Top job mate. I've done this a few times. I like to cut the joists where the two 8*2 are going and the slide it in-between and put the joists on hangers so the ceiling runs nice and flat.. only problem is this way is when your cable and pipe work get in the way 🤬
Yeh awesome screws mate, so strong. I did actually get a quote and the steel was £800!? Not sure if that is a true price but with the fixings it cost me less than £100 for the materials 👍🏻
@@jackhines3747 good saving there mate. I made my gates 8 ft high nearly 3.5 m wide for just under 500 inc all hardware amazing what you can saving doing it yourself
@@jackhines3747 £800 for the steels required for that job is extremely steep! universal column and universal beam for a job like that should be no more than £300
Did the structural engineer design the bolts (the M12's to join the timbers together)? A little surprised not to see the bolts at the centerline rather than staggered as you have done, hopefully there's enough edge distances
50mm edge distance is all you need for an M12, staggered or centrelines doesn't really matter on a lightly loaded beam like this. You would usually stagger bolts on flitch beams .
Cheers Jack, have got two bathrooms above fully tiled so might use steel. Span is about the same as yours. Will have to get someone in to take a look, will take the ceilings down first.
Hi Jack, just curious is this a house that you are planning on living in after it’s finished or are you wanting to sell and move on? Great content btw! I’m a site joiner myself and also called Jack!
Hi jack! Yes it’s our first home mate, this was last year at the start of the first lockdown. Been living here since June. Just took all that time to get the videos up. Thanks 🙏
Haha I know mate, this is from April 😳 been a crazy year moving and renovating the house haven’t the time. Finally got round to it. The rest will be more present 👍🏻

Good vid
Thanks !
Why don't you use 90mm nails instead? I mean to fix the beam to the floor joists.
Good video mate them coach screws r good arent they used them when made my driveway gates . Bet thats a lot cheaper than having a steel made up also

Don’t think it was specified to be honest. But thought that was plenty enough 👍🏻
Better to stagger bolts (just like he did) so there is less chance of the beam splitting
That’s what I’m going to do in my kitchen diner, was going to get a steel but could use wood instead.
What was the length of the 8x2 Jack?
Well wood is defiantly cheaper Paul, just need to make sure it will pass with the weight requirements etc. Mine was about 2.9M. All the best

@@paulrickett4402 You might be able to use 2 bits of 8x2 with a steel plate in the middle, but check with SE
@@paulmcfadyen689 Yes Paul I’ve thought about that as well.
Have been itching to start for a while, Jacks vlog has given me the kick 🙂

Just wondering did u need planning at all to put this in ?
Not planning as such, just need building regs to sign it off 👍🏻
Hard to beat a bit off demo
Good progress it’s always harder working on your Owen house I think ....
Yes! Find it hard to try and find the motivation sometimes.
