Custom 4 inch Turbo back exhaust system anyone? We experiment slapping on both Flowmaster Delta 40 and Borla XR1 mufflers against one another with our 3.2 VR6 Audi RS3.

Borla all the way, had a TT tuning exhaust and race pipe on my old 12v vr and was always told it sounded nicer than other vr exhausts
That’s so crazy…yup I had a techtonics cat back that came with a borla muffler on my 12v vr6 turbo too. I couldn’t go a single day without someone complementing the sound. I really miss my 12v…this mk6 Golf R I have now is nowhere near as special as my old 12v
@@razerone49 I hear you there miss my 12v as well. I also had an electronic dump built into my test pipe lol was fun and extremely loud but definitely broke some necks when you'd open it up haha.
My TDi isn't near as good sounding but still a blast to drive with some mods

I actually thought that it sounded more "wookie" when you started it on the Borla. Also I daily my cars and prefer my exhaust to be more on the quiet side for comfort. Especially for when I go on road trips. So that's another reason I'd choose the Borla.
Borla = great natural VR6 noises, Flowmaster = perfect daily milder VR6 noises
I like'it...sound is AMAZING ''Flowmaster''...Flowmaster is definitely something in between and it's more for daily ride and some Drag races , but Borla is only for Drag races my opinion... it didn't fit in my ears for a daily ride....and now it's up to you brother George what you want this beautiful work for you , Fam...wouldn't want anyone to be offended , but that's my opinion... greetings from Croatia
Taste is subjective … I like the flow master better … borla seemed too tamed
Borla never let me down on my civic hatchback eg and was the loudest exhaust & I got a lot of compliments while everyone sported the mainstream brands! That sounds perfect!

flowmaster has got fuller rounded sound.More complete sound.
I like higher pitched 6-cylinder sounds... So for me it's Flowmaster.
But I can see the appeal of the Borla. Nice throaty-deep sound. Sounds more like a VR motor should.

I prefer the Magnaflow. Very similar to the Borla but i think the overall sound is better, I have them on a 3.0VRT 12v and a V8 Touareg.
Might have to give them a try 💪
Borla all day, and yes TT exhaust systems even made 8V sound good and pop when downshifting! Great video man!!

The Flowmaster has a nice raw sound, but I prefer the lower more refined growl of the Borla 👍🏻
Flowmaster sounds better in my opinion.
IMO, Borla sounds better, burbles sound fantastic. I think Flowmasters are designed more for American muscle cars more than Euro specs🤙
I do prefer the borla. I just think you give way too much attention to the haters. Like you've an audience that digs what you're doing but it feels your always speaking to the "others".
My son has a 2.8 VR6, had a glass pack right off the manifold, it was obnoxious! Talked him into putting a Flow Master FLOWFX muffler on it. It is so much better! He even likes it more now. I have the same muffler on my 1.8T, it's straight through so it's still loud when you get on it! I say Borla, simply because I'd think 2 step would eventually pop a chambered muffler.

More than cool! You are defying the next generation . Taking a solid ass trans off a decent motor and slapping it to a solid ass motor .. The daza is cool and all but with the cost and limit ; not so worth it.

If performance was the only or number one goal, the obvious answer is to test them at the strip/track and pick the quickest regardless of sound.
But, for a street/strip car, sound is a big factor, and is also subjective.
I've used both Flowmaster and Borla, and MY view is that Flowmaters sound better on larger V-8's, and Borlas on the 6 cylinder and under cars. But George, go with what YOU like, and I believe real gearheads will always support you. "Variety is the spice of life".

Borla for sure. The flownaster toned down the vr too much. Still sounded good but not as good as the borla.
That Borla muffler is like adding all the perfect ingredients to your build. With the flowmaster it sounds like the VR is going through puberty and with the Borla it sounds like a man . Great build.
Yup. I always said the Borla sounded like it had bigger balls than all the other exhausts for the VR

I like the sound of both mufflers, the flowmaster had the old 12v tone, the borla let the turbo have a say in the sound, sounded a lot more modern but still a VR. Borla for the win.
The 12V and 24V swaps videos were great info. I've slowly been working my way back through watching all your videos. Have you done a video that covers transmissions and mods you have done to them in the cars you have? I haven't found one yet if you have.
We haven’t, however perhaps we should make a video to cover that basis

If you do can you cover all you cars, what you have done to awd systems to get them to hold up to the abuse, improvement modifications and anything else that's interesting. I'm learning all I can about the VR series engines for a mid engine conversion I am currently working on. Your channel has been a huge help.

Borla definitely, much cleaner true vr6 sound.
I have a Passat W8, unequal length exhaust ports just like a vr. I went through the same process and ended up using the Flowmaster Super HP2. They label it as laminar flow, which could be marketing bs, but they sound great on that engine, and zero drone. For the 2 you tested here, I prefer the Borla.
Got a Borla on my R32 and I like it because its pretty tame in the low end but sings in WOT. I have the Borla full cat back NA so it's not quite as loud but I'm happy with the sound in the end. Both sound great but the Borla did keep that wookie sound more so than the Flowmaster.
Borla for sure brought out the true Wookie sound

Have a mkv r32 with 3” cat back with a flowmaster super 44. It’s definitely loud but many people have complimented me on the sound. All personal preference at the end of the day for exhaust setups

My preference is the Borla for this application. I run a vibrant exhaust at the moment, but I may pick up a borla and give it a try.

Borla ftw! So compact with great clearance. Running my STK 2.7 with the 3 inch borla xr1! Amazing sound! Using the xr1 under the middle section and 3 inch pipe to the tips...sounds the same! You'll love it!
I liked the flow master sound. Would of liked to hear more of that on the road. But its what you like. Sounds like you made up your mind that the borla wins. My favorite thing is you saying you do you and not letting others tell you that you ruined your car when they dont even work on there own car. Inspiring as always george!!

Flowmaster makes a different style muffler that they call "laminar flow." They're different internally to their standard chambered mufflers. I personally run a Super HP2 shorty in place of the factory resonator on my MK4 12V combined with a Magnaflow rear muffler swap. I feel that some of the lopeyness or "wookie" sound was removed and the sound became more consistent and smoother with the HP2 swap, which I personally prefer (I have a few sound clips on my channel). VRs in general sound better to me with straight-through style mufflers.

Hard to tell over the mic, but I like it. I need to hear you finish out the system to fully decide. You should drive around with the flowmaster just to see what it sounds like. ( I lean borla too but id like to hear the flowmaster under load. You ought to try a magnaflow too, they allow for some good wholesome VR sound too.
"straight pipe all the way" is a young mans game. I left those days behind close to 10 years ago now. (iam 34 ) Straight pipe just isnt practical for every day life.
Damn it’s so weird hearing this thing sound almost identical to my old 12v VRT. It’s hard to beat Borla on the VR.

Borla for the win, for sure. As for the 5 cyl not sounding good at low rpm’s… idk bro. I’ve heard some nice exhaust setups on the RS3 that sounded really nice at sub-4k rpm’s. The right downpipe/midpipes combo makes all the difference. That 2.5 5cyl sounds just like a baby V10, and the R8 sounds great at low rpm’s. 😂 But I understand, the VR6 is a total different sound!

Has the exhaust quieted down much after the muffler break in as well. Not sure if the F.M. Provides a quieter ride due to the chambering. My S3 exhaust setup is ridiculous with drone due to the dct. Have had a drone j pipe installed along with a resonator but does very little especially driving with the wife. Gets annoying after a few min. Any suggestions would be helpful. Stock dp, with AWE straight through 3 inch. Current setup. I like the sound of both you sampled but wondering which one to try out

do you think the vr6 favors a larger diameter exhaust(from downpipe all the way to tips, or even from cat back)? you got a lot of volume out of that borla xr1 drive, do you have any other exhaust modifications? your cars turbo too,,which muffles exhaust some.
