      @@ji_mothyTbh, by not catching a second male Nidoran early and turn Nidorino into a very early Nidoking via the Moonstone you kinda wasted (you didn't keep the Pokemon you used it on in your team) is actually what will make speedrunners cry.
      If we talk about "playing how Gamefreak intended", they hand you an early male Nido and an early Moonstone and Nidoking with Earthquake, various moves for coverage and access to Horn Drill will just roflstomp the entire game. Since Nidoking got all that "intentionally", well, you know. But I 100% understand saying "we destroy everything with Nidoking, AGAIN" would make for an incredibly boring video.
      There is a video "Why is Nidoking used in Pokemon Red and Yellow speedruns?", if you're interested in learning more about that whole strat.

    • @EuroMIX2
      @EuroMIX2 6 місяців тому +13

      @@ThorsShadowAs a kid I never used the Nidos as I didn't know how good they were, and most stone evolutions stopped learning new moves, and Moon Stones were rare which discouraged me even further. I didn't realise that STAB and team variety didn't really matter as a Nido plus Starmie can learn almost every move you'd need. It doesn't help that older games punish you a little if you try to build a full team, especially without some grinding.

    Disable in Gen 1 actually selects a random move to disable, so Leer getting Disabled was actually pure chance. Great video! Loved it and greatly appreciate the effort you put into this.
    Edit: at 43:15 or so you mention using sturdy Normal Types to wall Psychic Types, such as Snorlax or Kanghaskhan. Kanghaskhan actually has very poor Special in Gen 1, so while it certainly can take Special hits due to its pretty good HP, it certainly isn't gonna tank them. Lickitung is very similar in that regard. Chansey, Wigglytuff, Snorlax and Clefable all have very high HP stats with good enough (or in Chansey's case just actually really good) Special that allows them to tank Special moves very well.

    Great video. After playing the games as an adult and then going on to play numerous romhacks of gen 1 running from low impact ones that include all mons to high impact ones that have a lot of homebrew and tinkering, I've come to understand the gameplay of gen 1 as more dragonquest than pokemon, if you feel me. Pokemon bills itself as a game about traveling, catching pokemon, and building a team, but it's so clear that the games are actually linear hero adventure stories. You're meant to catch, use, and bench your Pokemon as you progress, and adapt to a variety of unique challenges related to type interactions.
    Players often don't acknowledge it, but there are definitely boss pokemon and boss types explicitly put into the game to challenge you. Ghost, dragon, and psychic. Gengar, Dragonite, Alakazam. The devs knew that Alakazam was busted, which is why he is behind a trade, and given a first stage that literally does nothing. Gengar is poison because he's just too powerful as a pure ghost. And the dragon type is pretty self explanatory, they learn all the good moves, get dragon rage, and resist a lot of common stuff.

    Loved the vid as always Mothy. The team is wild. Never would have expected almost any of the picks. One side note, i believe at some point in the video you claim nidoqueen, a ground type, resists fire. While it's possible I don't have gen 1 type chart quite remembered, I'm pretty sure fire is neutral against ground. That said, really loved all the info provided, especially all the trades, as I largely had no clue how to take care of most of them, especially Lola

    Love the video, and I want to start off by saying I understand what you're trying to do. That said, I almost think a more appropriate name for this video/series would be "playing X as unintentionally intended". Personally, I think you're ascribing a ton of intention where there wasn't any.
    The reality is, there just wasn't a ton of intentionality behind game design decisions in the early days, it was more about flavor and world building. Porygon didn't serve any "purpose" besides just being a nod to those seemingly unobtainable prizes at arcades. Scyther and Pinser were just cool dudes, didn't matter if they couldn't learn a bug move. Tri-Attack was a move they made, and then it just so happens to work best on Cloyster.
    If there was an intended playthrough, it was supposed to be one of organic discovery. Which, in my mind, explains why it's so hard to parse out the "intended" gym order, or rather, the lack thereof. The middle section of the game feels disconnected because most first time players were going to miss an item here or there, so the game allows you to progress without 100% completion. Didn't find the bike? Well, you can get to Fuchsia. Found your into Saffron before getting the pokeflute? Well then, here's your next gym.
    Again, I understand what you're doing, and I love it! But I think ultimately these breadcrumbs you're finding are more random than it first appears.

I also love that you included chapters in the video (with funny names to boot) so I can refer back as I try out the team for myself. I saw you have a Stardew video as well, so my mom is gonna love that one.

    Great vid. There's a lot of these older RPGs that I think would be great for this series, due to the lack of clear and obvious hand holding. It often just means that the intended method is there, but hard to see without hindsight

    I love it. Such a creative twist on all the pokemon analysis videos i watch. This was a super interesting video and I got blue when i was kid bc i wasnt aware of which pokemon are useful/which ones i would grow to like. These days? Red. For one reason. Growlithe. I never pick Charmander im a squirtle guy and Arcanine is so cool and so much better than ninetails. At least for gen 1 its that simple for me in picking a version lol. Cant wait to watch more videos from you. A very great video. One thing i guess is this is choosing a version based on knowledge of the game beforehand to a decent level. Which typically i dont seek out
