I just want to say thank you for this upload. I’ve been looking for years on the AKC with no luck for a reputable breeder in my area. After trying the Club of America search, I found a reputable breeder of 34 years and am now on a waitlist!! Thank you thank you! Years of searching finally!
This is great! I've been in dogs for over 20 years and am now looking for a new pup (A Berner!) and it is surprising to me how many people won't answer questions, get upset when I say I don't want to just send a deposit and want to see clearances. I bred many years ago and was always more than happy to help inquirers with any and all questions and was there for the lifetime of any puppies I had/their new owners. It's hard out here nowadays to even get an email back and I'm an experienced owner/breeder/exhibitor.
This is an excellent intro to the buying of the Bernese Mountain Dog. Highly appreciated. This particular breed has been my favourite for years, and your dogs are so beautiful that I can't stop looking at either of them in this video. Love at first sight😍
Thank you for this!!! It’s an aspect of getting a puppy (I’m beginning he process of getting a service dog) that a lot of people don’t think about but it’s important to let them know you know your stuff!!
I think Deuce is exquisite! His head is gorgeous, I couldn’t take my eyes off of him, I love how they nudge you with their paw. My Bernese did that all the time too. The best breed of dogs, and I miss mine, you’re such a good mom to them. I want another but I’m waiting for things to slow down so I can commit more time with a new puppy and going forward. I know how they need to be with their owners. Maybe someday I might be on your list. 😊
Thank you so much. Nice to hear what the expectations are from an actual breeder. I am talking to a breeder tonight about an upcoming litter and I'm soo nervous. It's clear she is an excellent breeder and truly cares about what she does. I don't want to mess this up!
You will do fine. Just be yourself, be honest and ask her questions about her dogs, if she does anything with them, their health, what she sees runs in her lines and what her expectations are of her puppy homes :) Good luck!
@@SitStaywithStacySlade wow thank you from the bottom of my heart. I read your comment right before I talked to her and I think the call went really well.
thnx for the video. We are getting a bernese in about 7 weeks. and yes, through a sertified breeder. and a mail dog as well. been over this for a long time. thnx for the tips. MADELAINE677 The question I would ask is why? If they won’t share and be honest, why would you pay thousands of dollars for something they won’t tell you much about? As a buyer, it is your right to know the health behind your puppy.
Thanks for all your videos. I love them. You share a lot of useful information. I would only suggest to improve the audio quality... It sounds like if you were too far away from the mic. Thanks again for sharing.
This has been very informative. I have always wanted a Berner but, I backed off a bit when I researched the health issues. We adopted a ten year old (now eleven and a half) Golden but, I'm still researching Berners. This is encouraging because there ARE breeders out there trying to preserve the breed and now I don't feel so discouraged. I will wait for the right breeder and right puppy.
Yes, there are quite a few breeders who are breeding for health, but there are twice as many just breeding to make money with no regard for the health of the dogs they are producing. We are lucky with Bernergarde.org that you can research it for yourself and verify!
if I may be so bold; I agree there are far too many people who mate dogs (refuse to call them breeders ~ 'mills' is appropriate). I'd recommend finding a breeder, building a relationship with that kennel then waiting for the right time/puppy.
@@yukonica4560 All but, one of my dogs have been rescues. I worked with a breeder when we got our Old English Sheepdog years ago. It took me almost three years to get one of her pups but, being a stellar breeder she just didn't churn out pups all the time. Not only did she vet prospective owners of her pups but, she created relationships with all of us. The problem comes when people say they want a good breeder for their new puppy but, they are not willing to wait and so jump on the "I need a puppy now." bandwagon.
@@rca6576 good things for those who wait.... We began with good intentions but not understanding what Stacy is teaching here. We 'wanted a puppy asap'. Let's say it didn't work out too well. Gosh your videos are so helpful I’m so grateful to you Stacy. I’ve owned dogs before but I was either a child when we got them, or we got rescues so had no way of ‘stacking the cards’ as you’ve put it so I’ve never learned what to look for. I am curious about temperament indicators, when meeting a breeders dog, what are behaviours to look out for as good and what are ones that are bad? Are there any specific BMD behaviours we should look for? How do you identify something is a temperament behaviour vs learned behaviour that either may not be passed on in the weeks your puppy is with a breeder or I personally may choose to train differently? Also bonus question (sorry I’m asking so much) how long should a puppy stay with the breeders, I know 8 weeks is the minimum my countries kennel club will recommend/allow but I also know some breeders will hold them until up to 12 weeks. How does this affect development and what are some of the pros/cons of longer vs shorter? (Or some trusty resources I could read so you don’t have to spend your precious time typing a long response to my silly questions)
I would want the puppy to go to their new home between 8-10 weeks. When seeing the mom and maybe the dad, you want to see a confident dog who enjoys being with their owners and their puppies.
Thank you for posting this excellent informative video. We are considering getting a miniature poodle sometime in the near future. Other than AKC breeders in my area, what other resources would you suggest to search for a reputable breeder of this type of dog? Appreciate your information and your dogs are very beautiful
I would go to dog shows to meet the mini poodle breeders. I would also look for regional breed clubs where you can learn of local breeders and meet folks.
Thanks for providing such useful information. I've been wanting a dog for a while but was worry about finding a good breeder that provide a healthy puppy. I saw a website for Biewer Terrier. The website look great but there some some alarm going off for me. Why does this breeder have a lot puppies available. I will keep what you say in mind and hopefully find a good dog. Thanks again!
Good luck! Ask a lot of questions and learn what the best in class breeding practices are for the breed. Check out any national club for a breed and go from there!
what would you recommend to do when introducing a new puppy to a current dog? I get my berner puppy in two weeks and I’m a bit nervous because my current dog is a bit skittish and doesn’t really warm up to dogs until he’s spent some time with them. I’m so excited to go get my puppy! Plus he was born on my birthday which is really cool. Thanks for a great video!!
to be fair most email programs auto-correct to "Burmese." Hahaha. Also not all breeders are nice. If someone is nasty to you don't give up. Maybe that kennel just wasn't a good fit. It took our family awhile to find our dog. Best of luck out there.
Ryan Albertson Oh man, I’m sorry someone was nasty to you! There is never an excuse for that! Hello Stacy, I have a question and a short story about how I got my BMD. I was on my way to hopefully getting a BMD that needed to be rehomed. He was given to another family. I was sad so my daughter found a puppy on line at Pawpaw puppy tales breeder. Great we just traveled through Pawpaw. We met the breeder who said she was acting as a broker for the breeder. I asked about hip guarantee and she said there were no guarantee because much of it was environmental elements. I decided to get the puppy anyway. I have no health information. I only know that she is akc registered. And have sire and dams name and akc identifier. I am worried about her possible health issues. How can I find out about this? Would getting a DNA test help? I love her and will keep her forever rega
Most informative Stacy. In one of your previous videos a recommendation to check bernergarde.org was mentioned. The breeder we are buying from had updates through Nov 2018 (now March 2020). They had two litters in 2019 but neither appeared at Bernergarde. That question was posed today. The breeder did ask for a $200 deposit in advance 'and' before a litter was produced. I did wonder about this and we do respect the reason for the breeder doing so. This obviously implies the buyer is serious and perhaps they've been burned with broken promises. I did obtain in writing a full refund would be awarded if the breeder cannot produce a puppy. In your video above you recommend to ask what are the hip and elbow clearances and also what are the hip and elbow clearances on the male that bred the puppy. Might you be able to you extrapolate in text here as a reply or as a detailed video if possible? We're not truly clear as to what good numbers are and how to apply those measurements. Many thanks.
Great questions! I still would caution you against placing a deposit until you know sire and dam of the litter so you can make the educated choice of the health of the pedigree you will be buying. All puppies are not created equal, even from the same breeder. In regard to clearances, I will work on doing a video on what health clearances you are looking for and how to find them. In Bernergarde, the mother and father of any litter you are considering has to have listed under the "certifications" tab Hips: fair to Excellent, Elbows: Normal, Heart: Normal, Eyes: Normal (some small cataracts are not heritable) DM(sod1a and sod1b): tested, the results matter depending on who they are bred to to reduce risk. I also want to see a history of health clearances behind each parent too. You can look up my name in BernerGarde for my dogs as examples. There are many great breeders who do these clearances, there are also MANY not great breeders who are not doing the bare minimum of these tests to ensure their puppy buyers get healthy puppies. If you are spending money for a puppy, you deserve to get a healthy one from a breeder working hard to preserve the breed! Happy to answer any questions!

Hi Stacey, we have chatted before... Roman my 14 week old Bernese, has all of a sudden decided not to eat his food that I have very diligently researched out good food for him, which he gulped down like no tomorrow and now all of a sudden he is being fussy. We have a compost pile he might of got into as he has had some diarrhea. I watch his stool to make sure it’d all good lol. Lately like last 3 days Ive been giving him some of his regular food mixed with rice and boiled hamburger, or even dress his regular food with broth, he eats maybe not all but most...have you experienced fussy eating with your Bernese?? I’m just not sure why all of a sudden he has stopped eating (yes I’m in touch with my vet) the way he was...this stuff just worries me like crazy, especially that he is a puppy!
It could be so many things, but they do ebb and flow in their eating habits due to growth, teething, hormones etc. What food are you feeding? How did you come up with this one to feed? I do use toppers and bone broth on my dogs food. I also mix different kibble proteins to keep them rotating through.
Hi Stacy, this is a great informational video. Your dogs are so cute and have good temperament. I really like the Burnese mountain dogs and I’m looking to buy one, but I’m doing all my research first. I live in Albany ,New York. Do you have any suggestions on breeders in my area? Thank you for any info you can provide. 😊
I would contact the regional club near you and get their list of reputable breeders. You want to find a breeder who uses Bernergarde.org and posts their dogs health clearances there. Here is the link to the regional club map. Each has a website for you. Hope this helps! (I would also look at PA too). www.bmdca.org/rcc/Regional_Clubs.php
I really appreciate the video and I'll definitely keep all your tips in mind! Also, what is your take on bulletin board websites such as puppyfind.com? For instance are these an automatic redflag since these puppies are not on the AKC marketplace?
Yes, generally they are a red flag. But breeders on the AKC marketplace have red flags too. I only suggest contacting your regional BMD club to get their list of reputable breeders. When in doubt I ALWAYS reference Bernergarde.org for the health certifications on any parents of a puppy. If they aren't listed where you are looking I would look elsewhere. Any reputable breeder who is breeding for health will list the parents and health clearances!
A reputable breeder should learn what activities you expect to do with your dog, where the dog will live, who will care for the dog, the type of house, fenced in yard, if you will adhere to a limited vaccine protocol, what your plans are for your dog, do you have training lined up and also a reputable breeder will want/require you to stay in touch through the life of the puppy...for starters.
Some of the best puppies/dogs could possibly come from the pound. And, you may not even know what breed they are or how they are bred. Nobody that breeds puppies can say that they breed puppies with perfect temperaments. You can't determine if your puppies will be better than one that come from a home litter, pound or a mill.
Yes, I can say my dogs are bred with health and temperament as a priority. I take great measures to breed dogs with good temperaments from the breeding dogs I select to how I raise my puppies. I also know that I do extensive testing phenotypic and genotypic to ensure I am making good breeding decisions. I support my puppies throughout their life and am there for their families 100% of anything they need from me.
Have you checked out the BMDCA.org breeder referral? I would also look at their regional club list for reputable breeders. Also verify Bernergarde.org for health clearances.
Hello! I am looking into buying a husky from a. Breeder but he is asking for payment and THEN he will draw up the paparrwork for proof of ownership With his lawyer. Is this normal??? The puppy is registered but I’ve never heard of getting a lawyer and not being able to see the paperwork before??
@@SitStaywithStacySlade My partner and I just fell for this (that’s why I’m now looking at videos like yours right now). We put a deposit down for a dachshund when we got off the waitlist when our puppy was born. Before we did I asked the breeder about the contract, then asked again after paying, mentioned it again a month later, and then finally asked again two weeks before our pick-up date. She took 2 days to send it over and when we read it we found it to be unclear and inconsistent. We made some comments and suggestions and wrote a nice email back saying we were open to discussion. She called us today, 6 days before we were going to pick up our puppy, and angrily told us we could no longer work with her and would not budge on anything about her contract. Now in hindsight I’m seeing so many red flags and mistakes we made.
I had a great experience with my first breeder but I recently put a deposit with a different breeder and the contact has been very little! The breeding wont happen until Spring so I'm assuming there isn't much to talk about but some communication would be great!
@@SitStaywithStacySlade For us there is no reason for deposits. By the time a puppy is available for a person; we know each other well. They are committing to joining a community based on our dogs being part of their family. Our puppies are not a commodity. They are a commitment.
No reputable breeder would abandon their dogs! Puppy mills and backyard breeders are the scourge of this behavior! Now, a reputable breeder might find a great family home where a retired dog can be a beloved pet and be the one and only dog. But we would NEVER abandon a dog!
I would suggest finding a pure breed dog, maybe a Maltese or a Poodle, and reach out the your regional breed club to find reputable breeders. Reputable breeders are not found breeding mixed breeds. Or go to your local shelter.
@@SitStaywithStacySlade ..i asked if i could give the deposit in person and also see the dog n then rest of the payment on friday n take the puppy home..he refused
@@cynthiamarie136 You are better off that way. I would contact your regional BMD club and learn to navigate Bernergarde.org to verify health certifications on any parents of puppies.
Trish Salzl so the temperament test is typically done be the breeder at 7 weeks old. A reputable breeder will know their how their puppies temperaments will match up with their puppy buyers because they have extensively interviewed each person.

Please tell me where I can find or contact you!
You can email me or you can also find me on Facebook :)
Thank u
Another great video Stacy!
Hey, I find your video is super informative. Do you breed more hypoallergenic dogs too?
I only breed Bernese Mountain Dogs. For a dog who doesn't shed I would recommend the Portuguese Water Dog, Havanese, Standard Poodle or Airedale.
What is a “burner card”? I can’t tell if that’s what you are saying.
Bernergarde.org, it is the Bernese Health Database
I really appreciate the video and I'll definitely keep all your tips in mind! Also, what is your take on bulletin board websites such as puppyfind.com? For instance are these an automatic redflag since these puppies are not on the AKC marketplace?
Yes, generally they are a red flag. But breeders on the AKC marketplace have red flags too. I only suggest contacting your regional BMD club to get their list of reputable breeders. When in doubt I ALWAYS reference Bernergarde.org for the health certifications on any parents of a puppy. If they aren't listed where you are looking I would look elsewhere. Any reputable breeder who is breeding for health will list the parents and health clearances!
just a heads up your volume a little low .
Yes, thank you. I purchased a microphone since that video :)
What about the other way around what can u exspect your breeder to ask you if you have never been to a breeder before. ?
A reputable breeder should learn what activities you expect to do with your dog, where the dog will live, who will care for the dog, the type of house, fenced in yard, if you will adhere to a limited vaccine protocol, what your plans are for your dog, do you have training lined up and also a reputable breeder will want/require you to stay in touch through the life of the puppy...for starters.
@@SitStaywithStacySlade thank you for answering :-) my qustion.
❤ love it
Some of the best puppies/dogs could possibly come from the pound.
I am looking for a puppy i have never ever had one and i cannot find a good webstie ):
Have you checked out the BMDCA.org breeder referral? I would also look at their regional club list for reputable breeders. Also verify Bernergarde.org for health clearances.
@@SitStaywithStacySlade Thank You (:
Hello! I am looking into buying a husky from a. Breeder but he is asking for payment and THEN he will draw up the paparrwork for proof of ownership With his lawyer. Is this normal??? The puppy is registered but I’ve never heard of getting a lawyer and not being able to see the paperwork before??
Nope. I would not give any money without a contract to read over and sign. Sounds like a scam to me.
Honestly, a reputable breeder won’t take a deposit until they have puppies to sell. Do their dogs have their health clearances on Bernergarde.org?
@@SitStaywithStacySlade its a English Mastiff Breeder!
@@mrrandom8050 Mastiffs need to be health tested as well. The same information applies. www.mastiff.org/breeder-referral/
@@SitStaywithStacySlade For us there is no reason for deposits. By the time a puppy is available for a person; we know each other well. They are committing to joining a community based on our dogs being part of their family. Our puppies are not a commodity. They are a commitment.
Why do you pay for cesarean sections for healthy dogs? Isn't a need for that something that should be bred away?
Because when she is only carrying one puppy it is safer for mom and puppy to do a c-section.
why do breeder abandon them when they are senior dogs or they cant produce no more puppies 😢😢
No reputable breeder would abandon their dogs! Puppy mills and backyard breeders are the scourge of this behavior! Now, a reputable breeder might find a great family home where a retired dog can be a beloved pet and be the one and only dog. But we would NEVER abandon a dog!
Do you think raising a Berner in New Orleans is doable?
I am sure someone does it, but you have to have AC and commit to getting up early and walking/exercising when it is cool in the morning and evening.
your a sweet heart
I am looking for maltipoo all’s I am finding is scammers! Any suggestions
I would suggest finding a pure breed dog, maybe a Maltese or a Poodle, and reach out the your regional breed club to find reputable breeders. Reputable breeders are not found breeding mixed breeds. Or go to your local shelter.
Thank you

I have someone asking for a deposit n to transfer my name to thr dog contract
N i pay the rest when i go pick the dog up
Does this sound right ?
If the puppy is born and you are placing a deposit to confirm you are taking that puppy, yes.
@@SitStaywithStacySlade ..i asked if i could give the deposit in person and also see the dog n then rest of the payment on friday n take the puppy home..he refused
@@cynthiamarie136 I would be very Leary then. Easily could be a scam.
@@SitStaywithStacySlade
Tha.k u so much i declined
Ill take my time for the right one for our family no rush on a new family member :)
@@cynthiamarie136 You are better off that way. I would contact your regional BMD club and learn to navigate Bernergarde.org to verify health certifications on any parents of puppies.
is it okay to do the puppy test when your getting a puppy
Are you referring to the temperament test? If so, it really needs to be performed in a neutral location by people who are new to the puppies.
yes i think it would help to see if it was a good puppy for me. do many people ask to do the test. i guess its like a personality test for the puppy.
Trish Salzl so the temperament test is typically done be the breeder at 7 weeks old. A reputable breeder will know their how their puppies temperaments will match up with their puppy buyers because they have extensively interviewed each person.
@@SitStaywithStacySlade Well i really want a well adjusted dog because she will be a service dog for me.
@@trishsalzl944 I think it would be a good thing to go with a breeder who does temperament testing.
No volume,can't hear!
I have since fixed the issue, this was early on, please be kind. There is a second video that covers the same things with better volume.
