Bred back into existence from less than 100 dogs left, due to WW2 Germany bombing raids in Finland. A National Treasure in Finland that almost was lost due to our own nature. This breed makes a Border Collie look limited in their ability to learn. A breed that does everything, search and rescue, police work, hunting, and a good all around family dog. They get extremely bonded to their handler and require a life long owner since rehoming is difficult. This breed is not an apartment dog, it requires open spaces and a job to do. Twice the dog as typical domestic breeds and they require twice the work for twice the payout as a friend and satisfaction.
Very stubborn dogs , unafraid from anything ,friendly with people very loyal ,high energy, not so good with other small pets the hunting instincts kicks in fast when something runs away , u have to start to train them when they are small , i have my Karelian for 5 years best friend ever .
If the dog is off leash and puts up a chase on a grizzly bear to scare it off, how do you call the dog back to you to get it off the bear? It seems like the dog would chase the bear for miles getting lost in the woods. Is there a way to call or command the dog to come back to you after the bear starts to run off?
My KBD I never trained to hunt But he's danced with three mose and rounded them all together then got them away with from me and came back to me when he felt that they where far enough away. He's also chased black bear away. And brought me a random farmers heard of cattle when he was only 10 months old🤣
I've met a lot of KBD's all of them were awesome people dogs. The only reason why I don't have one is because I live in the city and can't provide the space for a high energy dog.:(

if one lives in a rural area known to have black bears, would you recommend a Karelian bear dog as a safety measure? ie., If you're working in the brush and a bear is nearby unbeknownst to you, will the dog make you aware of a bear and deter the bear if need be?
Isn’t it incredibly frustrating for the dogs, always near bears with centuries of breeding giving them an instinctual desire to run and bite but never being let loose to fulfill that desire

Saw one of these remarkable dogs at work in a campground along the Alaska Highway along the B.C.Yukon border. Was a sow grizzly with 2 cubs.

We use them for moose hunting.

does anyone have some advice on training this specific breed? I'm having a hard time with my karelian pup
