@@chancegheno8096 Kinda sorta. It was just a qualifying run, so he wasn't racing against anyone, he was just trying to set a fast enough qualifying time in order to compete in the Top 16 field the next day. That being said, this very run even with the crash was still fast enough to qualify 13th (since the vehicle didn't explode until just after the finish line), and the next day a small memorial was dedicated to him in place of the race he would have ran.
My condolences goes out to Doug and his family members there rest in peace there Scott in from Victoria Australia here NHRA cheers from Cameron in Victoria Australia here guys
Being there that day was devastating to all in the stands and those in the entire NHRA family. My daughter, her first time at Raceway Park, and I we're sitting on that side on the track and could feel the concussion of that engine explosion from where we were sitting. As we left, they shut down the track after that, the ambulance carrying Scott passed by us. When we got back home we saw the news that he had died. It's strange I was there for Scotts first Pro race during the 1982 Summernationals and also his last in'08. :(
thank you for posting this. ESPN and NHRA have never aired the boom cam footage. and of all the other people who were there that day recording with their cameras and phones, no one else has ever really gotten footage of what the jumbotron was showing at the moment of impact...
If you want the true story check out the report from the New Jersey State Police, available online if you search under Kalitta Crash Investigation. They determined that the head gasket blew, which caused the body to buckle. When it came back down it hit the throttle return and held the throttle wide open. He was braking all he could but the engine was still driving the rear wheels. They said he was down to 125 mph when he hit the sand. The sand caused the car to pitch up and it sailed, glancing into the pole holding the net for the sand trap, then into the counter balance on a ESPN boom truck. If the ESPN crane had not been there he might have been ok.
I might be overstating the obvious, and I say this a lot of gear head knowledge, but at around 300’-400’ mark that car screamed past the redline like no other top fueler I’ve ever heard. I think his rev limiter failed and the rpms were stratospheric plus it was hooked up hard, so massive load on the engine, plus the clutch probably locked from the ultra high rpm and and heat and pressure, and it came apart the way you’d expect any V8 engine making 8,000hp would. I’m positive that the engine’s percussive effect would have knocked him out if not killed him right there. You saw how high it threw the body. He was in there with that explosion, with almost nothing in between. I heard the car went off the track over a concrete barrier near the end of the track and the boom lift was off to the side, not directly in the path of the track. It doesn’t matter. It would have been a miracle to survive that explosion. I know he’s in a suit and a cage and all of that. The air pressure plus shrapnel would be devastating, to say the least.
Andrew Higdon i believe what ur saying is right. .i was there that day...and yes that car was screaming like i never heard.. i will always remember my friend whitey.look at me saying to Omg...he is dead..after we seen the car explode we were on the pitside...so sad that day...
Unfortunately there has been alot of explosions that are just as bad if not worst and the driver was still fully conscious. Im pretty certain it was the rapid stop from 300 to 0 at the end of the track that did it , but what ever its all morbid speculation.

Thanks for posting. That's the first time I saw the jumbo screen footage since I was there. My eyes were glued to the screen and I remember thinking was this is not good. Little did I know at that time that he collided with the equipment used for the TV camera.
After watching the full close up footage, you can clearly see there wasn't enough shutdown area and a wall at the end of the track. If there had been a longer shutdown area and a sand trap at the end of the track Scott more than likely would be here with us today. God bless the Kallata Family.
Seems like common sense to not have a short track with a concrete wall at the end and a JLG Boom Lift sitting there. If they used a little common sense and had a extended out run area with sand he likely would still be alive.
@@br5747 there is (or was) a road at the end of the track. When they built Englishtown, I don't think they anticipated these monsters going as fast as they do now. I think they would have extended the track if it weren't for the road at the end. In any case, I miss Englishtown.
