But for pictures I know I want to frame, I plan to go for better paper now!

The big difference will show with time. I used Cotman watercolors for many years, when I was starting out. They are terribly faded, & have not held up well. That is in a good quality, cold press cotton sketchbook. I only use professional paints now.

@@amybair3205 Thank you for sharing! That's such a good point. I'm definitely on the side of using higher quality stuff now that I'm not as much of a newbie just trying to figure out if I like it and how to paint with watercolor. I'm excited to try more quality supplies!

I used cotman at first. Better than artists grade gumbacjers but not very saturated ir not best?

@isabeedemski3635 ohh, what do you use now? And how do you like them? I'm actually looking into buying my first professional paints now.

For sketches I use either cheap paper, or sketchbook, but for painting it has to be "Arches" - the best paper you can try - it's totally different game, also Fabriano is a top notch.

@@ColoringIntrovert yes! I've heard so much about Arches, I can't wait to try it!

Love it! And not trying to brag, but I guessed right. 😂 I do love that little camping scene. I really like the color you used on the blue tent. 💙🥰 I have such a range of quality of paper. I just found a spiral-bound pad of Arches paper that must have been given to me at one point before I did watercolors. I simply did pencil sketches in it b/c I didn't know better. Now I'm like... noooo, that's such good paper! Maybe I'll try using the back. haha

Nice! Good to know there's a noticeable difference. And that's so funny about the Arches paper. Wow! Time to paint those old sketches 🤣

I think so too! I was curious, but then actually doing it was even better and more helpful than I imagined. Glad I'm not the only one who found it interesting!
