Starfish's Story

- Starfish was left on the beach in a cardboard box, unable to stand or walk. Animal Control brought the disabled 10-week-old German shepherd puppy to the Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS). From an initial diagnosis that endangered her life to completing physical therapy, watch how Starfish faced a strange but common canine medical problem called swimmers syndrome. Starfish's treatment is being paid for by the FAAS Angel Fund, the not-for-profit shelter's emergency medical fund for sick and injured homeless animals, which relies on donations from the public. Help Starfish's adoptive family, the Grays, complete her rehab by going to FAAS's GoFundMe page at www.gofundme.com/supportteams... 100% of your donation is tax deductible as FAAS is a 501c3 organization. Thank you!

OUR BRYDIE WAS BORN WITH SWIMMERS SYNDROME, BUT OUR VET HANDLED IT DIFFERENTLY - HE PUT HER INTO PLASTER CASTS ON EACH LEG, THEN HOBBLED THE TWO LEGS TOGETHER - HER PLASTER CASTS WERE CHANGED EVERY WEEK FOR A TOTAL OF 6 WEEKS, DURING WHICH TIME HE CHANGE THE CASTS EACH WEEK, AND AFTER 4 WEEKS REMOVED THE HOBBLES.....SHE WAS A FUNNY WEE THING BUT HAD A WONDERFUL LIFE AND LIVED TO 16 YEARS OF AGE, QUITE AN ACHIEVEMENT FOR A GERMAN SHEPHERD.....I WOULD DO IT AGAIN IT WAS A WONDERFUL FEELING.....
Wow @ 16 years! Thank God she had loving, dedicated pet parents like you and a veterinarian who GENUINELY cares about animals, unlike some of those quacks out there who don't deserve to have a license to practice veterinary medicine. . . not even on an ant!
Wonderful people, Wonderful dog 💜💜💜 Thank you, World IS more beautiful with people like you 💜
Nice to see folks who know how to help the dog and care to help.

Thank you FAAS for saving and rehabilitating Starfish and for all you do for the animals!
aaaaah so good
What a fantastically uplifting story! Thank you! ❤️
Ty for saving Starfish’s life… I don’t understand why vets assume that someone won’t want to put in the time and effort. Sadly Human doctors aren’t much better. My uncle had a tiny tumor in his lung last year and was told that his “only” option was to have that lung removed and be on oxygen for he rest of his life. He was also told that NO doctor would give him a different diagnosis. He got three other opinions from three other doctors: two of whom said Chemo/Radiation therapy… the last suggested a rather new surgery where they could remover the tumor from in his lung with a laser. He went with the last one and found out the tumor WASNT even cancerous. Two weeks later the first doctor called telling him he HAD to come in and have the MAJOR surgery otherwise he could die. The doctor is now in the middle of a malpractice lawsuit with multiple other former patients
I raised a jack Russell runt with swimmers. Please keep an eye on arthritis. She passed away at 9 years old and walking was a struggle. I could never find information on the pups when geriatric to see how they did
beautiful story
Who came here from The Dodo? By the way great job Starfish!
This is a wonderful story, my mom was a vet tech and this sounds like something she would have done. Is there any possibility of getting pet insurance for her that would cover hip dysplasia (and possibly arthritis)? Might be worth looking into given GSDs disposition towards it and then in addition to having this disorder.
gives me tears! way to go starfish!!
I would. put that vet down no compassion or empathy for that incredible determined dog god bless
i could watch this all day with smiles and tears. you go Starfish!! yeah!!
Hi! This is Carla Thornton with Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS), the animal shelter that rescued Starfish and placed her with the Gray family. FAAS has started a GoFund fund for the Grays to help them complete the final steps of Starfish's rehabilitation from swimmer's syndrome. And because FAAS is a 501c 3 charitable organization, your donation is 100% tax deductible. Go here if you would like to support Starfish: www.gofundme.com/supportteamstarfish
This funding effort is to pay for two hip operations the Grays were told Starfish needed after check-up x-rays revealed she has severe dysplasia. She has had one of the operations and will eventually have the other. The prognosis is excellent for Starfish to have a long, active life. Thank you for caring about Starfish and all homeless animals!
Such a beautiful story, made me cry 🥹
Thank you so much for this. Gives me hope in human beings.
Thank God for FAAS! Good bless you for not giving up on this sweet soul. Thank you for recognizing that her life matters and she is worth saving.
I absolutely DETEST loser veterinarians who are always so quick to want to euthanize an animal instead of really putting in some fricken effort and giving the animal a fighting chance! It's really, really disgusting and callous! Unfortunately, there are WAY TOO MANY veterinarians like that out there and people actually trust them. I wonder id these so called veterinarians had an ailing mother, or even worse yet, a terminally ill child , would they be that quick to give up on them and bury them before they're even dead.🤔
🙏🙏

Starfish is a German shepherd.
Does Starfish have more than 340k views as of now, 6/15/21 ❓If all of us who were and are so inspired by the beautiful " Starfish", just cont. To keep her storey alive, many more people will be able to share this ever so extrodinairy ,inspiring event also. hopefully ,we may even see a major amt. Of donations come in so many, many more animals can be saved and have a chance for a happy life.
Please let's all try to help in that area.
Thank you. Judith B.🌹🙏💞🐾
Shame on the 1st vet. Starfish proved him wrong!
Sooo cute omg
Whoever gave the wrong diagnosis and said this adorable little fluffpuppy should be put down shouldn't be anywhere near animals. I'm sure I speak for every pup and animal lover when I say THANK YOU!!!! to the rescuers and the people that cared enough to help this adorable little Love Bug ❤❤❤❤❤
How’s he doing now?
The first vet could learn a few lessons, the 1st and most important is COMPASSION!! HOW DARE HIM WANT TO EUTHANIZE 😡
Does anyone know what causes swimmers syndrome? Is it because she was left in a small area and unable to move and not develop proper leg muscle/tendon growth?
What breed is Starfish? So cute !
Olivia Briony German shepherd
