I watched this video series before and during my basement build out. All the knowledge, tips and tricks to frame out my basement space is in this series. I gained the understanding and confidence to frame out my basement space. I had no previous experience framing out any space before. The directions and teaching in this series made the process approachable and relatively easy!
I was a stay at home parent to my twin kids, back in 2018-2020. I completed this project in bits and pieces. I would start one wall section, during a 2-hour nap. Laying out the 2x4 studs and marking their positions, before cutting and nailing with their "help". The whole process was very gratifying and I felt a lot of pride in doing the work. After a friend helped with roughing the electrical, and me insulating the walls, I installed the light boxes and outlets. Another friend did the drywall over a weekend away. I finished the space with a vinyl flooring, trim boards and paint!
This is absolutely the best video series about basement finishing. Do you have a video telling us how to calculate how many wood studs and plates we need? Thank you so much Eddie.

Not sure how I missed these videos after all of the UA-cam DIY videos I watch....next spring and getting as much info as I can before I start. I am in Illinois so a lot of the easier product to work with we can't use. I plan to do everything except the rough in plumbing.
People have no idea how many people are out here telling home owners they will do their bathroom kitchen and basement do it all for 20 grand and not even hardly have a clue what they are doing and then they actually hire help! So it’s a relief when you see someone else who knows what their doing

These videos are awesome! Exactly what I needed to get started finishing my basement. One question I do have is what if I have a my basement waterproofed and the proposed bottom framing plate will sit just above the waterproofing channels that sit just below the concrete. What would you suggest I use to secure the bottom plate without damaging the channels? Thank you!

Eddie - your 6 part series of framing a basement is the best on UA-cam. Thank you so much. Question ... how far is “wildly off” when making sure my intersecting chalk lines are a 90 degree right angle? In the vid, you were fine with your corner being off a 1/16” but I’m attempting to finish a basement of a 1951 Frank Lloyd Wright protégé designed house where absolutely nothing is straight and nothing is level. My marks are off a solid 1/4 to 3/8 inch. Is that ok? Or should I “drive myself nuts” trying to get that tighter? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, man!

Question inside my basement I have the plastic dimple roll stuff on the inside of basement can I just work 3 1/2 " off of that also I put dricore down first already gonna build frame on top of that cement is week from inside sump pump.
I would come 4.5" off of the dimple barrier just to sure I won't be pushing against it at all when I stand my walls up to fasten them. Thanks for the views brother and good luck with your basement!

Hands down the best video tutorial series for finishing basements! QUESTION - I'm in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. I have a brand new build home. Do you recommend I put insulation or that white stuff up against the wall as a vapor barrier or is it not necessary?
There is insulation behind the wall wrap. I recommend insulating a basement in Cleveland!

YES...A 2" X 4" IS ACTUALLY 1.5" X 3.5" IN SIZE...
What if the wall is not square. the 6 inch on both corners may not line up straight. how to get a perfect square to snap lines in this case?

Really great video that details all tools and exact screw sizes. I have question on how to frame when firestock/fireblock is required. What all materials are acceptable as fireblock? How would it impact all measurements?
at 25:19 did you mark that off of your technical drawing our was that just a guesstimate? Not critiquing, asking your method. Love your videos.
I wall wrap needed? My basement doesn’t have it. House was built in 1999 and has a rough in for a bathroom. So it was designed to be finished. Do I need any kind of plastic/wrap in between the studs and concrete?
Neither wall warp and especially plastic vapor barriers are NOT needed! Wall wrap it just for unfinished basements by code...once you remodel all that's needed is the new insulation between the newly framed exterior wall studs...and that's it. Hope this helps.

I have 2" XPS installed along my poured foundation. I see you measure far enough away from the wall so the framing isn't touching the wall wrap. Long story short, I need to maximize my space and every inch counts. Can I frame right against my XPS, or do I need to leave some space (and why)?

We live in an old farm house. The basement has a shallow trough running along the exterior walls. It dumps into the garage, not a sump.
Can I frame out beyond this trough without causing any issues? Very little water webs up in this trough as the basement doesn't leak, currently.
Or, can I just glue FRP board to the walls leaving the trough exposed?

I unserstand how to build a studwall for a basemnt with 16 inch centers. The problem i have is how when you join two walls at a 90 ( corner ) you have then changed and shortened the first wall by 31/2 inches and now you do not have 16" centers on that first wall? Im sure there is a simple solution but it is just not computing with me. thank you for your great videos
Hi Eddie. Awesome videos!! So much so I want to try and tackle my basement myself. You mention 6” and 4 1/2” for your exterior walls. That being said, I have Superior walls. Do you recommend 4 1/2” with these as well?

Hello Brandon! You can always use airless framing guns (Best!) or simply use 16 penny nails and hand-nail all of your framing together...I esed to do it this way 25 years ago...but it's a lot of work to do it this way.

Thank you Mr Case for your how to videos. They are very beneficial to learn how to finish my basement. I have a framing question I was hoping you could give me some suggestions with. I currently have a wall on one side of my basement steel beam. The other side of the steal beam has HVAC ducts so I need to build a soffit which will be the bathroom ceiling. I want to install a door into the existing wall to enter the bathroom but don't know how to frame/trim it. Concrete to beam is 80.5 inches so i don't want to loose any height. Thank you

Question inside my basement we have an interior french drain, they installed a dimpled matrix about 18" up the concrete block wall from the bottom where they dug the trench and concreted over it. Should I just measure off 3-1/2" from the dimple matrix? Also, not sure if I should apply rigid foam board up against the concrete block and down over top of the dimple matrix or just frame the wall and insulate between 2x4's. Thanks you!
How do you insulate a basement with no wall wrap? Start with foam board, frame, fiberglass insulation?
Wish I had seen this before I framed my 1st wall! I put 2nd stud 16” instead of 15 1/4 from start so all studs are 3/4” off - oops - now what? Tear it down or add studs for drywall or nothing since wall is 11’-9” (12 ft. drywall board no butt joints)
Just pull your board out from the corner a 1/2" and go with it you'll be fine Allen.

Basement Finishing Man Drywall board? Wall is nailed up to joists and attached to slab. Just means drywall screws don’t go exactly where expected, but, easy enough to mark drywall where screws go....Hiring drywall out, hope they don’t hate me ;-). Great videos, BTW.

My walls do not have the wrap on them. I am located in South eastern Pennsylvania, Chester county. Do you know if I am required to have a vapor barrier? My entire basement is below grade. Where can I purchase the wall wrap? In the process of filling out the paperwork to apply for a work permit.
You should of made room in the closet for the water heater to be moved/replaced, which will likely happen.
We did relocate it inside the closet...not sure what your saying here?

4.5 " of the Styrofoam panels...just treat of the foam-board as the concrete wall and do everything the same as I did in the videos. ~Eddie

at 16:05 - the Wall Wrap. What is the purpose for it (I assume it's for moisture control?)? what does it do? how do you hang it?
It's installed by the builder of the home 99% of the time, and it's code in most regions now to install it when the house is built. It gives your unfinished basement the required R-Value the building code requires...in other words...it's supposed to keep the unfinished basement warmer and more comfortable saving you on energy costs.

Do we treat walls 2 and 3 the same if they aren’t against the concrete walls? To the left and right of wall 1 will be unfinished rooms.
What would u do if the framing square was not aligned with the chalk lines, how would you compensate?
I would adjust and then re-snap either one of the new walls lines a little, bringing the angle that I'm off currently in or out to create a correct 90 degree angle. I will tell you that I very rarely have to redo my lines...I'm 99% good each and every-time I layout my wall lines...so the chances of you having to readjust your lines would be extremely rare!

The one question I have while I am planning all this framing out for the next week - if there isn't anything under the joists hanging down, can I just attach drywall to those direct instead of spending extra time/money framing a ceiling? I have a quick question about framing nail guns. How do you decide if you want to use 21degree or 30degree nail guns. I called my township and they don't have any code regarding this. Any advise will be great help.
Why do you come out from the wrap? For lack of knowledge, I though the wrap would come down, the wall would go up against the wall and then insulation between the studs.
I noticed you don't have any videos regarding types of subfloors? What would you consider the best subfloor in a cold climate?
Hey Eddie, Thank you for the awesome videos! It has given me the confidence to start my basement finish. I have one quick questions though. In one corner of my basement, the concrete floor is angled up quite a bit towards the foundation wall. On one side I have 83" slab to the floor joist, on the other corner, it is only 81". How do I frame with that big of a difference?
Is it possible to cut a small angled bottom plate in front of the bad concrete ? Or if you want to make it right, you can rent demolition hammer and just chisel it flat. Hope that helps, if I'm picturing it right.

You stated that if you have a wall wrap to measure out 6", but if you do not to do 4 1/2". What if only the upper half of the basement wall is wrapped? Do you still come out 6" for the entire wall?
Yes…correct!
Can anyone answer (hundreds of comments to look through otherwise), why 4.5” off the wall if there’s no wall wrap? Is that because the wall may not be perfectly vertical, &/or so you don’t have the heat transfer from direct stud contact against the wall? What if your walls are nearly perfectly vertical (mine seem to tilt in 1-2 degrees), and you have (1” R 7.5) O.C. foam board against the cinder block (in my case)? The 1” foam board is a very good thermal break.
It's because as you said Allan, the exterior wall may be tipped in or out at the top and you will lose a possible inch in the vertical. So I make it a habit to just give myself a good inch of "forgiveness" just in case I have an exterior masonry wall that's not perfectly plumb on my plate. I hope this makes sense to you... Im going to finish my basement house is built in the 40's, is it wise for me to use the Pythagoras Theorem instead of using a framing square? My walls are definitely not square.
Use a framing square and check and readjust it's much faster than the 3-4-5 method (Pythagoras Theorem)...don't over-complicate this layout process.

Awesome videos. My wall wrap is about 3.5 inches thick. Would you snap a line farther from the foundation? Say 7 or 8 inches instead of 6?
Our basement has had moisture issues upon moisture issues. $20,000 later... We think they are resolved now but are not wanting to use wood, just in case we get moisture and mold again. What inorganic options do you recommend for instead of wood & drywall?
None! If the moisture issue is truly fixed you can use standard building materials and sleep good at night...You could use all M.R. drywall (moisture resistant) that will withstand higher levels of humidity than regular 1/2" drywall. You could also use metal studs which are a commercial style of framing, but I don't recommend these materials as they are not needed if your basement is "dry".

Basement Finishing Man - if you are running your chalk lines off a wall on one wall to hide a plumbing line(say 6"). Do you have to use the same distance off the wall even when the other walls allows for your 4.5" off the other walls because I don't have any plumbing lines to hide with the other walls? Does every wall have to be the same distance away from the concrete to make a 90? thanks in advance...

Your videos are so easy to follow. I'm looking to begin finishing the basement in the next month. My house is 3 years old, do you recommend adding a moisture or vapor barrier before doing drywall? I live in Ohio. I've read different recommendations and can not decide which recommendations are correct. Thank you in advance.
No Lulu! I do no not recommend vapor barriers. They cause more mold issues than they ever prevented. ~Eddie

Why do you have plastic cover on the concrete walls? I think that you will get a mold issue since it prevent air circulation.

When bldg a partition wall off another wall, do you sandwich a stud facing flat between two studs on edge?
If you measure 4.5 inches off the wall in order to snap a chaulk line, there's a chance that the wall has some waves in it. So, 4.5 inches on one end, may not be a true 4.5 inches at the other end. You'll have a straight line, but not necessarily square to the wall. Does that make sense?
That's why we come out 4.5" instead of 3.5"...to account for the uneveness of an average wall... ~Eddie
@@BasementFinishingMan After watching further, it occurred to me that if you're squaring the corners of where the walls meet with the framing square, that would alleviate any issue regarding the walls being square off the wall? Also, have you ever used the 3 4 5 method to square?
Are you carrying a full framing hammer even though you use air nailers? Or are you carrying something lighter like a smaller 20 ounce hammer?
I carry a 16 oz. hammer just to knock things around if I need a club! No I don't carry a 20 oz. or heavier framing hammer when I'm using airless or air framing guns. ~Eddie
I have a water shutoff valve that sticks out 9 inches on half of my 10ft wall. Should I make the entire wall stick out 9 inches or just the section where the water valve is? I know you typically recommend straight walls but I was wondering if it would be worth it to add the additional 5 inches of wall space for the other half of the room. It's a small room, only 10x10. Hi Danny! I don't use any of those type system. All of our basement walls are built directly on the concrete floor. We use no types of floor barriers under our finished flooring...
We fix bad dips and uneven areas with floor leveler we mix up...you can but floor leveler at Home Depot or Lowes if you need it!

Thanks for these great how to videos. Quick question I have a French drain around the entire exterior of my basement. Would I measure 4.5 inches from the actual wall for my floor plates or 4.5 inches from the edge of the French drain which is about an inch wide? Thank you.

Will the 2.5 inch ramset nails puncture radiant floor lines/tubes in my basement concrete? I guess I don't know how deep the floor heat is in the concrete.
No Matt...they only penetrate the concrete 1" and your concrete floor is at least 3"-4" thick and the radiant lines should be below the concrete surface so your good. Remember 1.5" of the nail is going through the bottom plate thickness first...so that'e eat's-up 1.5" of the nail depth right-out-of-the-gun!
Could you use a laser level to determine your lines instead of chalk line?
Yes absolutely! We do it both ways and as of late we use the laser even more! ~Eddie
