  • Teach your puppy sit, down and stand! I use a clicker to engage my puppies in fun positive reinforced training. A clicker helps in the beginning to establish learning and marking behaviors in a timely and quick manner that promises food for each specific click. I teach all my puppies these behaviors and when they have them down, I add a "wait" command and have them do "push-ups" before they get to eat each meal. It is a great way to add motivation and fun to your training. Notice I only work him for 5 or so minutes and then we take a break. We do this a couple times a day and in no time he understands these commands and the clicker can be reduced!

Thanks for this simple puppy exercise. I'm going to try it with my new BMD this spring.

Currently working with my 9 week old Berner and trying to work on puppy pushups but my pup seemingly isn't all that motivated by food. She will want it if it's right in her nose but quickly loses interest and would rather roll on her back, go try to eat my plants, etc. I'm working with string cheese currently. This pup seems set on getting that food, have you experienced working with a puppy that doesn't seem as enthusiastic about treats?
When it does seem shes a little interested I get maybe 3 minutes of training in before shes over it.

I would work with her kibble then, use what does motivate her. If she is excited at meal time, use that! If string cheese doesn't do it use something like chicken or steak pieces.

Hi there, this is a question well ahead of the reality of raising a little Better. Love your process, building communication. Wondering if their attention to you, behaviors, or commands, gets weaned off the treats. Do most behaviors or responses to commands become a baseline sort of ettiquette? Acknowledging that training is for life, part of play, communicating. Thank you!

When I compete with my dogs they don't get food in the ring (except conformation), they know the behaviors and can perform without food, but will continue working for me because they get a reward/paid. So, when I am training there are times I give a treat only at the end of an exercise, but I always pay them. That way when I do ask them to do it without food, they know I will pay them when we are done. I wouldn't expect a dog to do something for me over and over without anything in it for them. However, I generally don't reward my dog for "sit" as that is so easy. On occasion I do, but mostly we are getting ready for another activity.

I am in the Pacific Northwest, I do breed and raise Bernese Mountain Dogs, I don't have a website since I only breed every few years. I am happy to help you find reputable and responsible health conscious breeders in your area if you like?
