Regarding "Sweet Leaf", there's a funny clip of an interview from the 70s where the band gets asked what they do for fun, and Ozzy automatically answers "Smoke marijuana". The interviewer does kind of a double take and asks "You're joking, right?", and Ozzy just goes "Oh yeah, just joking!" and the whole band erupts to laughter. The coughing at the start of the song is Tony Iommi coughing after taking a deep inhale. The band was on ALL the drugs in the 70s. When they lived in Los Angeles in -72, they had a designated Coke Table in their house.

Excellent reaction to an amazing album! The constant tom beat you hear throughout the studio version of Children Of The Grave is never repeated in a live performance as far as I'm aware. It was just layered over the track for effect. Impossible to do while playing the regular beat without 4 hands or another drummer.
I think it's timbales, like Edgar Winter plays in Frankenstein. I used to jam with a guy who could approximate that sound live. He was a great drummer.
Embryo was just Tony fooling around, playing his guitar with a violin bow. A lot of their heavier songs have odd little musical interludes as a starter.

You will fall in love with the first 5 Sabbath albums. I always thought the theme song to "Friends" by The Rembrandts sounded just like the beginning of "After Forever". Next up Vol. 4. Great reaction gain. \m/\m/
I've seen a couple other comments that lead me to think that Sabotage isn't particularly loved. To me it's head and shoulders above Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, which has me curious about people's Sabotage opinions
Both Bass and guitar down tune to C#. I play in a Sabbath tribute band it is so much fun to play their stuff and some of the basslines are way more complex than they sound I love the way Sabbath can make one song sound like three different songs. I can honestly say I think i prefer the downtuned stuff like into the void, under the sun, children of the grave to name but a few classic Sabbath tracks, Glad you like them so much :)
Everyone talks about the first album as being the groundbreaking one. But I think this one opens so many doors - Stoner metal, Doom, Grunge. It al starts here. And the dropped tunings (C Sharp, I think?) means the bottom end on this is so ridiculously heavy. Also, the riffs. Into the Void has about 5 different riffs in it. Ronnie Dio was once quoted as saying something like "If you write 3-4 great riffs in your lifetime, you're lucky, and you'll be remembered. Tony Iommi writes 3-4 great riffs in an afternoon."
Iommi actually tuned his guitar down because he accidentally cut off his fingertips. It made it easier to play. It just also happened to sound awesome.
An industrial accident created a whole genre of music. Losing the fingertips of the middle two fingers of his fretting hand just at the point of going pro meant he had to adapt his whole playing style.
Sweet Leaf is about Mirajanna, and Tony Iommi tuned down his guitar on the first 3 Black Sabbath albums due to his accident in the sheet metal factory he worked at
Welcome to Black Sabbath!! This is the original Doom Metal album. Listen to the perfection of Tony and Geezer's downtuned riffs, the drumming, and Ozzy's high octave lyrics... It is like candy to the ears! What I believe you love about Ozzy's voice is that it's like liquid... It just flows between the notes like the water flowing through a river of heavy rocks.
1) Joy Division - She’s Lost Control 2) Geezer pretty much wrote all the Ozzy period lyrics 3) Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album always stuck with me from when I was younger. However, doesn't get as much love, it seems. There are some amazing tracks on it. Just do them all chronologically. Why the hell not.
@@kirawasareactor The record label, again. They cut the intros and gave them random titles as if they were independent songs. Otherwise it would be a record with only 6 songs. On Vol. 4 Iommi did some similar things like the songs Fluff, FX or Laguna Sunrise but they were his own ideas and titles. This album is like a bridge from early Sabbath to Vol. 4 and the following 2 albums. And it is magnificent, of course :-)
My favourite albums are the first (isn't that cover art just amazing??), Master Of Reality and Sabotage. Also Mob Rules with Dio. Black Sabbath never get old!
In my opinion Bill Ward is one of the most underrated drummers, and with Geezer's thundering basslines you have one of rocks best rhythm sections. Tony Iommi tuned his guitar down because an industrial accident chopped the ends off the middle two fingers of his right hand. He found it easier to play that way, and the Black Sabbath sound was born. The song you played at the end was by Joy Division, I can't remember the name though (it maybe She's Lost Control, I haven't listened to their music for years).
he didn't tune down cause he hurt his fingers, he just tuned down cause he wanted to. he used e standard on their first 2 albums and select songs from later (sweet leaf, symptom on the universe, megalomania)
That's a very interesting little fun fact that you talked about with the first album and the upside-down cross on the inside of the cover!! I'm one of those crazy creatures from the sixties and seventies that actually listened to everything on cassette tape!!! I did not have vinyl albums!! So a lot of time a lot of the artwork that was done for album covers especially the inside covers was lost on cassette tape covers!! Consequently I never realized there was an upside-down cross on the first album!! The story about it being done by the record company or management sounds like it could be feasible!! I know that Black Sabbath had a reputation as being Satanist or devil worshiping type of music only because of their look I believe and that's why they made a point to write songs like After Forever!! You could take after forever and give it to any Christian rock band and it would go over like crazy!! Personally I never thought of Black Sabbath as any type of Satan or devil worshiping type of music!!! I just loved it because it was hard driving heavy metal to me and I love that kind of music!!
I think it's my favorite Sabbath album and it really influenced a lot of bands from Stoner, Doom, Gothic, Thrash Metal and other variations of the style! I love Geezer Butler's bass on it and his lyrics, by the way, the person coughing at the beginning of Sweet Leaf is Tony Iommi after a big drag on a "very special" cigarette with a "very special leaf"! So are you left-handed? Me too, but I can't play bass or left-handed guitars! Speaking of bass, I like the lines right in front of Hooky on the Joy Division albums and the first New Order records! As soon as possible I will buy a Rickenbacker bass because of him, Geezer, Cliff Burton, Lemmy and Geddy Lee, they are my favorite bass players.
Hell yeah! I love this album. But that's an appropriate reaction to Sweet Leaf's intro, the coughing loop is SO LOUD and so random. What were they thinking?!

I've seen a couple other comments that lead me to think that Sabotage isn't particularly loved. To me it's head and shoulders above Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, which has me curious about people's Sabotage opinions
@@Drforrester31 That's fair.
HOOOH... Black Sabbath the Black Sabbath!!! Ese disco es el unicio del metal
Ha ha ha...your reactions are awesome! Second greatest metal album after Master of Puppets, IMHO.
The birthplace of many genres of metal is Masters of Reality.
I love your reactions
AWWWWW THANK YOU
The first 100% heavy metal album IMHO and my fav album of Sabbath too
youre awesome lol, love black sabbath
Both Bass and guitar down tune to C#. I play in a Sabbath tribute band it is so much fun to play their stuff and some of the basslines are way more complex than they sound I love the way Sabbath can make one song sound like three different songs. I can honestly say I think i prefer the downtuned stuff like into the void, under the sun, children of the grave to name but a few classic Sabbath tracks, Glad you like them so much :)
Probably my favorite Sabbath album.
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation next!!!
Omg you are a lefty. So am I and you sound awesome. ❤
The guitar was originally tuned down so it was easier on Tony”s injured finger tips. Geezer wrote 99% of the bands lyrics. Love your reactions.
For next Black Sabbath I would go "Sabotage" \m/
Sweet Leaf is about Mirajanna, and Tony Iommi tuned down his guitar on the first 3 Black Sabbath albums due to his accident in the sheet metal factory he worked at
Did a cover of After Forever live before. The phrasing gets tricky but i loved singing it. Great song.
Ah yes, my generation...it will never get old. I never get tired of rocking out to these old Sabbath tunes
Welcome the sweet sound of DOOOOOOOM METAL! 🤘🙌
Brings me back to my youth, my first album i ever brought. I played the shit out of it!
Embryo functions just as in intro to Children of the Grave
ah got it! thanks. I love it on it's own anyways haha
Greetings from Mexico 💕 :)
I love Geezer Butler, his playing and his sound. If you love the bass, another great album you should try is Led Zeppelin II.
Black Sabbath rock royalty. A band that influenced your favorite band. Facto.
Gotta do all the albums with ozzy nowww!!!
Anther British rock band that kind of paralleled Black Sabbath is Budgie. Their peak years were from 1970 to 1984.
