The fact that the creator of this crafted characters so vile that it made Muppet Joker the hero is insane
Athena is the only one I truly dislike. Some rich young adult who has no consequences for their actions.
Sage is obviously affected deeply by the mould and carbon monoxide due to having been exposed to it the longest along with Athena. Their childhood being the clear least favourite child visibly impacts them. It's likely they viewed Athena as a parental figure they had to be "good enough" for. They also likely consumed pesticides with Milton during childhood, possibly causing lifelong adverse consequences. I'm sure with time they will dispose of "the rot" and recover.
Milton is truly a victim in this situation. Raised as a child healer and later disowned by their abusive family, they likely saw a parental figure in Athena. Their arc of actually overcoming their abuse in their current living situation and moving into hopefully a better home with The Croaker and their mother is genuinely moving.

The Croaker came in and showed Milton another life that they could live beyond the cult, and Sage was only finally pushed to the brink because of the Croaker's influence.

It is unfortunate that they have since separated. Milton will take him back as a friend if Croaker directly apologizes to him, but Croaker insists he can't face Milton until he, himself, is better.
I like how both Athena and Muppet Joker are unaware of how wierd and unhinged the other is, it creates a sort of mutually ominous build-up where you aren't sure who is in danger from who.
Plus them being unaware while LITERALLY sleeping on top of each other (Croaker under Athena’s bed)
They later married and then separated after she tried crucifying him once(or twice?), tried to murder him a few times, and generally tried brainwashing him. It's only getting wilder lmao.

cult survivor here who was in a small occultic cult that lived together! not to be annoying but this is probably the most i’ve gotten to laugh at something like this since leaving. while being absolutely off the wall and objectively funnier than what we believed, what’s insane to me is that sage and milton’s internal monologue throughout this whole story is so so true to life in a way that’s funny and (in a weird way) validating? “ ‘do you miss him’ ‘i’m not allowed.’ “, milton’s constant struggle with self hatred and being the lowest on the totem pole, sage’s favored right hand man brainwashing.
it’s really hard to tell a cult story that can be funny without being really upsetting, and this is genuinely one of the funniest, and also somehow heartfelt things i’ve seen in the last year and a half.
Not a cult survivor, but it was a hyperfixation for a while, and yeah, it seemed surprisingly similar to what I've read. The Muppet Joker person is genuinely a great writer.

@@Absolutenincompoop it might be a video of someone's fleshing setup for taxidermy purposes, actually! In which case, the bugs in question are actually going to be dermestid beetle larvae, and not fly maggots. You clean as much meat from the bones that you want to preserve as possible and then put the bones in the dermestid tank, who then complete the fleshing process, leaving you with nice clean bones for scientific, taxidermical, or art related purposes.

The Muppet Joker creator is legitimately a great writer. It takes a lot of attention to detail to keep so many plates spinning across so many different characters and platforms. Plus it's actually really hard to create 'bad' writing as well as they do. The entertainment industry ought to be working real hard to recruit people like them instead of pouring money into AI slop.

Honestly the part that's making me go fucking crazy is the like. Perfect iambic pentameter on some of those posts. Like do I wish the rhyme scheme was a little more consistent yes but the meter is,,, actually 100% correct (and feels natural??? Like it's not forced) and it's making me go nuts.

Update: The Catholics exorcised Kermit's kins and he is now kinless and prounoun-less. He also is going by Colter again. He started a fire in the monastery but survived and is now back with Mother. Shockingly, he has also enlisted the help of Athena to regain his kins.

I love how through all of the batshitery, Croaker has a kind of subtle character arc in his relationship with mother. Going from fleeing home after being displeased with his soup to realizing that living with her is not so bad (and also the dark feminism thing) is such a funny through line for such a convaluted drama.
It's kinda like Where the Wild Things if you think about it.

Quick note about the headaches mentioned. Rotting meat produces hydrogen sulfide. It is an incredibly toxic gas that can produce symptoms like headaches and dizziness and is something that you can stop noticing in the environment very quickly, which is why you need to wear a detector for it if you are working in an environment where you could be exposed to it. There may not have been a carbon monoxide leak at all, rather it could have been hydrogen sulfide exposure.

Rewatching for foreshadowing and holy shit. There’s so much. Even before Croaker moves in with the coven and his fanfic outline has vampirism as a major plot point, he writes a poem about flies/maggots/cannibalism. Sage’s blog involves a lot of religious trauma imagery, as does Milton’s, even before their connections and backstories are revealed. Milton’s blog is LOADED with foreshadowing, from the “between the sinners and the saints” line from Hamilton and the Hamilton star to the picture of a snake-handling church (which often DO drink poison as a test of faith). Athena’s privilege is hinted at with lines from Gerard- “the jealousy from others that my vessel endures breaks my heart” etc. Gerard also refers to “the swarm,” revealing the nature of The Rot before we’ve ever even heard of the thing.

There is something so prescient & compelling that Athena gets to ruin multiple ppl's lives & finances & then run off into the sunset like nothing happened. F Scott Fitzgerald could *never* .
It was impressive how despite the general silliness of this whole thing, it was still honestly haunting how Athena could just take advantage of and abuse two cult survivors, form her own insane cult that put everyone in constant danger, and then renounce it in its entirety and return to a life of privilege after demanding total devotion from her followers. Like the black mold was definitely a contributor, but no way was it the sole thing responsible for this whole debacle. It’s crazy how the Muppet Hole story actually has me analyzing its characters and themes😭

I don't necessarily think that the Croaker is Strange Aeons. But they either watch her videos or are obsessed with the same internet drama because this is the most unhinged crossover of the Portland Polycule, Bit of Earth, and the three weed smorking girlfriends (and probably some other stuff I forgot)

i'm so obsessed with the set design for each character. athena gets the bedroom because she's the only one permitted to sleep on the bed, milton is in the closet because he has to sleep there for a month, sage is on the couch because she swaps with milton (until he's inevitably banished to Closet Dimension), and the croaker has a mostly green set design with books in the background because he is a writer. the attention to detail is insane
edit: i feel so bad for milton because the self-loathing and religious guilt is so relatable
EDIT 2: i don't know if this is intentional, but portraying athena with a macbook (rather than a phone that everyone else uses) because she's revealed later to have been rich all along is actually genius Edit 3: on further inspection it appears sage also has the macbook but i'm sort of excusing that as sage being closer to athena as a trusted individual and also being the only one with a car and job (edit 3: she also does budgeting for the house)

Fun bit of foreshadowing: Kermit being temporarily exempt from paying rent and Athena telling the anon that they can come live with them rent free - almost like she can actually afford to pay for the apartament by herself, just chooses not to.
Also, why does Sage and Milton's relationship so heavily parallel Kermit's unhinged rivalry with Bucephalus? Is that intentional? One sibling, bitter about the other being the favorite child, suddenly finds themself in a position of power above them and immediately forces them to take in poison (be it avocados or rotting meat fumes in the closet), and explicitly compares their situation to that of Cain and Abel? Why does this Tumblr ARG centered around muppet fucking have, like, themes? And symbolism? Is the Croaker's decision to rescue Milton partially inspired by regret and desire to atone for causing Bucephalus' death, also, do I have brainworms?

My friends tried to explain this lore to me while we were grabbing sushi at night. Felt like I was actually going insane. Table next to us was trying to ignore us but I could see their glances 😭
Muppetfucking aside, this is unironically a very fun exploration of social media as a medium for creative writing. Athena is a fun villain who gets gradually more deranged, allusions to Shakespeare (iambic pentameter poetry) and possibly Dracula (vampire thralls eating bugs and vermin) hint at a background in creative writing, and distinct character voices make for a very engaging read. I will say this, though: the author unabomber-ed themself by using the same turn of phrase for different characters (“screaming in pleasure”) when unrelated writers would probably use different words. Audience participation from anons takes it to another level. A wild piece of multimodal interactive horror fiction…that also involves a protagonist who is sexually attracted to Kermit the Frog.
Yeah, I feel like a normal person would just say "He just kept moaning" or "dude was jacking off loudly".

There is so much... poetry in here that I genuinely like. The aesthetic words they use around the rot sometimes are pretty tasty and well combined. Even the Croakers poems contain some lines that are just... good.

Yeah, it's kind of like when someone with a lot of dance training dances "badly," but it's in a way that's weirdly impressive. They're writing badly but the way a person who can write well would, which makes sense, since they're almost certainly a fake account. Some of it is just good, but even when it's bad, it's skillful.

I cannot explain why, but this is becoming me new comfort video. I think it's the combination of how you read their posts and portray each character.
I think there is something genuinely interesting about the Muppet Joker's stories that honestly does make me think that this silly tumblr blog is genuinely showing the next step in how horror or horror adjacent stories are adapting to the new medium of social media. The thing with the Muppet Joker's stuff that does make me genuinely believe that this is faked is that all of these blogs are so absolutely through in sharing so many coherent details about their personal lives and experiences. Even if the audience is confused at first, the blogs will usually reveal some insane detail or "realize" something and they will always share it publically in a way people just normally wouldnt do. One person sharing weird personal details about their life and updating it frequently enough people can follow is one thing, but four people all doing the same at roughly the same time and without a lot of contradictions in the actual events that happened is more than a coincidence.
And I finally got why that is. Its because this is genuinely adapting the style of Dracula, Frankenstein, or HP Lovecraft's work to a modern medium. Let me explain.
In all of these influential horror novels, the events taking place in them are all told to the audience through the filter of them being a personal account of one or more of the surviving characters. Dracula in particular is told through several journal entries being made mostly in the moment by the various characters in the novel. Of course, this medium does still suffer from the same issue as the tumblr blog stories in terms of the characters being incredibly detailed with their account and remembering and recounting things far more accurately than you might expect of someone in their situation, but still. You could still adapt these stories like this in the modern day, but an audience is less likely to believe these could be real events due to both the conventions of the genre making them expect it.
Social media on the other hand has given people a platform to share the inner details of their lives to potentially millions of people and it is TERRIFYING. I guarantee you for every weird and fucked up fake story the Muppet Joker or similar blogs have made there is at least 5 more fucked up but true events people are just willing to share out to the internet with no shame whatsoever. I think whatever dark and twisted mind behind the Muppet Joker knows this and is taking full advantage of the medium to tell their stories. The only other place I've seen be quite so effective in using the internet or social media as a medium for conveying a horror story is The Magnus Protocol, but even then that is a podcast and not a series of tumblr blogs and posts. (Also I think they picked the perfect platforms to post on because Tumblr is full of weirdos that will gladly commit to any bit given and Reddit is already full of fake stories anyway and its very believable a couple of people in these stories would go to a subreddit asking for advice)
This is probably very incomprehensible, but TLDR I 100% believe the Croaker when he says he is an english major who's writing is perfection incarnate.

The way I was rooting for Milton all the way through and was overjoyed that him and The Croaker established an honest to God friendship speaks to how well written all of this is I think.
The way I was rooting for Milton the whole time and was genuinely happy when he escaped with the Croaker really says a lot about how well-written and performed this is. The twists and turns, the reveal (SPOILERS) the muppet hole was the proxy, the reveal (SPOILERS) it was all black mould. the comedic breaks "why are you so hateful? we will all rot together and be eaten by the same worms" goes hard lol. genuinely got so into this.
Also the twist of it all being the mould links back to the imagery of rot and decay and MCR's 2022-23 Swarm tour. Croaker understands THEME babey we love it
