  • Soapy gets conditioned to various cues prior to this walk. He knows "yes" means food is coming/he's done something correct, "ah-ah" means a punishment is coming/he's done something incorrect, and "leave it" means if he leaves it I will pay him and if he doesn't I will punish him/correct him. Punishment doesn't mean be cruel to him or hurt him. It means something he find aversive, a leash correction or verbal correction works. He knows door threshold (to wait and not door blast), he can walk loose leash, unless he is reacting to a dog, he may lunge and bark. He can sit and stay until released so he has a lot of basic obedience down. We will use his obedience skills to help him overcome his dog reactivity. In this video he is working on his "look" cue, this will help him not escalate when he sees triggers. When we see dogs, we cue look to keep his eyes on his handler and off the dogs he may react to. Soapy is a Karelian Bear Dog (little GSD and Husky in there) and KBD's are considered to be dog aggressive, considering this genetic trait we will work on what works best for him to thrive in this world.

This girl is executing positive training techniques perfectly. Such a treat to watch in a phenomenal Alaskan background. Note her leash "corrections" are very gentle. Absolutely a joy to watch such perfect execution of training techniques that work!

at 21:40 is a demo of a leash correction. "Leave it" is non negotiable. My description ^ explains more details about punishment and what we are working on with Soapy. I cue "leave it" he ignored me, so I loud clapped at him, still ignored me so I applied a leash correction.

Great video! Noticed how his gait changes: sometimes cross-pattern, sometimes simple. Simple: moves same side legs together (gives him a slight ‘waddle’). Cross-pattern: left front + right rear / right front + left rear. Watch a rug-rat crawling: children develop their preferred style of ‘4-legged’ movement quite early. 😊

I had a golden retriever for 14 years, wonderful dog, so gentle and friendly with everyone including my two cats but I wish I had seen some of your training techniques when he was young.

I like that “ah-ah” is a universal don’t do that/not what I want you to do signal. Saves “No” for a firmer, and hopefully immediate, correction like in an unsafe situation.

This is a Russian European Laika. My REL Rex caught 4 types of fish, several types of birds, as well as squirrels, hares and mice.

    Wow. How nice.
Is this one of the first times you have worked with him?

no, i met him when I adopted my dog (they are siblings). Baby Soapy is in my vids at the local shelter Paws and Claws with Ekko, and Guinness too. My friend adopted him but as he matured he became reactive so we began working on some skills. I had my husband available to record me this day, it was nice out, not too windy to hear me talk. Figured I could share some tips about some useful skills I teach reactive dogs. In my description on this vid I explain some things he knows, things I worked on him with.

@@MoMountainMutts very nice. What would happen if an off leash dog came running? Do you carry something to deter another dog? ( like bear spray?)
Very good training. My girl failed the canine good citizen class because she reacted to a strange dog. When she meets other dogs she is actually better if I drop the leash and I just say be gentle. She’s a 70 lb and tall boxer. She loves to play with small dogs but scares little dogs. I think other dogs scare her. When she goes to doggy daycare she just follows the attendants around. I wish I could’ve trained her to be calm when she was young. She’s 10.5 now and is just a Velcro dog. We still work on manners, but not as often as we used to. I have the prong collar and mini trainer but can’t find the collar right now.
      Thanks for your videos.

@@sdeaglefeather I have a video of two dogs running up on me and what I did. No dogs seem to want to approach Soapy on a leash.
