She was playing in the beginning, but the mood all changed
It's the mood changes that do it for me. There's haunting, despondence and depression followed by anger, when she really gets it off her chest. An unforgettable blues/metal performance of a rap classic. Kudos to Kasey Chambers. Probably one of the most classic covers ever.
Best cover ever. She brought the emotion to the lyrics. She ripped it up and owns the song.

Kasey's got some 12 albums under her belt as has been inducted into the Australia Recording industry's Hall of Fame.
If you want to hear her 'normal stuff', I'd recommend 'Aint No Little Girl'. As with most Aussie artists, live performances will be best - so I'd recommend the one from 'Bluegrass Underground'. @@KoalityReactions

As an Aussie of course we love Kasey. But damn she knocked this one out of the park!!! And I am sure what she did to that Banjo is against the Law.

She used to be married to - and perform with - Shane Nicholson, but they divorced a while back.
She’s amazing, I sort of get Chinchilla vibes listening to her but in many ways different, both are very passionate and soulful but different styles. I liked the instrumentation, very nice with her singing finger picking the banjo. Then when things got more busy her country/blues roots became more apparent. I didn’t know anything about her but intend to find out more! 🌹

Kasey presented this performance as her life in song - as a journey. It starts with the soft plead of uncertainty highlighting a lack of confidence. Then the mood all changed to a cry of anguish and determination. Finally, after all the hard work comes tremendous acclamation and success. She lost herself and left her soul on stage, laid bare and battered. Unbelievable and brilliant. This was a deconstruction of Eminem's incredible artistry reassembled and made better.
Kasey is country music royalty in Australia, the youngest person to be inducted into the ARIA hall of fame. Her song The Captain was in an episode of the Sopranos. You should have a listen to her other stuff, especially Ain't no little girl or not pretty enough. ❤
I like how she sings this. Her voice still has thickness no matter where she is. I'm a sucker for that type of voice she has too.
Best cover I've ever seen! Notice the last part is sung in first person which is why it becomes so much more emotional. Kasey aranged this during lockdown and played it as an encore to her regular country music audience for the twentieth anniversary of the release of Ms Oscar winning song. Ms heard it and let her put it on Spotify. She made it her own!! Having recorded the audio and knowing they'd captured something special her management put out a call to anyone that filmed it to send their footage in and that's where the video comes from. Kasey is Country royalty here in Aus, but her style has a great deal of depth and breadth to it. She’s also a big Eminem fan, and worked on this version while in lockdown during the COVID pandemic. You might want to checkout some of her original material, like Ain’t No Little Girl and Not Pretty Enough (which was her first solo hit about 20 years ago).
By the way, the bloke on the left playing lap steel guitar is her dad. She started out as a kid playing in her dad’s band The Dead Ringers.
With Christmas coming up, may I recommend another outstanding Aus singer songwriter? Paul Kelly and his song How to Make Gravy (a live version, or the 2021 version). Officially, Dec 21 is How to Make Gravy Day in Aus, because of this song - you’ll understand why if you listen to it.

Around 2001 the song below was on released on to the radio's air-waves you'd hear it playing everywhere. It has a catchy chorus & the lyrics are super relatable,

Australia because of its relatively small population has a much smaller local audience and market for music in general, and each music genre in particular. Therefore general genres like country music in Australia tend to include some blues, bluegrass, folk, rock, and pop music within it's broad classification with intermingling, borrowing and merging of these different influences being quite common. Rap music influences may be a bit more unusual but both Rap and country music do have story telling as a core concept. Most of Kasey's other major music hits, and there are many from the Australian music charts, would not fit neatly into what most Americans would classify as country but are generally accepted as such in Australia, and Kasey over the years has performed at most of Australia's premier country music festivals at one time or another. She has even performed with another Australian who has achieved major success on American Country music charts, Keith Urban, who was backing her on guitar and vocals. This was when Keith was much younger and before he made it big in America.
This is better than the original in my view. I always thought that Eminem's original was great but this is simply incredible.

Newcastle is a regional town a coiple of hours north of Sydney. It has produced so much good music. Jimmy Barnes Silverchair etc etc. It's Australia's Nashville only a little rockier.

I liked the original, but for me, this is now /her/ song as she makes me /feel/ it so much more than Em did. Now whenever I hear the original, it feels insipid in comparison.

I don't know where you got country from. I'd say contemporary. She started out in her families country band,but has been expanding her horizons ever since going solo, more than 20 years ago.
I went ahead and subscribed in spite of the fact that you could be one of my exes twins... that problematic (she's a nice lady, I still like her) , but I'll get over it.

This was an interesting and creative rendition, Im not sure if I like it or it just needs to grow on me. She has a good voice and the band is good but I can stop comparing it to the original.
