One of the most incredibly versatile actors in the history of cinema. He WAS the centerpiece of any movie regardless of who his character was. RIP Hoffman.
One of the greatest of all time. His Capote performance is of a standard that few actors are furnished with the ability to attempt, let alone achieve. RIP brother.
i love him so much, despite all his amazing talent he was also so so handsome and such sweet and easy-to-go kind of person. cant pick my favourite movie of him, he just had so many incredible works, its a shame he didnt end up with so many awards for his work, cause he really deserved
This was such an emotional and respectful actor. I miss his take on different characters in film, because believe me, if he was still here he would be helping to shape what we see on screen. I miss you're take, you're attaindre, your particular take. Much respected actor that you forever will be.
A slow burn into our consciousness, then you waited for everything and anything he would touch, then gone!! He was born to do this. He was not supposed to die that way.
He's great!! I have seen great actors that would blow you away but they never made it. Never. Why? They were unbelievable. As good, if not better. Not disrespect meant. Really. Lots of reasons things dont happen for them. But they were incredible and I saw them, too.
To be a Hollywood actor you probably have to be a Freemason, do some sex stuff, be at the right parties, maybe murder a family member, etc. It’s not like sports where it’s based purely on talent.
I remember seeing PSH in many films but it was "Flawless" that made me sit up and say "Holy sh*t! Who IS this guy?". Became a confirmed fan then. What a superb actor he was. He burned so brightly and then he was gone. Heart breaking. Thanks for the upload.
Truly a one of a kind actor's actor. Whether the role is large or small, his range portraying widely different characters is staggering. Didn't even include Scent Of A Woman, State And Main, or Big Lebowski.
His performance in Owning Mahowney was brilliantly nuanced and understated-- and when he had to be intense he never appeared to overact. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead is another gem of his as well.
It’s one of those things where I didn’t know what I had until it was gone…but I will always remember the profound sadness that came over me when I heard the news of his passing. Missed. Thank You.
Two things this video prompted me to say; 1) people swoon over how good Nicholson, Pachino and Washington are, but they’ve no comparative range the way Phillip had. They’ve had good roles in certain movies to be sure, but they’re essentially just playing versions of themselves in everything they do. Phillip was a true chameleon, he disappeared into his character’s and gave them all such distinct personalities….he didn’t do phone-ins, he did performances. 2) Jessie Plemmons is the continuation of Phillips magic.
Excellent observation. I think your most accurate juxtaposition is Pacino. It’s very difficult to find a role in which he extends his range like Philip could. Washington, perhaps, reaches his parameters in Fences (2016), which explores the experience of one black family living in the era of segregation and the unfolding of the civil rights movement. His character, Troy, struggles with intergenerational trauma, bitterness, and the inherent trickle down effect of parents messing up their children, which results in those children subsequently messing up their children, and so on. Washington effectively portrays a flawed, weak individual, who eventually loses everything he fought over. I’d say this, in general, is a departure from the “normal” version of himself that you’ve referred to above. As for Nicholson, aside from a few naturally raunchy and inappropriate rom-coms, I’d argue that his range meets its maxim in About Schmidt (2002). Described by Roger Ebert as “essentially a portrait of a man without qualities, baffled by the emotions and needs of others. That Jack Nicholson makes this man so watchable is a tribute not only to his craft, but to his legend: Jack is so unlike Schmidt that his performance generates a certain awe.” Nicholson’s character, a widower named Warren, confronts the disinteresting meaning of life and the grim reality that he’ll soon be forgotten. Cathartic tears in the final scene represent a complete withdrawal from Nicholson’s normality. RIP Philip - The Chameleon
If there's one of the many roles by P.S.H. etched in memory, for me, it was his death scene in "Red Dragon." Brutal. His recorded screams heard off camera, the burnt corpse, etc.
to me, he's the kind of actor or just person you dont want to learn anything about to gain insight to his process and all that. when he is on screen, you just want to enjoy him work. to me, anyway.
3:32 this. this right here is why he's the best. The way he delivers this line is not very theatrical. It's not sexy. It's raw. It comes out as an outburst, which is what it is. I feel like most actors would have committed to hard to the line itself rather than "let it slip" like the way Philip did here.
"Promises were made!" "Not by me." "I've been with the company for 24 years. I was posted in Greece for 15. Papandreou wins that election if I don' t help DeHunta(?) take him prisoner. I've advised and armed the Hellenic army, I've neutralized champions of communism, I've spent the past THREE years learning FINNISH, which should come in handy here in Virginia, and I'm never ever sick at sea. Hanks was a real sport letting PSH have all the best lines.
I agree
I’m glad he’s gone actually.
He elevates every role and movie
That's my aunts brother
One of the best actors ever. Still makes me sad he's not with us anymore.
No Big Lebowski?? He was HILARIOUS in that role!!! Great talent. RIP PSH.
Exactly what I was thinking! Holy shit he had some range, a true actor.
Was hoping to see this, before the devil knows you're dead, and moneyball as well
Boogie nights?!
Probably the greatesr actor of his generation because of his versatility.
I think he would’ve loved this soft piano music over the “sharting” scene. Happy Birthday Phillip!
He is best actor of all time
I agree
Him, Joaquin phoenix and Daniel day lewis are the best.
@@yr5334 totally agree
Gary Oldman ...

I couldn't agree more
What would those awards mean exactly? He did win a best actor Oscar after all.
This was such an emotional and respectful actor. I miss his take on different characters in film, because believe me, if he was still here he would be helping to shape what we see on screen. I miss you're take, you're attaindre, your particular take. Much respected actor that you forever will be.
God damn I completely forgot about The Master, the outro to “slow boat to china” so haunting
Dear sweet Philip, for the most sensitive among us sometimes the noise is too much - Jim Carrey tweet upon Philip’s passing
Its rare that we see an actor perform with such heart on every project. Such warmth and humanity.
That scene in Mission Impossible. The best villain ever.
I didn’t like all his movies, but I always liked him in every movie he was in.
The music behind the Along Came Polly scene, somehow works.
He was like Donald Sutherland: He could play anything and make you believe he was that person. That's real acting.
I remember every time he came on screen in the Hunger Games series I'd just think "why can't the whole series be on this level?"
Donald Sutherland not great actor. But P. S. Hoffman is.
Yes but no. Donald Sutherland was not in PSH's class - not that I didn't enjoy his performances but one is an artist and the other is an artisan.
@@paulshawley6490 and what are you?
@@stephengrigg5988 mature.
He will forever be my Helsinki Station Chief.
One of those actors that can do anything on screen
The scenes between him and Meryl Streep in Doubt is maybe the best acting between two people I’ve ever seen. They were equals
Synechdoche, NY was truly remarkable!
My favourite movie. It’s so immense and PSH carries it with such grace.
His loss? Hit me to my core....and I could not give an abstract F%^K about fame/ celebrity ....but TALENT ??? hurts to lose
A slow burn into our consciousness, then you waited for everything and anything he would touch, then gone!! He was born to do this. He was not supposed to die that way.
Talent incomparable.
Great clip. The guy was up there with the best of them.
Great compilation. Missing Freddie Miles, though.

Absolutely spectacular actor gone way too soon, may he rest in peace.

Most people don't know the movie Love Liza .If you have not seen it DO IT NOW He was always disturbingly brilliant

He was a comet who only comes by every 100 years
Just saw an ad for the new twister remake and all I can think about was who's going to play Dusty!
PSH and PTA were f'n formidable.

PSH Literally Me Cinematic Universe
so great...in everything I ever saw him...RIP
His bit part in "Hard Eight" was one of his finest hours.
No dislikes. Perfect
Oh ya. I’d definitely join PSH’s cult

No clips from Happiness? That was his best role lol
I thought the same thing. Love Liza is missing as well.
My thought, too. That was the first movie where I took note of him, along with Boogie Nights.
Definitely not the greatest, but, even though he believes the opposite, one of the greatest
I love his act
Need some Love Liza in there

Greatest of all time is, of course, subjective. He's definitely top ten, maybe top five but Daniel Day Lewis comes out tops for me.
