    Great video about birds, Mark! The extra bit about what looks like a steam powered bird food launcher was also kinda interesting!

    I like the little bushing idea to hold the crank shaft while turning in the lathe. That's a good one.
    And I like the birds too.

      Thanks Michel. I always end up with a box full of bushes, fixtures and spigots at the end of a build like this but it sure makes life easier when you can hold the part without destroying it.

      Mark

    Brilliant, Mark. Thanks for letting us see this great project in progress. Wish I could give an extra thumbs up for the nature photography.

      I am glad you enjoy the wildlife shots. We sort of take it for granted but having travelled around Europe a bit I can tell you that it is rare to see a native bird. There are plenty of pigeons, ducks and sparrows but a lot of the countryside seems to be fairly empty of unusual species.

      Thanks. The flowers only lasted about a week on the tree but it was entertaining to watch the lorikeets from our kitchen window. Because they feed on the nectar in the flowers, heavy rain can wash all the nectar away and many nectar feeding birds will starve after such weather events. Luckily, it didn't come to that.

    Good morning, I am a beginner in the "lathe art", I have a small lathe Proxxon 250. I use for the construction of parts for my controlled radio planes, so I watch all your videos and with my notebook, I make a summary of all the precious tips you kindly bring us. Thank you for your generosity - Marcos from Londrina - Brazil

      Thanks Dean. We have had some weird weather. Torrential rain followed by heatwaves. Bushfires in the west and south. It's a heatwave here today so I am just hanging out in the study with the AC on.

    Impressed with the way you cut the tapered key way in the flywheel .You are correct those gib keys can be a bear to remove once they are hammered in, especially in the larger engines.

    • @Preso58
      @Preso58  2 місяці тому

      I was starting to think I had bitten off more than I could chew when I stated that I was going to fit a gib key. I may still regret it if it skews the flywheel on the shaft.

      I am finding it going together with way more precision than some of my earlier builds. Having a reliable DRO and the little touch probe is paying off big time.

    Having read your reply to another comment, I like the sound of a sandblasted brass insert to replace the “S” - that’ll look better than the original. 👍

      @Preso58  4 місяці тому +1

      I have already tried that process out on another Stuart Turner model and it is hard to distinguish between the CNC machined brass plate and the original cast one. Bead blasting is the key.

    I'm really enjoying the series Mark. Thoroughly entertaining and educational. I'm looking forward to seeing how you drill the hole at the far end of the steam chest. I ended up with mine about 10 thou out, and it just rubs. Not enough to be worth doing anything about, but I was annoyed with myself.

      Well, I can report that I finished that step a few days ago and in the end the solution was so simple that I felt dumb for not thinking of it earlier. That episode should be out in a week.

    Thank you Mark for the video. Great work on the model. Yes why the sideways S? All the would have to do is make the casting a little more square? Lovely flowers on the tree along with the birds.

    Good progress....that steam chest cover is for the 10V engine,they must have sent the wrong cover casting with that kit of castings.

    • @Preso58
      @Preso58  4 місяці тому +1

      Yes, that's certainly what happened. Given that it was purchased back in the mid 80"s, I don't think Stuart Models would be interested in sending me the correct one.

    Hi Mark, I just finished a 10v and had a cover that put the S sideways which would be correct for your 10h. So I think what happens is that the workers at the Stuart factory make mistakes and get the covers mixed up between the 10h and the 10v. If they made them all square it would not matter and would always work. Cheers from Canada!

    • @Preso58
      @Preso58  4 місяці тому +1

      That's what I was thinking too. No matter though. I have already worked out the "upgrade".

    • @howardosborne8647
      @howardosborne8647 4 місяці тому

      That is very likely what has happened. The cover Mark has is definitely the casting for a 10V engine.

    Your right that S sideways looks like crap!! Before pouring a new cover if me ill try a nice brass,,maybe a stainless steel or may buddy glass eye after he donst need it 😂😂😂😂😂 if all fails then pour a new cover,,, so far your model comeing along great

    • @Preso58
      @Preso58  4 місяці тому +1

      I can machine out the "S" and CNC machine a new one in brass. When it is bead blasted it looks like a brass casting. I think it will look better than the original.

  • @KarlGBergman
    @KarlGBergman 4 місяці тому

    Do you have dimensions for the corrected steam chest cover or an stl model of it? Small iron castings is something I do.

    • @Preso58
      @Preso58  4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks, but I am going to machine away the interior of the recess and CNC machine a new brass insert to replace it. I know that a complete cast iron cover would be ideal but I also know how much work is involved in making a one off casting. The brass insert will look nice and I have already tried it on another model and after bead blasting it's hard to tell that it was CNC machined. I do appreciate the offer though.
      Regards,
      Mark
