Monkeys, Sloths, and Macaws in Roatan with Carnival Cruiseline

Have you ever missed a shore excursion or flight?
We thought we had the timing down perfectly, arriving in Roatan on the Carnival Paradise, in order to play at a beach club before going on a ship excursion to see Monkeys, Sloths, and Macaws. The Ship runs on ship time, that includes embarkation, debarkation, and sailing times, but surely the Island runs on local time? That's what we thought and...
...we were wrong. We missed our shore excursion by an hour - what were we going to do now? The kids had been looking forward to this excursion since we had booked it months earlier. We couldn't let them down, it was Christmas Eve after all.
The solution was actually fairly simple, just beyond the gate of the cruise terminal on Roatan were local tour vendors, and they were at the ready with a car and a plan - we were able to get across the island and to the rescue sanctuary with time to spare. Though, we didn't get to sample the local delicacy of stewed Iguana...this time.
