Yanis Varoufakis on Europe's Energy Crisis, War in Ukraine & Crackdown After Queen's Death
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 вер 2022
- We look at how the Ukraine war is contributing to an energy crisis across Europe with Greek politician and economist Yanis Varoufakis. Last week Russia announced it would not resume sending natural gas to Europe via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, blaming Western sanctions for supposed maintenance delays keeping the gas shut off. Prior to the war, Russia supplied Europe with 40% of its natural gas, but now European nations must find ways to cope with fuel shortages and soaring energy prices as winter approaches. Varoufakis says a history of market liberalization and reliance on cheap Russian gas has left the continent scrambling, in turn pushing up energy costs in the Global South as richer European countries buy up other sources of energy. "Yet again, Europe is exporting misery to the rest of the world," says Varoufakis, a member of the Greek Parliament and former finance minister. His latest piece for Project Syndicate is "Time to Blow Up Electricity Markets."

Energy companies were once goverment owned IN EUROPE.
Now they are private companies which main object is make profit.
Its the same thing. Private companies own the government but gloves are off.
@@aachoocrony5754 Not the same thing. Private companies now own the government. Previously, the government, through robust policies, controlled the private sector. To the contrary, private industries now control the government, which is a classic example of fascism. When the government controlled public infrastructure, while there was some inefficiency, the prices were much more reasonable.
@@agtucker8 I understand your point but that was just a facade. They've taken their mask off now because they need to cut past the bureaucracy. The situation demands it. It becomes more and more blatant. Price caps? Sounds like socialism responding to outside geopolitical pressures. The EU was always a fascist state. A German/French colonial empire. Just another process of centralization as the West/G7/NATO prepare for economic and hot war.
Thats right. He knows nothing about the many other possibilities. As I see it we have made some big improvement by much much private ownership even there is some backfire too.
So the State in Fx Denmark do its best to regulate and compensate for the backfire.
In Creece they only has one type of cars on the state owned streets too - hrrrmpf :(

Democracy died long ago in the west, if it ever really existed.
All this misery would stop if the EU countries, USA and NATO conceded that the 2014 Minsk agreement was breached, and since then Ukrainian militants have murdered over 10,000 citizens of Donbas. Russia only wants to get back to the Minsk agreement, and not see NATO advance one metre eastward. Let's talk about that.
You should move to Russia, since you think they are so reasonable. Don't call the war a war or go to jail for 15 years. Maybe you could run against Putin but watch for poisoning. You show your ignorance of history, and a willingness to believe anything. Fighting nazi's. O brother.
Exactly well said truth. That the mainstream media ignores while lying about many aspects of the whole situation. Like in the intro here where she says Russia have closed down the gas line with no context given whatsoever. No mention of the EU price caps on gas which is contract breaking and which gave Russia no other choice.
Agree with you 100%❗
Unfortunately, Amy and much of the left are reluctant to discuss this in any depth.

I'm from Brazil but I live in Germany for 7 years, watching the news and talking to people from both places one can tell that there's a divide regarding Russia's and Putin's image. The US and the EU live in a bubble and assume that the rest of the world shares the same opinion. As a matter of fact, from the exploited countries' perspective to watch the US/EU lecturing morality to whatever country seems quite ridicule

it's not an energy crisis,. it's a situation created by profiteering by energy companies making record breaking profits (46 billion in 3 months) and increasing the prices because of the conflict in ukraine, governments are allowing this situation because they also reap the benefits of increased consumer pricing through taxation.
The USA's Nuclear energy is completely reliant on refined uranium rods from Russia (excluded from sanctions) or china.

Not just electricity, but all utilities should be government owned public services as they (as was stated) natural monopolies.

Had there been European leadership in dealing with Russia's security concerns, Ukraine's progress towards liberalization( socially & economically) Perhaps this war would have never started! Europe could have had secure energy supplies from both Ukraine & Russia. Ukraine would have been granted trade agreements with Europe as a non-aligned country, calming Russia security concerns on it's western flank. Instead, Europe allowed the US & British to arm, train Ukraine's military with offensive weapons & Intel on Russia troop movement before the invasion. Lack of European leadership created this cluster! Ursula jumped on the US & British bandwagon and is spewing lies about the cause of this war! Europe needs a come to Jesus moment, and put Europe first! Take the American's and British out of this mess or Europe will pay a high price for it's lack of leadership!
👍
Britain helped train Ukranian troops after Russia annexed/invaded Crimea in 2014. The commentators (although I'm weary of the biased press) seem to indicate that Putin was threatened by talk of Ukraine joining the EU. Post 2014 it would have made more sense for Germany to accelerate plans for renewables and be less reliant on Russia for gas.
There are two things which I think proves that Russia doesnt care about the NATO.:
1. Russia's second biggest city St.Petersburg is on the Finnish Border. Russia didnt even show 5 per cent of their aggression which they are showing towards the Ukrainians towards Finnland. The reason for that is that Russia exactly knows what kind of power they possess. No country in the world would ever even think about attacking Russian mainland. Its seven months into the Ukrainian war and the Russians are mainly using old soviet weapons. They barely touched the new stuff.
2. Ukraine has the second largest oil and gas reserves in Europe after Norway which are coincidentally located in Eastern Ukraine and in the area around the Crimean Island in the Black sea. Russia doesnt want any competition as 70 per cent of their income consists of oil and gas.
I agree that a stronger European leadership is needed but I don't think you actually know how is the situation here in Europe.
The countries who are pushing the most against Russia are actually the East European countries, like Poland, Romania, Lithuania, etc. These countries have been under the Soviet domination and they never want to go back to that. They are pushing for more help to Ukraine, it's not just the US or UK.
Russia all of a sudden has become a huge threat again and the whole European continent is rearming in a way that we haven't seen since WW2. Germany and Poland are preparing in case another front opens.
Eventually, at some point, the energy crisis will finish, security is the main concern now.

NATO has been arming, training and funding /Vazi battalions like Azov for 9 years, and used ethnic cleansing on Russia's border to draw it into an expensive conflict, and to create a pretext for sanctions which are now severing the connections between German industry and Russian energy. The people of Europe and UK are merely collateral damage. Although, you know, as Victoria Nuland said during the coup, "Fuck the EU."
Of course, the sanctions backfired, pushing up the price of energy, destroying EU/UK economies, accelerating the economic shift in focus to Asia, and creating a fertile breeding ground for rising fascism across Europe 👏👏👏
The answer to what was Europe doing? They were pretending it wasn't happening. /Vazis were bombing their own people in Europe and the Europe pretended it wasn't happening. You could watch it in real time on the internet. But it wan't officially happening
Energy companies should belong to the state, I mean to the people!!
Nothing else to say.
Well I have to add: this was my belief 35 years ago and still is ... actually every year that passes I am even more convinced ...
The same of course refers to water (as it still is the case in many countries fortunatelly): the state, we the people have to be the owners.
And than we, the people, will see, to which insustries and to what prices we will sell energy and water.
Because we cannot go to the woods for wood or the the moutains for water.
This is not communism this logical thinking.
We the people have to determine the free market ... not the other way round.
Funny how when privatised there is always this everything will be better. But water pipes leak more, substations don't work, and the internet is messed up. Back to basics indeed, however, now the grubby hands control "what YOU need" that sweaty grip ain't gonna relax, they worked oh so hard lobbying for laws, taking subsidies, and taking % agent deals, to give up on Utility control.
So when Russia begged to sell gas or oil on long term contracts at very low prices we told them NO and made sure everyone paid very high prices on the "free market"
the russians tore up the long term contracts. thats the issue.

By Russian occupied territories she meant "unoccupied" territories. Ukraine attacked largely unoccupied/undefended land for optics / media blitz. Very much like a boxer ignoring his opponent and shadow boxing in a corner.
Ontario Hydro (electricity, we used to rely on "hydro" generation). It is natural for a societies infrastructure to be state owned. Here in Ontario Canada our water & electricity are state managed, owned, non-profit.
Back in Pierre Trudeau days he started a state owned fuel company - PETRO Canada. I thought it was an interesting idea - it still exists (Suncor) but did not take hold as advertised at the time.
Telephone was state owned (Bell) until recently as cell phones took over. Yellow pages too.
It is somewhat surprising to me that some countries have privatized (monopoly) systems for water & electricity.
@ peter greenwood. Electricite de France and the CEGB (UK) were public enterprises that did an oustanding job in providing the public with reasonably priced electricity while advancing the technical knowledge and development of the power industry.
In the US, the Tennessee Valley Authority did extraordinary work in order to help rural electrification develop and extend its service while perfecting remarkable hardware suited for long distances in difficult areas.
Enter privatisation and greed and the rest is history
You will never know how much more you were paying to keep it state-owned. My guess, at least 10%. What would be the downside of saving that money for something else?
Bell Canada lost it's monopoly before cell phones, actually. I remember a few small carriers that used Bell's lines but you could dial a few digits first to connect to the alternate carrier on your land line to access cheaper rates, especially long-distance rates. At that time also, you didn't have to rent your landline phone from Bell anymore, but could buy a phone from a store such as Zellers or Shoppers Drug Mart. I remember them being quite stylish and some came in bright colours.
@@SharonPiano8 Bottom line must always be: is the public getting a better service from a privatized company?
Anything you privatize, will have board members who want to make a profit. In the US, we used to have a somewhat ethical healthcare that became privatized. Now, hospitals compete for the Forbes list, CEO's make over a million in salary minus the bonuses from pharma ; the patients are clients and the employees are associates. Insurance companies have raised premiums to the roof, but still cannot pay for everything. Hospitals have a huge mark up so the average person cannot afford healthcare, without going into a hole. Homelessness is next. People who had to sell their homes, to pay their hospital bills are now wishing they had just died. That is our current state of affairs. Tragic.

It’s fascinating to see a Greek socialist feeling compelled to demonstrate “a healthy dose of Russophobia” just to appear to be on “the right side of history.”
Also interesting to see how unaware he is of the ways the energy markets work in California, which he chose to bring up to make his point. In CA, PG&E gets its total energy from a variety of sources, including such renewables as wind and solar, and mixes them into one basket, so to speak. Yes, ultimately, the end user has only PG&E as the energy provider for both the gas and electricity, but upstream there are several suppliers.

Actually this is the beginning of the end for the Russian monopoly on european gas. This is what you and other krembots don't seem to get.
There's a Greek quote that's apt for the critical EU situation. It's in Thucydides, where he makes Pericles sound rather like Hitler ("It's because your resolution is weak that my policy seems to be mistaken").
Pericles died in a plague and Athens lost.
Varoufakis didn't mention the insanity of the Ukraine, European and Americans in demanding unconditional surrender from Russia. Strange how he left that out when he mentioned the tragedy of the war.
Western Europe made no mistake by getting cheap gas supplies from Russia. That made complete economic sense. The mistake it made was to join, with such enthusiasm and dedication, the all encompassing sanctions on Russia. That is not just an economic mistake, but of everything.

Sorry, Yanis here speaks as a politician and not as sincere member of the public. Yanis is very clever, well educated with wide views on many issues personality. He should be well informed as a person and politician and therefore should understand the nitty gritty of the situation better than the rest of population. He showed on numerous occasions ability to think independently. But he has chosen in this interview not to show what he really is able. I would be surprised if he was not able to grasp that roots of the conflict in Ukraine are not only in Russia's attempt to assert itself even not as a world but as a regional power. But conflict arouse mostly in the persistent existence of NATO which outlived its purpose for creation with the collapse of USSR. NATO was created at least on paper against USSR's presumed threat in order to deter it. There were straightforward signs shown by Russia since the USSR collapse that Russia will not tolerate expansion of NATO in its borders direction. The resistance to this expansion was expressed by every leader of Russia including late president Michael Gorbachev and his foe and successor late president Boris Yeltsin and then by current president of Russia Putin as well as his predecessor president Dmitri Medvedev. Europe population will suffer but much less than population of Ukraine which because its corrupt leadership which has not had an overwhelming support of its whole population just before this war (roughly 30% supported it at the most) was used by elite of USA to advance its claim for hegemony in unipolar world by taming Russia's state leadership ambitions for regional influence. History of Russia and Ukraine which the latter gained statehood only in just over 3 decades ago spans over millennium. Both have roots in Kievan Rus. But as a result of more than 350 years of majority of people living within either Russian empire or USSR there are many even closer bonds of population of 2 countries with large number interethnic marriages of the residents of these 2 modern countries.
US elite decided to exert its influence on both on Ukraine and Russia, but in a differing way. Now the population of the whole population of Ukraine is suffering as a result of inability of the 2 countries to find peaceful solution for the life of the torn apart population of Ukraine, because of unwise decisions of the leadership of the Ukraine under the influence of the US leadership which aims to use Ukraine to "destroy" Russia in one way or another. Russia has rebelled after it gave the first clear warning that situation of NATO expansion is utterly unacceptable in 2007. It then has annexed Crimea after the US backed coupe in Kiev which led for legitimate president of Ukraine to flee in 2014. In this it has defended its historical claim for the area which was part of it since 1783 till the 1954 when Nikita Khrushchev then leader of USSR which included Ukraine decided to hand over Crimea for administrative purposes to Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic on 300 years anniversary of unification (it was unification in its true sense) of Ukrainian territories with Russian Empire. Crimea has importance in many ways to Russians. They bled a lot to defend it numerous wars. But it has strategic importance because of the superb naval base in a Back Sea which was used by Russian Empire followed by USSR to secure its southern borders from invaders. Ukraine's leadership took hostile attitude towards Russian speaking population of the Eastern Ukraine which is much closer affiliated with Russia than the rest of the country's population. Both sides taken arms in their hands and were in conflict since 2014. The rest of the world ignored the situation till the disastrous war erupted this year. But this war is between the Russia and NATO which uses Ukraine as a proxy providing manpower for the direct fight using NATO and allies supplied weapons against adversary.
On Russian gas: Our dependence on Putin has not been the problem, but our lack of independence from the US. The US has been sanctioning Nord Stream 2 FOR YEARS, and now we are suffering the consequences of your eastward NATO expansion and your proxy war with Russia on European territory.
On 7th Feb. Biden said pipe 2 would not come on Shultz was there when he said it on tv interview just the same as he said putin had to be removed from power.

Explain "energy derivatives" on oil and gas supplies, various
"gambles" on corporate arrangements of supplies suddenly not arriving.
A contract for an energy product is sold on the futures market. Due to actual physical situations (like a pipeline not working or insufficient shipping or storage available), the original seller of the contract cannot actually deliver the product on the date specified in the contract, this is the failure in the corporate agreement.
The gamble comes from the market itself: contracts are bought and sold by traders (people or corps) who are betting on the price to change in one direction or another and they expect to exit their position before they have to either take actual physical delivery or deliver the product.
In a a market, their are traders who never want to be involved with the physical product and (as described bove) they take their profit or loss before the contract comes to term. There are also consumers and producers who actually want to either take physical delivery or physically deliver a product.
Energy derivatives are the futures contracts which are traded on the exchange. They have standard quantities and delivery dates, so they can be exchanged with each other (if you enter a sell position and then later enter a buy position on the same contract, you are no longer in the market (and the other way around too)).
When too many actors hold contracts that they cannot fill (deliver or take delivery on) after the settlement date, the market starts to become unstable.
