    I loved Kevin‘s commentary and educational points between 1130 and 1230. Wanted to hear more about the ATC side. The controller was stressed and you saw him probably at his worst. He got better and it was nice to see you guys give him a chance. Thanks for all the hard work.

      I could be wrong, but (lacking any other viable explanation) because he copped an immediate attitude and afterwards said he was “working a lot of other planes that were already IFR,” I think the controller was trying to convey that he was a little miffed that they didn’t pick up their clearance in advance on the ground, so they could be sequenced with other IFR traffic accordingly.

      "Stressed" is NOT an excuse...there are MANY responses that ahole could have come back with instead of the unprofessional rudeness.

    I think you guys handled it perfectly. With a response like that just ask if there's anything they want you to do in the meantime and hang out. It was just under 2.5 minutes until he got back to you. Yeah, people get busy. You don't know what pilot you are working with and you could add a lot of undue stress to particular pilots which can make the airspace less safe. Spot on with the feedback in the air about how ATC could have responded differently.

    Even if he said something to the effect of "Hey N3802D I'm a bit busy right now as the only controller (or one of two or three controllers) on duty handling X number of aircraft, contact me (or I'll contact you) in about 5 - 10 minutes as I expect to be less busy then and we can get your IFR clearance on the go. Meanwhile maintain VFR" even if his phrasing was not exactly standard/proper, it would have been better than what he actually said. To Kevin's point about gravy - I like a good white or sausage gravy here. Also for Mindy - I enjoy a good Bourbon as well.

    Hey @Schmiiindy why not get your release on the ground? Kevin was 100% correct about that controller’s phraseology (or lack thereof), but why not just call and get your release on the ground and then just check-in normally? I can tell you up there in N90 (NE), you gotta do that or you will be waiting a lot more than 5 minutes (though they might do what Kevin says and give you a local squawk and just say, “remain VFR”).

    Some people have their own ways of doing things. And they don’t care about how it ought to be done. They don’t care how what they do affects others. They just think they’re entitled to doing things their way. And I’m sick and tired of these people whoever they are. There is a reason why flying is far safer than driving on the ground!!!

    • @RetreadPhoto

    That was fascinating and pretty disturbing. This doesn’t mean anything other than to say, I flew a lot, owned 2 different airplanes with partners maybe before you both were born. Maybe when you were newborns. Here is the deal. I live vicariously through you and others like you. I’d actually like to fly again and maybe one day will figure it out. That exchange caused me pause. I get it, I’m sure that controller was very busy. The exchange was simply not ok. What if you were about to go actual or you knew you were 60 seconds from going actual.
    It’s like social media in general, be careful what you say and how you say it because you WILL light up the string. That controller was simply out of line. They should never create confusion and unease in the cockpit. Why? Because you are in the air, possibly moments from going actual and he’s on the ground drinking coffee he’s very unlikely to die for unnecessary reasons. That’s just my observation.

    I’ve never heard the term “looking for instruments.” Is that in the guide somewhere? He may have thought you were looking for flight following or a pop-up, or more likely he’s just nudging people to request CD on the ground by VHF or phone (out of Falcon, Speedway, etc.), instead of when airborne. I kind of feel him. Loading vectors on the approach is fairly unpopular. Just as easy to load the expected IAF (ESSEV), gives the most options.

    The controller was busy AND in a bad mood. Technically, the outcome was correct, you were handled in the right order. As you said, he could have been a bit nicer and clearer. "Squawk 1234, maintain VFR, expect your IFR clearance in 5 minutes." I suppose you could have picked up your IFR clearance on the ground via telephone. Not sure it that was an option from your departure field. As always, fun to ride along. Thanks for sharing your videos.

    • @RetreadPhoto
      @RetreadPhoto День тому

      It is an option, and appears to be ATL’s preference on a busy IFR day. In the A/FD it lists 119.8 as the VHF frequency for clearance delivery, along with an optional phone number. It doesn’t sound like they want people getting in the air first, for multiple reasons.

    Good grief, that controller was simply not at his best. Had one speak like that once when I was handling radios for a buddy driving his PC-12 into KTEB while in IFR, but it was more just the typical NYC metro area controller that probably has too many aircraft in tightly compated congested airspace. This guy in the video however, seemed like he just didn't wanna play that day.
    Does anyone feel that if Minday had called for her IFR clearance prior to departure that she might have had a less obstinate controller when calling for it afterwards?

      “5-2-3 IFR Clearances Off Uncontrolled Airports:
      Pilots departing on an IFR flight plan should consult the Chart Supplement to determine the frequency or telephone number to use to contact clearance delivery. On initial contact, pilots should advise that the flight is IFR and state the departure and destination airports.
      Air traffic facilities providing clearance delivery services via telephone will have their telephone number published in the Chart Supplement of that airport's entry. This same section may also contain a telephone number to use for cancellation of an IFR flight plan after landing.”
