It's a shame we won't Seymour Hoffman
Steve Em I feel bad for laughing.
Steve Em dammit i smiled
+Steve Em Fuck puns, seriously just stop. I'm not laughing because it's "funny" I'm laughing at how numb minded you are for thinking puns are "clever" and "funny". I mean seriously, Puns are the gross shit stain on comedy in general. It's a fucking joke compared to what stand up comedians come up with.
Are your jimmies rustled?
KCJan123 I just hate puns.
His acting was off the charts. Fabulous actor and he'll be missed.
In any role he did
You are so right. He's a legend.
really dropped the ball leaving out Synecdoche, New York.
Ooooh. Nice pull. forgot about that one. I also mentioned "Owning Mahowny" and "Love Liza"
Synecdoche New York is a masterpiece
That pissed me off, too.
Agreed. He was awesome/hilarious in Punch Drunk Love too.
Watchmojo thinks their still at 7:43 but in reality they’re already at 7:44
Watchmojo must've fallen asleep when they were making this list. Synecdoche, New York is his magnum opus. It is absolute perfection in an acting performance and deserves at least a spot in the top 3 - likely number 1.
They'll just have to make Another Top 10 list for his performances, or maybe several others, since he was wonderful in every movie he was in.
Hear hear! I was about to say the same thing until I read your comment!
Exactly man!!! synedoche newyork was the best from him! even better than his performance in capote
Should have been number 2 at the very least. Capote is a worthy number 1.
Kyle Stoughton One of the best movies ever in my opinion
an actor orson welles and marlon brando would have praised.
Tbh would have loved to see him play welles in a biopic
Patrick Black or an older marlon Brando
Yes, Orson Welles brought naturalism on screen, Brando commercialised it and Hoffman took it to another level.
Whenever, you see actors like Welles, Brando or Hoffman they always seem so natural.
Also a New York origin actor.
Twister - underrated supporting role...
DUSTY!
its the suck zone
It's sad to see a great actor taken away from us like this. He's one of the many actors that Heaven has gained. He will continue to make people smile, and laugh. R.I.P. Philip Seymour Hoffman.
@@chrisokeeffe3895 was just about to say that😂 " hey you guys!!!!! Whoooo!!!!!!"
I was actually expecting that to be at least #2. I think that's what introduced the world to PSH and damn if that wasn't a hell of an introduction.
His performance in Along Came Polly was amazing to me!! The boardroom scene makes me burst in laughter every time. RIP
I was just trying to remember the name if that movie. He has a film crew follow him around right?
Basketball scene
Bro I was just thinking that only a master actor could pull off that sh!t... Homey was A1.
The one guy who introduced us to the, shart. 😆
Crocodile tears!
Synecdoche, New York
One of his most underrated performances: Dusty in “Twister”. Hands down the best role in any disaster movie ever made.
I'll second that..... His performance in Twister put him on my radar as an actor to watch. And he NEVER disappointed.
I loved him in Twister. Pity this wasn’t mentioned. But it should have been.
My favorite was Dusty in Flawless. Shame they didn't mention this also.
That's intense...
Yeah, he was excellent in Twister. I remember when he tries to kiss the other driver's crew... hilarious and in Along Came Polly just unforgettable. Great actor R.I.P.
Synecdoche, New York... nuff said
I'm still mad...
Vin Kie to this day?
@@Vinkie me too... Me too
Yes
Never seen it.......I sure will now.
RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman (July 23, 1967 - February 2, 2014), aged 46
You will be remembered as a legend.
Not one mention of Synecdoche, New York. Wow...
its a rather odd film
@@AV-sl1wr agreed, charlie Kaufman is very overrated in my opinion.
one of the best I’ve seen
Since when was “odd” a bad thing?
@@AV-sl1wr it's a fucking masterpiece
Synecdoche New York is his best performance!!!
His performance in Flawless was nothing short of amazing. This should definitely have been mentioned. He was the best. Such a huge loss. So sad.
That's my favorite! He was flawless!
Agreed! I was shocked that movie didnt even make Honorable Mention. It is still one of my favorite movies!!
His performance as Allen in Happiness is underrated.
Michael Akkerman That movie is not nearly well known enough. It's exceptional.
That movie is so underrated
Totally agree. That was one of the first few films of his I've seen and I was taken by his performance. I had to see more of his acting because that role and that film was so fascinating and honest. I love his natural ability to fully embrace these questionable or completely horrible characters in such a way that while watching him you forget he's acting at all.
Michael Akkerman u
Happiness is underrated, too subversive for its time.
Where is Synecdoche, New York?? It should be in the top ten, yet it doesn't even get an honorable mention?
You acting like this list is definitive its not bro you could just as easily make your own top 10 hoffman performances
Ik think its his second best performance.
@@vinnycaprezzi4598 facts, second behind the master
One of the remarkable things about him was that he always stood out, no matter who was in the film, how great they were, or how big a role he had.
#8. Almost Famous- Oscar nominated roles were Kate Hudson and Frances McDormand, and Hoffman still stood out.
#7. The Talented Mr. Ripley- Jude Law and Matt Damon were the most critically praised, and he still stands out.
#6. Magnolia- This film had so many wonderful actors who all gave great performances (Tom Cruise, Jason Robards, William H. Macy, Julianne Moore, John C. Reilly). Cruise clearly stole the show in the film, Cruise was the only nominated actor for the film, and Hoffman still stands out.
#5. Charlie Wilson's War- Was the only actor nominated despite being in a film including Tom Hanks, Amy Adams, and Julia Roberts.
#4. Doubt- Clearly holds his own in the film with acting greats Meryl Streep and Amy Adams (all of which were Oscar nominated).
#3. Boogie Nights- Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore (both of which were nominated), Mark Whalberg, John C. Reilly, Don Cheadle, and William H. Macy were all in it, and he STILL stands out.
Honorable Mention: Scent of a Woman- Pretty small role in a film which won Al Pacino an Oscar and a Golden Globe nomination for Chris O'Donnell, and he STILL stands out.
Honorable Mention: The Big Lebowski- Stands out in a film that includes Jeff Bridges, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, John Goodman, John Turturro, and Sam Elliott.
Wonderful actor!
I wholeheartedly agree, He drew in and captured your attention.
In all of his roles. :)
"Do you agree with our list?"
Yes. Because he is a phenomenal actor gone way too early. RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman
Synecdoche New York and Capote defined PSH, and you managed to slip the former through your fingers... Really what??
His performance as Davien in MI:3 was the one of the most successfully done villain role in history. Must be high placed.
It's not favorite Philip Seymour Hoffman film, but my favorite role of his is when he played Sandy Lyle in Along Came Polly. His comedic delivery is some of the best I've ever seen in any film.
What about Flawless? His performance as a drag queen along with Robert DeNiro's cop character was, well... flawless.
i came here from Flawless
Philip Seymour Hoffman was a master. No pun intended. Top class, brilliant.
Synecdoche, New York is brilliant acting. The special features talk about how between scenes he'd stay in character. When he finally died was astounding.
synecdoche, new york synecdoche, new york synecdoche, new york
This man was such a brilliant actor and a wonderful man, he was taken from us far too soon. We'll miss you dearly, Philip Seymour Hoffman. Rest in peace.
What about him in punch drunk love as the mattress man?
***** those 5 minutes > most of the hunger games scenes
That's that!
WatchMojo: SHUT UP! SHUT THE FUCK UP! Will you SHUT UP! SHUT SHUT SHUT SHUT SHUT UP! SHUT UP!

I'm sorry but the reason I even know who PSH was is because of his role in Along Came Polly. I knew he was a serious actor, I knew he had a lot of talent, but unlike many of the powerhouses we see on the Oscar stage, he took a small comedic role in a rom-com and became the single best thing about the movie. It's great to highlight his dramatic talents, but what made him great was his range.
So true! He's absolutely fantastic in that small role and so hilarious.
Every film he was in, he was the star. Those that burn the brightest also burn out fastest. I'm so tired of seeing people I admire and who give me a few hours of joy turn up dead the next day, usually from drugs, accidental or not. River Phoenix broke my young heart. Tom Petty broke my adult heart. Losing Hoffman is like dropping your priceless diamond ring down the gutter. It's irreplaceable and for the most stupid reason. Thank you all for the joy you brought us. I wish you hadn't also broken our hearts.
Do you agree with our list? Which one of Phillip Seymour Hoffman performance is the best? Every fucking one. I know of two actors who truly erase themselves in a role yet exude greatly in it. Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Daniel Day Lewis. We lost a great actor and all the many more amazing roles he would've gave us.
This is a fantastic comparison. They are truly gifted and I'm deeply saddened that I'll never have the opportunity to enjoy any more of his roles.
ur right! Iove them both!
The depth and range of his acting was incredible.
Sadly, very few people ever have such talent or genius.
Before the Devil knows You're Dead is such an underrated movie.
You are so right!!!
i know it is very underrated.i watched it when it came out, very good story and top acting by all actors. maybe people dont like such dark stories because it can be so relatable. most popular movies now are comics or crappy novel with cheesy acting, dialog, script, music, endings etc...
That and Doubt are very satisfying viewing. Capote is sensational-but very dark.
One of my very favorites!
What a great actor!, Rest In Peace Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
R.I.P , he was a good actor, i liked Capote and The Master a lot , i hope his scenes in Mockingjay were complete would like to see him one more time
hope so too :/
I loved Philip Seymour Hoffman. It breaks my heart that this man is not here any longer to shine his brilliance upon. 💜💔💔💜
What? You don't even bother pointing out his performance in synecdoche, new york? Really? It's gotta be his best performance in his career.
I hate drugs, so many great actors and musicians have lost to drugs, it's a great loss to the human society.
My favorite was Synecdoche, New York
What a pitty we lost him...he was mega actor....i say that he had all great performances...i cannot include a single one....
I miss him so much! RIP Phillip, you’ll never be forgotten.
Meryl Streep and him in Doubt were fantastic!
he was always the most interesting character in all of his movies. it is still so sad that he's gone
Capote portrayal is brilliant. He deserved the Oscar.
synecdoche, new york should be on this list
Best movie ever IMO.
Definitely
How is it NOT on the list?!!!
"Patch Adams" was the first movie where I really started to notice him. You can't forget "Along Came Polly" though. One of his best!
His performance in MI3 just blew me away. I was stunned by the power of his performance, it was my introduction to this man and i have loved him ever since. Owning Mahoney is one of my very favorite films. i miss him :(
Where's synecdoche New York? It's not even an honorable mention, that makes me sad :(
One of my favorite actors. Truly one of the greats of his generation. Miss seeing him.
This guy really was a great actor, so glad Mission Impossible made this list, he saved that movie. Period. Also glad that he got to play Truman Capote, I miss him already.
He saved a LOT of movies, one of which I believe was Doubt. Found that entire film and acting overrated except for Hoffman's.
His performances never let me down. He was rare.
Indeed..He had so much to give..and his career ended so soon..
but he did do really bad drugs so that is his fault
People die in automobile crashes too, yet we drive cars. It's not his "fault." The man had demons.
You guys made me watch Capote
I wasn't dissapointed
Thank you
Miss him. Loved all of his work.
What about "Flawless"?? He was hilarious and well...flawless in that, too!
He was hilarious in Along Came Polly.
RIP. I hate thinking that that's all we get. He will definitely be missed.
feels like just yesterday he passed, only 48, greatest actor of my lifetime, in his own league.
My favorite movie is Flawless (1999). I was totally engrossed from start to finish! Why is this movie of his rarely mentioned? I never saw a movie quite like this one. It shows how people who are very different from one another can get along if they work at it and respect one another's differences..
Another PSH movie I haven't seen. Looking forward to discovering this gem!
I really love that!!!
Best actor ever. For years, my Mom didn't know who he was because he totally becomes each role. The guy who played Truman Capote was also Scotty J.? No way!
De Niro and Brando ...
I really enjoyed him in Mission Impossible 3... Because I found him genuinely intimidating. He wasn't in good shape, he didn't look capable of fighting... But he just seemed like a guy you wouldn't mess with, purely due to his intellect.
I think Along Came Polly could of had an honourable mention.
Haven't seen it so can't pass judgement.
Oh. haha. Coincidence there is a film called Crocodile tears too.
No.
definitly, as medicre as the movie is, he is fantastic!!
No Synecdoche?! What the hell?
Heart breaking to watch this, the guy was a great actor and resonated a sensitivity and depth every time I saw him on screen. Breaks my heart to know he and Robin Williams have passed on this year.
"Capote" was an awesome movie with an awesome actor as lead role.
His death is a tragic loss.
Gotta be The Master. Mind-boggling that he didn't win the Oscar for that.
Totally agree. I preferred him over Christoph from Django Unchained
I agree too that the Master was his best... only I like Joaquin's performance a little better.
Adam Lans It's pretty much a tie to me, although I'd give Hoffman an edge if only because he stole that prison scene in my opinion.
ha ya that was a pretty aweome scene. I like Joaquin's ability to go through a healing process throughout the movie... becoming timid, to angry, back to timid... it was so versitile. Hoffman was more subtle. He conveyed this slightly troubled man, but kind of acted his way through concealing itwith other more complex characteristics like controlling and patronizing tendencies
Strongly agree with you. He was brilliant in "Capote" and deserved that Oscar, but he gave my favorite performance in "The Master." You could easily see how he might be able to lead a cult, couldn't you?
Phillip Seymour Hoffman was an amazing actor. I think it's safe to say he didn't get his first acting role coz of his looks...his talent was not something learned, like great artists and singers, it was a gift from God he was born with. Few of us are that fortunate.
I saw ole Philip for the first time as "Dusty" from "Twister" and ever since he has been one of my favorite actors. May he rest in piece.
The world lost more than a talented man that day, but a potential inspiration for many.
Synecdoche, New York didn't even make the list, how ridiculous is that..
THIS was the role of his life.
He was a wonderful actor. I always adore his characters. I first saw him as Scotty in Boogie Nights, and knew I would love him ever since!
Just heartbreaking to lose this fine actor. His Capote was magnificent. He really transformed himself. Wish he could have gotten help.
Was really hoping to see his character in Red Dragon. That role creeps me out!
Damn, with that face and smile + acting he would make a fine Joker.
I AGREE AGAIN WITH YOUR LIST !!!!!! Rest in Peace Philip Seymour Hoffman !
Synecdoche New York?
I was devastated when I heard about his death and now, watching all of these clips, I feel that at the time of his death, we had not seen his true greatness. These movies remind me of his brilliance, his talent, dedication and what could have been. But I relish Capote, The Master, Scent of a Woman, Mission Impossible, even Twister and of course, The Big Lebowski. Sweet dreams Philip.
Was in tears by the time "the Master" splashed in. Seeing this, I know the truth that he did have so much to give. He may have given a lot of rare, intense and emotionally vulnerable and captivating performances only actors can dream and inspire to be, he still had something golden to give us. He may have been 46 but he still was young, he still had the youthful embodiment in himself to portray with grace and relaxation.
One true actor and a true loss to Hollywood and viewers alike. RIP Philip, I'll always miss your performances.
I loved the master and every other performance that he has done
+Dopey Donut me too
I'll never watch another Hoffman movie the same again.
Recently I saw an Australian animated film called 'Mary & Max'. I was completely surprised to learn the title role of Max was voiced by Hoffman. Its an assured testament to the mans versatility in his art that,in the context we were not able to see him,the voice he provided was one I would never for a million years have guessed was from Phillip Seymour Hoffman. We've lost an amazing talent in the world of film.
Philip Seymour Hoffman is a legend!
The bit they chose in Boogie Nights where he's walking Diggler to the shoot, the thing he did with the pen as sign of his desire, using the pen as a phallic symbol is so subtle and such a sign of true acting
Tommy...how's the peeping? Tommy?...how's the peeping...
@@regiwhiting1833 they were like neck and neck, Toby looked more like Capote though.
But this list is missing Happiness and Schenectady, NY, so that’s definitely a bigger joke.
We'll miss you Dusty! You were the extreme! R.I.P.
He was a freaking beauty !! He will
Be missed
Shades of Marlon Brando and for sure wholly underrated and unappreciated in his time. And now, with much remorse and sadness, both superb talents from Patch Adams are gone.
Obviously his best role was in Along Came Polly. His acting was so incredible you could almost smell it when he sharted in that film.
He was an awesome actor. It's such a shame he's no longer with us. Rest In Peace Philip
Still miss Phillip Seymour Hoffman. He is one of my favorite actors and still enjoy his work
god, I loved Freddie Miles, 'how's the peeping tommy? Tommy Tommy Tommy Tommy Tommy."
Glad you got my 2 personal favorites - Happiness and Magnolia. I'd probably like him in Capote, too, though I haven't seen the movie. I'm glad he won an Academy Award before he died, because he certainly deserved it with his talent. The man could maneuver all kinds of roles and wasn't just another Hollywood pretty face but a real character actor.
Not even a mention of his performance in Red Dragon, as gossip rag columnist Freddy Lounds. He was awesome in that.
And no Twister?! Smh
And to everyone who says that this is "idolizing a heroin addict"...you just look ignorant.
This list is simply based on his acting skill, not his personal life.
His death is tragic. The people who are shaming him for being an addict has obviously never dealt with the disease that is heroin addiction. You're lucky. You didn't have to watch so many of your friends/family struggle with this. Struggle to get clean, only to relapse and overdose 4, 5, 6, 10 years later. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Be happy that you never had to witness that, but don't trash the ones who had to deal with this disease. I'm not saying you have to feel sympathetic. I'm not trying to tell you how to feel or think about this, but I am saying don't trash people, especially if you haven't dealt with this particular disease personally.
As mentioned before, Love Liza. The most raw display of grief, despair and humor in one of the best films I've ever seen
He was one of the best I have ever seen, and I am 62.
R.I.P Mr. Hoffman
R.I.P everyone else you don't give a single fuck about
R.I.P everyone who has died. unless you killed bunch of people then I guess not. not including war.
Capote was a great movie, and I agree that it's Phillip Seymour Hoffman's best performance.
May he rest in peace.
Just a shame that this man has left us. Such an amazing actor and man, I wish he still was still with us. But, just as he said in the film "The Savages", "Because People Die! Death is gaseous and gruesome and it's full of shit and piss and rotten stink." It's terrible, he will be missed.
My heavens....... I sought out some info on this extraordinary actor and I was lead here.
I'm currently watching Capote for the second time tonight.... last night was the first. Yes!
The first! Never got to see it back then.
I marvel at his talent and often wonder how gifted and talented stars struggle and find the need to use medicinal medications ...... So glad we have his work to remember. Wherever he is, rest in peace..xx
R.I.P Philip Seymour Hoffman
Maybe it's just me but does anyone think he could of played The Penguin in a Batman movie? I think he would of owned that role.
agreed
yes he should
He would have been perfect for an Orson Welles biopic.
great compilation! thank you.
The only mojo I've added to my favourites.. Legend
