I have to agree with this assessment of US foreign policy. It's just not really a policy but to my simple mind just the continuation of the superiority complex of of the English speaking peoples which was so against my religious beliefs. I saw it and heard in Vietnam, in the invasion of Granada, in the refusal to accept other people choosing a form of government and an economic approach that was of their view of how it was best for them to pursue. It seems that "...life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness..." was written for only the American people and of those Americans that were truly American. As a former diplomat and a postgraduate in international relations and EU institutions I can fully corroborate what Professor Sachs is saying.
I too have a background in international political science and have been following the evolution of this conflict since the violent, U.S. sponsored coup in 2014. I fully agree with Professor Sachs. By the way, Democracy now was very slow to understand what is really going on in this conflict.

The USA knows very well that we could change to a more cooperative system, but that would undermine their power. That's why they spend so much on the military, they will (try to) destroy everything that could compete with them, even if it's by force.

I am an American who retired and spent the past year traveling to different countries. It slowly dawned on me that as Americans we are so violent, so ready to fight and kill each other. I did not see this in other countries. People were calm, they were friendly, and patient. I did not see them arguing and fighting the way I see people fighting in America constantly. Not that people in other countries do not fight, but in the past year of my travels abroad it was very rare to see whereas in America it is very common. We are extremely prone to violence.

I am also retired, lived throughout Europe for 9 years and been to 43 countries. I think you make a good point. However, in my opinion, a little overstated. As for other countries There are many 3rd countries who are largely lawless territories (northern Mexico, Guatemala, much of Colombia and Venzuela, Parts of central Africa, Afgahanistan). Other countries are terrible dictatorships where few would choose to live (N. Korea, Cuba, Saudi Arabia ). As for American's reputation vs others, I know many Europeans and Asians who visit and find Americans to be very friendly and peaceful. All that said, there is some truth to what you say.
