My mind exploded as a 16 year old taken to the Sundowner hotel to see a band a neighbour loved... l had never heard of them, but he was so cute, had a car, so l went alone... it was the best band, even now, 50 odd years later... .. just watching the spoons being played, the costumes,
facial expressions, the hair, make-up and the talent that has never been surpassed... then Dallas Brooks Hall, farewell concert .. even today..after 1000s of bands, concerts... that was incredible.. long before all the stage technology of today... brilliant band.. still love the music..

Everything about early Split Enz was absolutely daring as hell.
Not only were they not concerned about making popular music, but they seemed to be deliberately committed to experimenting with anything but standard musical norms.

Yes! I've just been laughing thinking about this coming out in 1976! Just as punk rock is about to explode... Splitz Enz do the most punk thing possible and release a song referencing a pre-rock'n'roll era! They sure marched to their very own beat.

I've loved them from the beginning - there always seemed something tragi-comic about them. Saw them live a million years ago, still one of my favourite gigs ever. Still play the albums - thank you Split Enz, you take me back to happier times.

Is there anything in music quite so jolly as an Eddie Rayner piano solo?. This and the solo from “Take A Walk” always brighten the day.

As a pre teen, early teens, I laughed at these weirdo’s with their stage make up and crazy hair. Singing funny, bouncy ditties to amuse my small mind…
Then I grew up and appreciated the deep, the serious and sometimes dark storytelling of reality, hidden behind a smattering of comic relief. Amazing how time changes your perspective!

@@geoffkinna9166That's funny because i saw them in Wellington NZ in 1975. They were also on TV in NZ back then. That's before they were widely known in Australia. They started in NZ in the early 70s. It's where they originated from. Not that they recorded some songs in Australia. That was later. We do actually record songs and film stuff in NZ too. You have to be up and running as a singer / band first. Or at least moving in that direction. So you are putting the cart before the horse. Were the Seekers Australian? Is Kylie Minogue Australian!? Well in both cases they recorded a lot of their songs in the UK!

@@Metal-Possum Prog-adjacent, maybe? I was going to go with perhaps Supertramp and 10CC as similar musical bedfellows, but at the end of the day, genres are just conveniences, good music is good music at the end of the day.

Neil was mainstream.. made for radio. Early enz is just them doing vaudville and experimenting. Neil doesnt go too into the zany. He sticks to what works / hits and melodies easy to listen to. I like Neil but I appreciate the oddities of a Tim / Phil song. They change tempo's and genres. Its just wild n' wacky
