I used a punctured inner tube secured to a weight lifting belt.
We found it much easier to do if we were using a swim snorkel and if the Tube/Cord was secured up about 3-4 feet above the horizontal swimmer's level.
As stated in the video - the stretchier the tube the greater the effort to maintain your position. You are in a constant state of acceleration and the effort to maintain increases with the flex of the tube.
You can see the massive BLACK tarp I use to cover the pool in the background.
About 5 days after shooting this, the temperature rose to 17 degrees C/ 62 F - even though the air temp never got above 14/57.

Hi guys. I'm 6' 2', quite heavy build, and have the same set up as this..and it works brilliant for me, so if you are fortunate enough to have the outdoor space (& a tolerant other half!) I highly recommend 👌. Wetsuit for the cooler weather. Keep stocked up on chlorine tablets in the floater and the water lasts ages too. I just dabble in sprint tri, so this is a big help for that and my mental health too. Thanks for posting the vid..I feel good knowing I'm not the only garden swimmer 😀

@@waterwomaninFL We both found that after a fairly short adaptation phase, the stroke felt quite natural.

How would/did you measure the distance?
Would say if you have worked in a pool, you know your strokes per minute for X pace let's say 90 SPM for a 100 meters in 1:45". Just do the math and you will get X total minutes for the intended distance. It's an estimate but you'll get close.
ouch 12 degrees C! We have a 9ft by 6ft pool and I (5ft 4")can easily swim tethered in it. Its 33 inches deep. I haven't tried it with a wet suit on yet but its around 20 c at the moment (October UK)in the water once the sun's been on it for a couple of hours.
Maybe if you painted some lines in the bottom so you can see, to help you stay centered. like two black lines for your edges and a red line for your center.
Thank you so much for this. The swimming area near me is closing and I swim every day and I’m so upset about it. I’ve looked at these swim spas and they’re way too costly for my purse. I might be able to afford this though.
Yeah - once you have the pool it doesn't cost much after that - and we got this pool for under $200 CDN!

Tiffany S-D I’ve only tried freestyle. I’ll try the other 3 strokes tomorrow and let you know how it goes.
Sorry for the delay getting back to you but the pool was just too cold for me to test it out (I don't have a wetsuit that fits at moment) and my partner wasn't able to get in. But after a few warm days, I was able to get in last night and try all four strokes. No problem at all - EXCEPT to report that doing FLY was a challenge and I would not recommend it in a pool this size. It's such an aggressive stroke I thought the pool might burst at the seems! Water was sloshing out like we were going through a 7.8 earthquake. Hope that helps.

I find elastic rope or bungee as we call it in the UK is better, if you give it a good stretch when you're finished you'll get out much quicker 😂

Really need get a long pool. There inexpensive 14.75ft long x 7.5ft wide x 36in deep pools for under $300. Then have room to fully stretch and give room for momentum surge forward. If have space putting it under shed or portable garage or in a garage , carport will help keep debris out. And can heat during colder months.
I live in rural Colorado mountains with some acres, built a shed, got cheap long pool from Walmart $275 and put a wood burner sauna in the shed too , and this heats the pool area to use in cooler months .
That's taking it to the next level - and for not that much more. Well done!

3x2 m should be fine, I’m only 5’7” just wondering if 2’ deep is enough? Plus I’m trying to configure a heater?
Our pool was 30" deep. 2' would have been too shallow for me. I'm pretty sure I would touch the bottom - but of course, your wing span is the measure that counts there. I'm 5'11" and my arm length from pit to finger tip is 28".
A heater would be brilliant in my area of the world! Let us know if you come up with a cost effective solution.
was the 30 inch depth enough for an adult male? I'm 5'11, and my arm is 33 inches long .should I look for a deeper pool than 30inch?
I'm also 5'11" - just shy. I measured my arm length from Pit to Finger Tip and am 27 inches. If you've measured from the center of your chest to finger tip then I'm confident you'll be good. If I'd had an option for something even a few inches deeper I would have taken it but this was what was available and it was really affordable. The next size up was quite dear but I'm fine with this one. It's working well. The only thing is, quite a bit of water sloshes out if you swim aggressively but I just top up a bit after each session.

Looks great! Should a 366 cm by 84 cm pool be deep enough to do freestyle? i'm 197 cm my arm is 72 cm measured from the chest.I think the pool fills up to about 75 cm of water?
If your pool is 366 cm across and 84 cm deep you'll have lots of room. This pool is only 76 cm deep (which I consider an absolute minimum) and fills to about 71 cm and it's 304 cm across. I think you're good to go!
The pool is coming next week. Then ill try it! I think the pool wil fill to about 75 cm. Thx and good luck with training!

for sure - and 2-3 inches deeper would make a nice difference as well but we did this one for less than $200 so there's a cost benefit to consider and for some people there's spacing issues. In the end, I think this is the smallest you can get away with but bigger would certainly be better.

Great video / idea - do you get any issues with your lower back? I.e. swimming with the resistence focus on the back? thanks
My partner and I used the pool for about a month before the lakes got warm enough to swim in. Neither of us had any issues with our backs. To be fair we kept our swim to about 20 min in duration. Longer may have resulted in some discomfort but there was none in the time we used it.
I am 5'10 and I measure 27" as well. We got the Easy set 15 x 36 from Canadian Tire and I ordered a tether off amazon. I am hoping that its going to be ok.

We are being told that the wetsuit did, indeed, shrink since it was last worn in 2008.

This has clarified things for me as I wanted to do the same thing in my garden I mean what a dream to own a swimming popl but wasn’t really sure if a small pool would be enough without hitting the bottom or sides too much but if u can get away with only a 10ft 30” depth pool then I will go for this myself - am only 5ft7 so do u think it’ll definitely be large enough ? You mentioned using an inner tube but why not try Bungy cord to reduce acceleration? Also as it’s mostly freezing in uk the swim suit with helmet was also a great idea as I don’t want to add the expensive of using a heater as well as not using a filter but just chlorine and a vacuum cleaner and just to keep it well covered ? What do u think?
Hi Paul - at 5'7" you're not going to have any issue at all. I'm 5'11" and can swim comfortably without hitting the floor. I just used the inner tube because that's what I had on hand but I believe a bungy cord would work fine. I'm confident that the less stretch there is the easier it will be to maintain your position in the pool. The bungy cord would likely be firmer. A cover is really important in my area. I'm surrounded by trees so the pool would be a proper mess if I didn't cover it. I have a black tarp I've placed over the pool. It only took two warm days to bring the temp from 12 to 17. It's really nice to swim in now.
I see they are wearing a wetsuit. Surfers, divers, snorkelers, swimmers use wet suits. They are good to have.
What is the size of the pool? And where did you get the belt/strap? It looks like such a great idea. Thank you for this video.
Hi Ruti - the pool is 10 feet across and 30" deep. You don't want anything smaller than that. The belt I used was an old Weight Lifting support belt I had laying about. I'm pretty confident almost any kind of belt would be fine - except, of course, a leather belt. I think using something like a luggage shoulder strap would work. Good luck setting up if you intend to!

@@tellmystory7833 I'm 5'11" (not sure what my wingspan is) and my fingers didn't touch the bottom. It's important to have a pretty high elbow when swimming freestyle, so, in a way, the 30" encourages that.

@@jameshannah1184 I measured my arm length from arm pit to finger tip and I'm 27". I probably am about 2" above the floor of the pool at the lowest point of my stroke. Hope that helps.

I measured my arm length from Pit to Finger Tip and am 27 inches. If your arms are much longer than that, you'll want a pool that's more than 30 inches deep - which this one was.
