Having had some magical moments both playing guitar and in life, I found Tims explanation of his magical moments and initial desire to chase the magic so wise and profound. What a beautiful soul he is. Thank you so much for sharing this interview. Thanks also John for your beautiful way of asking deep questions and letting Tim have the space and time to think and talk.
❤
@gabrielfiedler5550 thanks so much for sharing this note. Tim is one of the cats that everybody seems to trust - because he IS wise. I'm really flattered you like the interview. I'm pretty sure that non-musicians don't understand how much a magic moment can shape your life. Not all of us have easy access to those transcendent experiences - but if you experience that feeling just one, it will never be forgotten. Glad to hear you've had some of those moments. Be well.
“Your fallback plan is a prediction”. Stunning statement!
Agreed. Wish I would have heard that when I was a teenager.
Tim Lerch is such a wonderful and wise person. I'm so glad this interview exists and that you shared it with the world.
It really was my pleasure. Glad you enjoyed it.
May dad just passed April 9 2024. i looked after him 7 days a week for 2 years. I had emergency spinal fusion surgery at Christmas and can barely walk to boot. I love guitar. My thrill was hanging with the Hellecasters a few times and Albert Lee a bunch. I have no talent myself though. I am so grateful to see great players like Tim, at least on the internet. I also saw Lenny Breau many times about 50 years ago.
Sorry for your loss. About guitar: sounds like you have good taste in music; nobody needs to be talented to enjoy guitar or music… but most people probably have more talent inside themselves than they think.
"You invite a note into existence, you decide what it''s life is going to be like, & you decide when it dies. "
That sentence caught me off guard.
I see a trend with mastery in various fields of starting the arc by seeing how much more the thing can take: how many more flavors can I put into this dish without making it too overwhelming? How many more harmonies can I put on this song while keeping it sounding good? Then eventually coming back around to "How much can I take away while retaining the essence of what I'm trying to convey?" I have grown to truly respect Tim's pithiness, both musically and in spoken communication, and am really interested to hear more improvised polyphony and where that takes him. I believe that's very interesting and unusual ground to break.
I agree with you (and Tim) on this concept. I was listening to some of Beethoven’s adagio movements a while back. All that is there is the melody and the harmony - in its simplest form. No pyrotechnics. Just the essence of the ideas. And it is so beautiful. There is definitely something to finding the essence.
The jazz dude abides.
Man, that's pretty funny.
Hi. My father just passed away and this gave me great comfort. A truly deep interview. Thank you.
Sorry for your loss. Glad you were able to get something helpful from this interview. Tim is a special guy and I'm glad we got into the deep topics. Be well.
Going for less-not more in playing. True Wisdom!!
Yes!!!
Yes!!!
Guitarists are monks, deep down. Some of them know. What a beautiful soul and artist. Thanks so much for the interview. Blessings!
Happy to hear you enjoyed the interview. Tim has a special way of being in the world. So interesting how he approaches music, teaching, and learning.
Tim is a monster guitarist. Please come to Toronto. Please The Rex hosts jazz 7 days a week here. lorne lofsky (oscar peterson) just played there. thanks Tim
7 days a week! Dang! That’s impressive.
What a wonderful Interview! Thank you very much!
Thanks for listening. Appreciate you spending the time to hear what Tim had to say.
Great interview! But the background noise is very annoying 😢
Glad you liked the interview. I agree about the background noise. The air conditioning in the room was sooo loud. I tried to remove as much background hiss as possible in post…
The noise is there because there is no rug in the room to dampen it.
I was so happy to hear you guys talking about Ted! I would like to spend my life studying what I learned from Ted and passing on his greatness to future generations. I miss El Dorado apartment !! I hope Ted's story will be remembered forever ! Thank you SO MUCH again !!!
Glad you enjoyed it. Ted had a huge impact on my life too. Be well. Thanks for watching.
Just stumbled upon your channel. Excellent interview !!!!!!! I have subscribed.

It's nice when the air conditioning goes off at 18.42
Man, the AC and the train station out back! Hope you enjoyed what Tim had to say. I have a nice, quiet, little interview studio in my hometown... but interviews on the road are a little bit like playing an outdoor gig - you never know what you're gonna get.
@@guitarmagic Somehow, Tim keeps the Zen vibe going throughout!
The phrase "Blues, jazz, and fingerstyle guitar" is NOT consistent with the word "nerd"!
Nerd is not a pejorative term - it is a badge of honor!!!
@@guitarmagic I guess I'm good then 🤣
