An interesting take you have on this, Syed, and just as valid, but for me I think it is literally a song about a future attempt to escape a troubled and polluted Earth by trying to colonise another world. The void being outer space.
I totally agree on your abstract look into the lyrics, but it is simply a song about fleeing Earth after mankind has wasted it. Eddie Van Halen said this was his favorite Sabbath song because of that heavy groove. Van Halen, by the way, opened up for Black Sabbath in 1978 on the never say die tour, also Ozzy's last album of that era.
Although we may interpret the track differently, I think we can all agree that only a great song like this can be read into in so many ways. Black Sabbath are in a league on their own!
@@SyedRewinds All music is open to ones interpretation. Most of the arts are that way. Being a old rocker it's nice seeing the younger generation hearing things I heard back in the day.
The world was never more chemically polluted at the time this song was written. It was expressly written as there was a possibility with the very new technology of space travel, we could journey..into the void..of space and find a new world and start over. Of course everything is always open to interpretation with art.
Tony Iommi is the father of heavy metal. "Black Sabbath" was originally a jazz band called "Earth". After an accident on his last day of work at a factory in Birmingham, Tony Iommi lost three of his fingertips. He was told he would never be able to play again, so he designed plastic fingertips from a soap bottle. As a result of missing multiple fingers, he was forced to lower the tension on his guitar strings and accidentally created Heavy Metal. Every metal band owes Black Sabbath their career. It's almost like the prophecy had to be fulfilled through a offering of his flesh & blood.
Sabbath is such a great band. Other great songs to check out could be, “Symptoms of the Universe” , “Solitude” , “Snowblind” or “…Children of the grave”. Hopefully you will enjoy!
If you ever want to hear the greatest heavy slow riff, check out Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, the middle section. I know the name sounds intense, but its truly incredible. Thanks.
I knew of Black Sabbath but really got into the music during pandemic. I love to watch people discover them almost as recently as I. If you like the funky riff, check out Snowblind, Sweet Leaf and Fairies Wear Boots.
Whats up Janice! Their music just sucks you in with its vibe/atmosphere and lyrically they're are so imaginative! Also thanks for the song recommendations ❤
Fairies wear boots is big band music from the 40s played through loud amps. It sounds so stupid on paper but fuckin listen to that shit! Also check out the Heaven and Hell Ronnie James Dio stuff 😁
Good choice of song to react to. The main riff is one of the most heavy and doomy riffs of all time . Speaking of doom, "Hand of Doom" has some great lyrics. Another favorite of mine is "A National Acrobat". But it's hard to pick favorites as their first 6 albums are solid all way through.
Nice metaphorical interpretation you had there, although the song was written by bassist Geezer Butler and is literally about taking a rocket ship through space in escaping a desolated earth, polluted and damned by sin, wars, etc.. and trying to find another world to live in peace.
Thanks again. Black Sabbath is a special band, of course. There was a time, though in the 80s where many didn't have a great opinion of them. Then Grunge hit and took a lot from Black Sabbath. Now as time goes on, the place of Black Sabbath in music history is becoming more clear. They were very important. In my view, more important than all other heavy bands in the formation of Metal.
I think the biggest thing to keep in mind as you dive into classic rock is that "rock n roll" had no boundaries and sound. There were no labels. Everything the bands back then were original music (I know. I know.. they took from others.) with no influence from the record companies. At that time, they didn't know what it was or how to make it more commercial. The artist created their own sounds as "rock". I try to imagine if this was allowed to continue with the record companies taking their que from the artist and not the other way around.
Well, Tony Iommy is a King of heavy riffs. And of course he's one of the inventors of heavy riffs. There're lots of great metal guitar players. Some of them (not many) created a couple of iconic riffs. Iommy created dozens of iconic riffs. Almost any riff from Sabbath's first albums is iconic.
luck enough to have seen them three times live and the last time the front band was Buckingham Nicks who became part of Fleetwood Mac man I miss those days
People will cite Sabbath as one of the godfathers of heavy metal (true), but their influence on the grunge movement is undeniable. Heck, Soundgarden even covered this on an early EP, though they changed the lyrics to Chief Sealth's similarly themed "letter".
One of my all-time favorite songs since 1973! (I was a little late to the party) Don't overthink the lyrics. Escaping from a dying world at some point in the future. Movies have been made with that very theme (Interstellar comes to mind as one).
Just subscribed, I love your reactions and the way you comment on the different parts of the song 🙂. Sabbath's lyricist was the bass player, Terry 'Geezer' Butler 👍. I had the privilege of meeting Tony Iommi at a charity dinner, I was pretty much lost for words, the guy is a legend 😎. Great band, hugely influential and still much loved today. I attended their final gig in their home city of Birmingham in 2017, an amazing night 👍.
For another amazing musical experience with them, try the pioneering heavy metal suite on side 2 of their debut album, it is A Bit of Finger/Sleeping Village/Warning. This is a seminal jam in the history of hard blues rock/metal and Tony Iommi goes completely off in Warning. Every new Sabbath fan needs to hear it (and their first 6 albums, really). Enjoy! 🎸
Told you it would change your life. Now for another heavy metal band with primo musicians and ridiculous story telling try Iron Maiden the best of the second wave of metal. I recommend "Hallowed Be Thy Name" live at Hammersmith 1982, you will be blown away. A song about a condemned man going through the 5 stages of grief - absolutely epic metal.
Being a fan of Mental and heavy music in general has one simple rule,if you feel the music (just like you are doing) and you get it ,your one of us-everything else is just details. Its fantastic seeing the younger generation being open to other forms of music, that they are not familiar with, and giving it a chance!
Kurt Cobain is the guy that made me pick up a guitar in the first place, but Iommi is the one who influences my playing and writing the most as a guitar player. He and Kurt both have the gift of telling a story and conveying emotion just through the tone of their guitar work, but Iommi brings in that really intense blues influence that speaks to my soul. As an aside, although Ozzy came up with the vocal melody for Sabbath songs, he didn't write the lyrics for most of them. That honour belongs to bass player Geezer Butler. If the song is doomy, trippy or dark you can bet that Geezer wrote the lyrics. He also came up with the name for the band. Once you listen to a few more songs with the original lineup, check out Heaven and Hell with Ronnie James Dio on vocals. Dio makes the band sound completely different, and might be the single best vocalist in the history of rock music both technically and also in how he evokes emotion.
Kurt's playing may not be as intricate but his style is so intense and powerful. Iommi is a master of his craft for sure. Just checked out your cover on your channel, brilliant work mate keep at it!
