    Great to see Pilsner Urquell finally get rid of the green bottles - the newer brown bottles could be darker, but a huge improvement nonetheless. This alone gives it the edge over the standard Budvar Pilsner, although the Budvar Dark is lush and usually more consistent.
    PU is devine on tap when visiting the Czech Rep. ❤️

    In my small-town shop you are not spoiled with choice, but Urquell is always available, almost always available in cans. It drinks great with lunch or dinner since it has enough intensity.
    Budvar is also always available. Never had any issues with canned version. Good alternative if you want something less intense, but still good.

    • @TheCrumbyBeard
      @TheCrumbyBeard  10 місяців тому

      Absolutely, and this is why I find it important to cover some more generic beers, because there are some good ones out there, and often that's all that's available so its worth knowing what's really going on at all levels of beer. Cheers!

    My palate has not embraced the strong bitter bite from Pilsner Urquell. Iconic beer. Phenomenal price. Must try and try again. But when I want a Czech beer, Budvar (Czechvar in the US) is the lager for me. Really enjoy Czechvar.

    If anyone were to write a book about Pilsner beer, Pilsener Urquell would have to be described as the Messiah of lagers: this beer is the founder of the religion, sorry, I meant the first of its kind, of course, and it's still the best in my opinion! I know the first of its kind is not always the best, but in this case I would sign it: I simply love this swill (in the best sense of the word)! Ironically, I also like pilsners of the opposite kind: Flensburger and Jever, which are among the bitterest and are quite hoppy. It always depends on the moment, the place, the mood and the situation.
    Enough rambling: many thanks for this great review!

    • @TheCrumbyBeard
      @TheCrumbyBeard  10 місяців тому +1

      Haha, as you know I always appreciate your input! And you're right, more credence should be given to the origin of the cold-conditioned beauty that is the lager! Cheers!

      @@TheCrumbyBeard But it wasn't that much input... It was more of a superficial ode to the Pilsen brew. But if you think it's good input, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you liking it!

    Love it. Bitter, nettles, grass. Very refreshing and crisp. One of my favourite beers and sold in Majestic just round the corner from me. I wonder why it has a relatively low ABV compared to other lagers like Budvar.

    • @TheCrumbyBeard

      NETTLES! That is the word I was hunting for! I don't see 4.4% as being low necessarily from a purchasing perspective, but you're right it is significantly less than Budvar at 5% in terms of units etc.

    I had a pint of Green Kings "Flint eye" dry hopped lager today, for the first time, albeit on draught.I found it surprisingly good! I'm going to be on a mission to get some cans and see what they are like! A new Lager and a homegrown one, that might be worth a review!?

    Been in Prague recently the unfiltered tap version of this is in a totally different league to stuff in bottles we get here, also had it in a half and half with kozel dark was amazing, but best beer I had over there though was from a monastery brewery, also try vinohradsky beers if you havent already easy enough to get but very high quality🍻

    Bought this beer for my dad on Father's Day. Personally I'm not a fan of the bitter taste at the end.I prefer Heineken. My dad really like this beer though. He said it reminded him of the beer he used to drink when he was a teen in the Soviet Union.

    We used this as the example of the Czech Premium Pale Lager style episode of my beer school. We were both surprised how buttery it is. I drink this fairly often and I've noticed the diacetyl levels have been going up the last few years. I don't know if it's just the export version we get or if its a worldwide issue.

    Here in the Czech Republic it is still sold in green bottles. PU is generally the best CZ beer from big "industrial" brewery. I´d rate it 7/10, which is very decent for this category. And reg Budvar, that´s mention below several times - it is just sweet piss, not worth trying (any beer produced by them).

    • @TheCrumbyBeard
      @TheCrumbyBeard  10 місяців тому

      I have to say I have a real soft spot for Budvar Dark, but the sweeter style suits a darker beer better anyway. Also it's worth noting that these things are relative to what else is available, Budvar may be poor compared to what you can easily get, but in terms of UK supermarket lager offerings, it is certainly one of the best (which tells you how poor the rest of it is!) Cheers!

    I always thought it was pronounced Urr KELL or Ur Qwell?

    • @TheCrumbyBeard
      @TheCrumbyBeard  8 місяців тому +1

      I think Urr KELL is probably correct - whilst I don't have an especially strong accent, in my area of the UK it is quite common to shorten some vowel sounds so that's probably what you're hearing.

      @@TheCrumbyBeard The first time I went to Czech Republic, I was traveling with my cousin. We decided to try some Czech beers before traveling, and were unimpressed. We were extremely pleasantly surprised by what we actually found in Czech Republic. There is a certain freshness that Pilsner Urquell in particular seems to lose much more quickly than other beers, though honestly I've only ever had the same feeling from beer actually served at the brewery with other brands. Pilsner Urquell has a unique distribution model within Czech Republic, with restaurants and bars having very large tanks that the beer is delivered by special delivery vehicles. That night have a lot to do with why it tastes so much better over there. :)
