silly question! if I make a hat on circular needles with the knit stitch (which is easier for me than purling) can i turn it inside out at the end to make it look like the garter stitch? or is that cheating?
+Alycia D Yeah! You can do that. But the stitch won't be garter stitch. The reverse of stockinette stitch is called "reverse stockinette stitch." So creative, right? But, basically, it differs from garter stitch in that every row is purled whereas with garter stitch, you have one row of knits and one row of purls. So the fabric is less cushy than garter stitch. But if you like it, then go for it! And if you change your mind, you can always turn the hat inside out again and have the stockinette side facing the world.
Wow. I didn't know this is actually the stockinette stitch lol. I'm only a beginner, and because I'm lazy, I'd only switch the needles and work on whatever side it is 😂
Thank you so much for these videos! My grandmother taught me how to knit, but she forgot which stitch is which. Your videos are really helping me relearn how to knit correctly!
Mind. blown. My stockinettes on two needles are always confusing me I never knew where I left off and you explained it so simply and it made perfect sense 😅 thank you so much
what happens when you accidentally purl and you should have knitted, or the opposite. how do one fix that..this is my issue. working on the big comfy sweater pattern here on you tube..I don't know what to do to fix it
The definition of beginner friendly ! For the first time in 3 years i knitted something that thanks to this video, you explained it very nicely again thank you so much 💓
You make this fun, I was kinda hating on knitting until I tried your channel. I would love if it you showed us how to hold the needles and yarn. I've never seen anyone else hold the working needle like to you and it appeals to me. Thanks!!
+junemaeven Interesting! Good suggestion! And I'm glad you no longer hate knitting. Don't hate knitting! Knitting is fun! But for a beginner it can absolutely be a bit intimidating.
I'm currently knitting my first scarf (well, first that I'm determined to not abandon until I forget how to knit). I was curious, what if I switch the purl and knit side every 10 rows or so. Would that be a nice look or will I ruin the scarf?
You can simply use circular needles as two needles. You do not have to knit them into a round. I never use straight needles...everything I knit is with round needles.
When choosing a stitch (just knit, or just purl or stockinette etc), why prefer one over the other? Why not just always do the knit stitch, for instance? I am very new to knitting...took one class and then found your channel, which has been a game-changer.
Hi Davina, so what does it mean when a pattern says "Continue on Stocking Stitch(ST) ending on the right side"? Does that mean we complete the knit row or we just complete the purl row?
Stockinette always curls when it's knit flat. However, you can knit a border around the stockinette to keep it from curling. Popular borders include garter stitch and seed stitch, which are both stitches that lay flat. To knit a garter border, for instance, knit garter stitch (knitting all rows) for 4 or 5 rows, then knit 3 stitches or garter stitch and then knit stockinette stitch until you reach the last three stitches. Then knit those 3 stitches in garter stitch. Continue in this way until your piece is the length you like. Then finish off the piece with 4 or 5 rows of garter stitch.
Yes! When knitting on two needles back and forth, you would knit one row, and then purl the next row. Knit one row, purl the next row, and on and on, alternating between a knit row and purl row. When you're knitting in the round, then to knit stockinette, you would just knit every round.
This is one of the best knitting tutorial channels.
Did you subscribe though?

this was meant to be posted on the stockinette stitch 2 ways video... sorry!

Your videos have been so great for an absolute beginner like myself. You make it so clear. Thank you so much!

I am confused. What is the point of this technique when you could just stick to one type of yarn stitch until you finish the project?

Easy- unravel that one stitch and retry again. Might cause a hole but it could work.
Your presentations are the best. I wish i have known your channel long before i taught myself to knit
Sheep * Stitch is my go to when it comes to knitting tutorials

I tried to do this stitch for a headband, and all it did was curl both sides to the middle
You do the best knitting videos out there! So clear, so simple, so well-done! Thank you!
Actually I had no idea about knitting but learnt it by watching your videos. I'm loving knitting more and more thanks to you.
I finally understand! That's why I love this channel. :)
My way of doin this is to just plain knit on straight needles and knit ambidextrous way(hard to describe tho)
I'm currently knitting my first scarf (well, first that I'm determined to not abandon until I forget how to knit). I was curious, what if I switch the purl and knit side every 10 rows or so. Would that be a nice look or will I ruin the scarf?
Do you know how to fix gutters in stockinette stich? If so, would you please make a video on it?
You can simply use circular needles as two needles. You do not have to knit them into a round. I never use straight needles...everything I knit is with round needles.
Why doesn't anybody start at the first row after cast on? I need to know if I'm supposed to purl or knit the FIRST ROW!
thanks god i found you!))
I have a question please .
How is this different from the garter stitch(on two needles, that is)?
How do you get a stockinet stitch from the circle needles? Wouldn’t it just turn into a garter stitch
When choosing a stitch (just knit, or just purl or stockinette etc), why prefer one over the other? Why not just always do the knit stitch, for instance? I am very new to knitting...took one class and then found your channel, which has been a game-changer.
Salle Huber different stitches give different textures to your knitted fabric. It depends on what you want your final outcome to be :-)
I wish "beginner friendly" videos would actually show how to start the project, not start half0way through the project and not show how to cast-on
This is a video showing stockinette stitch for beginners - how about you watch her cast on tutorial before this one
Hi Davina, so what does it mean when a pattern says "Continue on Stocking Stitch(ST) ending on the right side"? Does that mean we complete the knit row or we just complete the purl row?
I think that means you knit the knit row. You end after working the right side (knit side). That’s how I understand it
@@sheepandstitch Wow! Thank you so much for the quick reply!!
I could learn this kind of stitch only because of you !!!!! Thanks a lot 😊😊
How do you stop the edges from curling in?
Stockinette unfortunately curls. You can keep it flat by knitting a border around it. Many people like garter stitch as a border since it lays flat
I don't have v shapes from my knit stitch, just purls or both sides and I don't know why
Wait, did you get the stitches backwards? I thought that the v's are purls and the bumps are knit stitches.
i was having trouble understanding how stockinette stitches work but you explained it so well
So if you’re using long circulars for more stitches but knitting flat, still just act as if you’re knitting flat🥰 got it thank you!
Can you do a stockinette by just knitting with the right hand and then knit the next row with your left hand?
confusing as hell
Please make more videos!!! Me and my family would greatly appreciate it!
Excellent tutorial. Thanks! 😀
THANK YOU SOOO MUCHHH
this was actually really helpful thank you so much
It’s hard to believe this is 6 years old 😦😦
This is the best knitting channel, hands down 💜

Your channel is the best!!
You’re going too fast to see anything
Can you do it slow
Is there a way to prevent the stockinette stiches from curling?

Hi Davina, love love love your tutorial. Searching, searching..feeling better after all. 🥰
you go way to fast i cant understand why you did it and you have to restart what you did and you have to go slow so we can UNDERSTAND!!!!!!!!!!!
