An Italian Tries American FROZEN DESSERTS & DRINKS | Milkshakes, Ice Cream Floats, Sonic Slushes, Lindy's Italian Ice
Today's strategy for beating the heat is to try a bunch of classic, American frozen desserts... or maybe I should call them frozen drinks? Iced novelties? The term is up for debate, I would appreciate some input from you all...
Anyway, in this video I introduce Eva to some new treats and, in her typical fashion, she introduces me to a chilling surprise...

Guys, Inspired by your video back in May, on the non-existent region of Italy (Campobasso,Capracotta), I took June and July and did a trip around south Italy and Sicilia, by train from Firenze. Among the highlights were Matera, Taormina, Palermo, Sant'Agnello and Ortegia. It was a fantastic experience, and I discovered a lot of new (for me) foods, including the granita alla mandorla that Eva made in this video. I want to thank you guys for inspiring me to get off my butt and do the traveling. Grazie mille, ragazzi!

I think her refined palate being able to taste the sugar is really telling of American foods. To us these frozen treats aren't all that sugary because we've been conditioned to accept that sheer level of sugar as being normal since we were kids. Definitely explains the obesity issues in America.

I agree. Everything in the US tastes too sweet to me. The thing is also that these things were never meant to be eaten as substitutes for real food. I'm guessing that before these big corporate franchises had so many locations people took kids to a soda fountain for a treat where the food were more normal, not as processed and full of dyes etc.. The mass production and more customers had led to more sugar and fillers. Non-food.

Many of the 170 gelaterias in my hometown Vienna are owned by Italian families who came to the city in the 19th century from the poor mountain valleys of the (now) Italian region of Trentino when Northern Italy was part of the Austrian-Hungarian empire. In search for a better life in the empire's capital, they started to sell ice cream, a thing that was already popular in Italy but mostly unknown to a broader Viennese population. Many of the ice cream shops are closed during winter and the families spend some time in the Italian valleys they originally came from over 100 years ago.

The drinks are “American Fountain Drinks” as they all originated from the drug store soda fountains . The Italian Ice’s and Slushies are frozen treats and truly descended from Italian Granita’s . Italian ices we’re introduced by immigrants as freshly scooped granitas and sold in paper cups like an ice cream cone in Italian neighborhoods from rolling carts in the summer. Later, with advanced refrigeration, they began to package them in cups with lids for all year round convenience. You missed ice cream sodas, malteds and egg creams.

Similar to other comments here, I haven’t found anyone outside North America who likes root beer. My sister-in-law is Brazilian/Japanese, and she says the same thing - root beer is soapy, and medicinal-tasting. But I think every culture has a soda or drink that’s more endemic to its region that outsiders rarely enjoy. 🤷🏻‍♂️
But yeah, root beer floats are AWESOME. I like to actually mix it all up so the consistency is like a blend of soda and ice cream. And experimenting with different ice cream/soda combinations is really great. Orange cream float being another personal favorite.

It was made by an Italian and Eva...it was based on the granita you speak of. I grew up in an Italian neighborhood. Mama mia! Everything was so good. Originally as a kid this was sold by this old Italian guy who would scoop the ice from a container in an ice cart. Cherry and lemon were the original flavors. Eventually, they were mass produced under the name Marinos or Ginos. These were the best. Luigis and everything else was no comparison. Buon appetito!

It is quite common for root beer to be made with wintergreen flavoring, which is the same flavoring as many toothpaste brands. Most people who didn't grow up with root beer think they are drinking mouth wash and wince in digust.

I think you should have made her try another float with a different tast, because the idea doesn't sound bad, it's icecream in a drink

I believe the old-fashioned general classification for these types of treats is "fountain drinks", because they came from a 'soda fountain' at a local drug store or candy shop.

My favorite, the Boston Cooler: A vanilla ice cream float made Vernor’s Ginger Ale. It MUST be Vernor’s, a full-bodied ginger ale originally from Detroit. Boston Coolers are great with chocolate ice cream too.

In Brazil we have a drink called "Limonada Suiça", translated as "Swiss Lemonade", but I don't think it has anything to do with Switzerland. It's made with lime, ice, water and sugar (or the sweetener of your choice). So you cut a few limes and blend everything, strain it and then you have Swiss Lemonade.

really enjoyed this. Would love to see more like this with you introducing her to American foods. For example good Barbeque , buffalo wings, corn dog, Reuben, lobster roll. etc.. Lots of fun thanks for the video.

There's a huge granita tradition in the Philly area. Everyone calls it "wooder ice" (which is just 'water' in the local accent spelled out).
It's much more like your homemade stuff than the things you get in the freezer aisle. I had some recently and I think I liked it more as a kid though.

My sister put one of those "maraschino" cherries in the compost pile, and it NEVER decomposed or changed color!!!

As a child growing up in central New Jersey, Grillo's Italian Ice in Plainfield, NJ was THE place to go. A special treat. Now for something less nostalgic...a helpful hint for those in the colonoscopy years: You know that liquid diet you have the day before? Make a granita! I buy white grape juice and make a granita from it, and it's almost like food -- far more than just drinking the juice.

Thanks Eva & Harper -- those two recipes look wonderful and wonderfully easy for a nice hot day. Harper, I adore root beer floats too. I think the proper category is "frozen desserts".

Harper, what about the new maple syrup poured onto the springtime snow ? Now that must be the original American ice treat.

I have that same blender! The kitchen ninja can turn ice into snow like nothing I have ever seen.
