Emerald feels like that awkward middle child of the 3rd Version Release lineup, like it knew it could have made more content and changes but it wanted to be too much like a mix of older siblings Ruby and Sapphire that it took the plot from them to blend into a fanfiction of sorts, add in combat additions a la Battle Tent/Tower and rematch calls because it likes play fighting so much, and then make these arbitrary encounter changes and availabilities "Just Because". And it's really rough for its placement among the other third versions when you have Platinum coming up in Gen4 to be the one kid that just naturally shows up all the others.
You said you would’ve changed the Pokémon in the egg you get given to Munchlax but it wasn’t available until gen 4 so not possible. I think the only baby introduced in gen 3 was Azuril so maybe that?

Both Gen 2 and Gen 3 had generational hardware gimmicks. For Crystal it was the mobile adapter, which never left Japan because nobody else had their weird insular mobile phone ecosystem. For Gen 3 it was the e-Reader, which was kind of a flop. This probably contributes to Crystal and Emerald feeling lacklustre. (I feel like fans overapply the idea of a "third version"-Yellow was created to onboard the large number of people who got into Pokemon as a result of the cartoon, not to produce a "definitive Gen 1 experience"; similarly, Crystal tied into the media emphasis on Unown, although the film opted for Entei rather than Suicune. Emerald and Platinum are the only ones which seem to have aimed for a definitive version of their respective plotlines, and they were created in very different circumstances; Emerald was a stopgap measure to buy time to develop Gen 4, and Platinum was a do-over since Diamond and Pearl have atrocious performance and some severe problems with game balance.) The thumbnail asks what about Emerald justifies having taken two years to make it; the answer is that it's a case of a lot happening under the hood for very little change to the presentation. Game Freak knew about the DS fairly early in the Gen 3 development cycle, so they did a bunch of plumbing work to abstract the engine created for Ruby and Sapphire from the GBA hardware. FireRed/LeafGreen was the first fruit of that labour, and then while continuing to develop Diamond and Pearl in the background they reimplemented Ruby and Sapphire on top of them to produce Emerald.

Emerald and Platinum are the only ones which seem to have aimed for a definitive version of their respective plotlines, and they were created in very different circumstances; Emerald was a stopgap measure to buy time to develop Gen 4, and Platinum was a do-over since Diamond and Pearl have atrocious performance and some severe problems with game balance.)
The thumbnail asks what about Emerald justifies having taken two years to make it; the answer is that it's a case of a lot happening under the hood for very little change to the presentation.

38:50 Prob because flamethrower has higher attack and is special, so not affected by intimidate. Also I think mighteyena has worse special defense than defense lol

I for one never had a problem with you benching your starters. I see the merits of each team you have built in these games and sometimes the starter simply isn't part of the equation. It's a perfectly fine way to play these games and you shouldn't mind those who take issue with it.
