Very astute observation. I agree with you. Otaku Love Story is one of the very best, and mostly unknown love stories in Anime. It's actually a believable love among young adults and very well done. All three OVAs are also excellent. Another hidden gem which you may know about is anime Emma which has nothing to do with the Jane Austen Emma. The anime Emma: A Victorian Romance in two seasons 2005 and 2007, is about a Noble in Victorian England and his love for his maid which cuts against the rules of social class. If you like your Romance with some social commentary, you will enjoy it.
