Lyrics:
See, I think drugs have done some good things for us, I really do
And if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us
Do me a favor, go home tonight and take all your albums
All your tapes and all your CDs and burn 'em, 'cause you know what?
The musicians who've made all that great music that's enhanced your lives
Throughout the years, real fucking high on drugs
Dreaming of that face again
It's bright and blue and shimmering
Grinning wide
And comforting me with it's three warm and wild eyes
On my back and tumbling
Down that hole and back again
Rising up
And wiping the webs and the dew from my withered eye
In, out, in, out, in, out
A child's rhyme stuck in my head
It said that life is but a dream
I've spent so many years in question
To find I've known this all along
So good to see you
I've missed you so much
So glad it's over
I've missed you so much
Came out to watch you play
Why are you running away?
Came out to watch you play
Why are you running?
Shrouding all the ground around me
Is this holy crow above me
Black as holes within a memory
And blue as our new second sun
I stick my hand into his shadow
To pull the pieces from the sand
Which I attempt to reassemble
To see just who I might have been
I do not recognize the vessel
But the eyes seem so familiar
Like phosphorescent desert buttons
Singing one familiar song
So good to see you
I've missed you so much
So glad it's over
I've missed you so much
Came out to watch you play
Why are you running away?
Came out to watch you play
Why are you running away?
Prying open my third eye
Prying open my third eye
Prying open my third eye
Prying open my third eye
So good to see you once again
I thought that you were hiding
And you thought that I had run away
Chasing the tail of dogma
I opened my eye
I opened my eye
I opened my eye and there we were
I opened my eye
I opened my eye
I opened my eye and there we were
So good to see you once again
I thought that you were hiding from me
And you thought that I had run away
Chasing a trail of smoke and reason
Prying open my third eye
Prying open my third eye
Prying open my third eye
Prying open my third eye
Prying open my third eye
Prying open my third eye
Prying open my third eye
Prying open my third eye
Prying open my third eye
Prying open my third eye

Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration. That we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather

Tool does a good job at capturing the weirdness and instensity of psychedelic experiences. It’s not like other psychedelic music.

@@friidryce1150 Absolutely.
I love Tool, but you must not have heard Nine Inch Nails then :)
no need psychedelic for reflection
"Third Eye" is yet another testament to TOOL's unparalleled ability to transport the listener to an alternate dimension. This track, like so many others in their discography, serves as a gateway to a higher state of consciousness, a reminder of how TOOL's music transcends the ordinary and ventures into the deeply spiritual and transformative. The intricate sonic landscapes they create - layer upon layer of complex rhythms, time signatures, and melodies - come together to form a musical architecture that feels both expansive and intimate at the same time. Each note seems to pulse with purpose, drawing you deeper into an immersive, almost meditative experience.
What truly sets TOOL apart, however, is how seamlessly their sound intertwines with their lyrical themes. In "Third Eye", as in much of their work, the lyrics are not merely words set to music; they are philosophical meditations, exploring the inner workings of the mind, the nature of existence, and the pursuit of higher knowledge. The song probes the concept of awakening, urging listeners to tap into a deeper sense of awareness - what some might call a spiritual enlightenment. This alignment of sound and meaning is where TOOL’s genius lies: they create music that not only entertains but also challenges, provokes and invites introspection.
Engaging with TOOL’s music is not a casual experience; it’s a journey. It feels as though each track offers a different path to self-discovery, inviting the listener to explore new dimensions of thought, emotion, and consciousness. The way they blend raw, primal energy with moments of quiet reflection creates a dynamic that feels almost alchemical, as if each song is designed to alter your very perception of reality. I’ve long since lost track of what fascinates me most about this band - the sheer complexity of their arrangements, the depth of their lyrics, or the profound spiritual path their music carves out - but what I do know is that no other band creates such an all-encompassing, transformative experience. TOOL’s work is a singular, unparalleled fusion of sound, meaning, and spirituality that continues to stand in a realm of its own. (3/10/2024)

People have lost the ability to truly connect to something bigger than themselves. Technology is a great thing to embrace in one's life. Used right it is most powerful Tool. Don't let it consume yourself. Everyone has a gifted talent from a greater good. And Tool helps start to come together
Have you listened it 10,000 times yet?
There is like 80% of the population who are basically lower class for different reasons a lot are brainwashed into being human cattle by the corporatocracy. Used as a labor source, in which, the profit you make from your labor goes back to the corporatocracy in a cycle of classism where the 1% who own the majority of capital retain their power and their wealth through authoritarian enforcement of a piece of paper. The plutocracy of the 1% own our government by being huge political campaign donators.
Its been setup so most people get distracted by the bread and circus, while the real decisions are made by the elite. Young people who get higher educations and want to serve the more powerful elites can one day become one themselves. But elitism usually comes from generational wealth, where the kids already have business connections and can go to private schools and universities that others can't.
But I think there is something, regardless of the class, enthicity, or culture that you come from, where some people can look deeper into reality and see truths by using critical thinking or study of history, philsophy and political science. And other people can see deeper meanings and can connect other ideas to art, while others can communicate and feel empathy for others on a superhuman level.
I personally think we are all genius, and we need to just find the thing we are really genius at doing. But a lot of the population decides to put their head in the sand and waste their potiential. Those are the people who don't allow art like Tool to touch their soul.

On October 16th of 1996 at the Glass House, a man with an unknown name requested this song be played before every song during the show. Maynard made an announcement, calling the setlist to an end, and with that, there would be no Third Eye. To the requester’s surprise, Third Eye started out of nowhere, becoming the real closing to the show.

That final solo at 11:53 is one of the greatest pieces of music that I've ever heard. It feels like not just the whole song, but the entirety of the album builds up to that final climax. If Aenima is a "cleansing of the soul" then that finale is like a sendoff, and you just feel that the catharsis is complete... leading into the next stage: Lateralus
The Salival live version of Adam's solo is even more incredible.

Wait, thats a totally new way to look at it! Essentially, the albums are stages of spirituality. Makes sense, cuz lateralus is reflecting and kundalini which is the final stage of awakening.

I’m a 16 year old female, tool has always been around me since I can remember, my parents are huge fans always talking about how insane the concerts were. For the longest time I didn’t know what was so special about their music, it was until last year that I completely consumed myself in their music and finally grew an intense interest. Once you listen to tool you’ll come to the realization, whatever I was listening to before wasn’t genuine music.
I've been listening to Tool since I was around 5 years old. Back then, Lateralus was the go-to album. We only listened to the more popular songs, like Lateralus, Parabol/Parabola, Schism, etc. I was pretty happy with it. My dad stopped listening to them for a while. Then they put their library on youtube. I started listening, and I was blown away. My dad was weirded out by how much I liked it. I really want to go to a concert now. If you read this, thank you for reading.
EDIT: I'm 13 years old.
I’m 15 and Tool has literally driven me into my mind instead of out of it. Before I listened to Tool I was just a mindless kid who thought I got stuff. Now I feel like I am actually starting to understand how much I don’t understand.

When I was younger, I discovered the psychedelic community and the idea of enlightenment. I discovered a community of people, led by certain individuals who had experienced extraordinary things through meditation. They claimed that they saw life as a dream and that the normal hardships of life that we face no longer affected them. I came to discover later that for many of these people, this "enlightened" state of being was merely temporary. As their high eventually faded, many of these people would work tirelessly and desperately to regain that transcendental perspective they once had. As time went on, they tried more and more reckless ways to induce their psychedelic states, including using some of the most potent psychedelic drugs in existence. This song is so beautiful and haunting because it makes me think of how desperately these people are trying to "pry open their third eye" to escape the dullness of our physical reality.
Thats why these substances fascinated me and horrify me

This is all drugs, your first uses are unbelievable and as you continue to use more but you don’t get the same effect causing you to use more and more until you’re all consumed with the next hit, I’ve tried almost everything back in the 90’s and but also keep in mind that you can’t stay in that state for ever and made them an entertainment value only and not get addicted. Acid and shrooms were awesome and I’ve had some mind opening experiences because of them but also knowing I had to live in reality. A lot of people can’t keep that discipline and become junkies, I’ve lost some good friends and watch it consume some to where they’ve lost everything.
Those who "pry open their third eye" are trying to ascend via "not doing their homework." Ya can't get truly there via prying it open and skippeing the heart chakra, then up through the throat (the thorax = the torus field) and then opening the third eye: is the way to the "t-root-h" and not going the fake way via skipping the heart. No skipping the heart for narcissistic psychopaths who think they can do it via drugs or "plant medicines" or drinking blood or whatever their fancy . . . nope, nope, nope !! That feel when you realize the mind is not singular, but plural. You may be CEO, but you have a board of members to satisfy. Your operation is that of a compromise. We're not encountering entities, we're encountering temperaments made manifest. There are no machine elves, merely agents of your temperaments and drives. What you are in these encounters, is the manifestation of free will. No matter what anyone will ever try to tell you, you do possess a free will. Never, ever forget that. Still to this day I remember seeing this album for sale in the stores and just being mesmerized but it’s cover.
My most intense psychedelic trip landed me in the ER when I stumbled outside and collapsed on the sidewalk. But it was not a bad trip. It wasn’t fun or comfortable but I saw SO MUCH !! I wouldn’t want to repeat it on purpose, but I treasure that experience. I had it out with “God,” I was grieving and angry, I wanted off the ride, I no longer wanted to participate in this existence. I wanted to spontaneously combust. I was shown on no uncertain terms that I was utterly powerless and along for whatever “God” has in store for me, like it or not. It was priceless. Ah, yes……..life. It’s a tough planet !!

Great job! Although I am a little confused by your choice of song...
I've been sober for almost four months so far, it was actually APCs Thirteenth Step album that I carried with me at a point in time when I was over here abusing the stuff. I drunk all my life, but it became a problem when I turned 21 and could get my hands on it anytime that I wanted, lasted nearly a year and now I am 22 and clean. Every now in then I'll get these intense cravings where my mind feels literally hungry, emptied and hollowed out, contracted and wrapped in a wired feeling. Keep it up man.
What a way to end an album
Honestly my favorite song of theirs, such a fucking musical Odyssey. Knowing how the new album is gonna be 7 tracks at 85 mins and realizing it'll be around this length for every track has me hyped
totally. And they could have easily ended it with Ænema! Most bands probably would have, but Tool's like, "oh yeah, we have this song that's even more epic than Ænema!"
and what a way to start the next one: lateralus! for me, this song prepare the way to their next album lateralus..
last song sucks
this is the type of shit i found lacking in their latest release. Considering they take about a decade to form a new album it feels really shitty how bland and uninspired the last one feels. Sure its good. just not the godlike quality they've released earlier, like this par exemple.
Ill give it another listen to not judge it to quickly but this song is stupendous, transcendental, genius. If i have to give the album another chance to "realize" it might have something similar, i fear my motivation is self-delusion and wishful thinking. This one stuck right away in a way nothing from Fear Inoculum did...
7:12 is by far my favorite part of this entire song. It’s melodic almost makes me want to fall asleep peacefully and think about the stars and planets and moons and many other things

After looking up the setlist for the show I'm speaking about.....they never played third eye. I could have sworn. Lol. Either way, it was the greatest live performance I've ever seen musically.
2003, my first listen to the album as a whole. The night after Christmas, my first as a teenager. Adult Swim is marathoning Cowboy Bebop. Third Eye plays during the Heaven's Gate culty episode. Strobe light going max shutter.
Not understanding the concepts being conveyed under the music, not familiar with Bill Hicks or how much a hack Dennis Leary was.
I listened to this whole song wondering if it was gonna be like Disgustipated (it's less sophisticated older brother). I was mistaken.
This song single-handedly changed the way I listen to music. This was an experience and was practically responsible for turning me into one of those obnoxious, snobby Tool fans who thought they figured the world out, lol. This broadened my horizons. This opened up an avenue I didn't know existed. Tool came before I started fanatically collecting Faith No More and Layne-era Alice in Chains material.
I thought about this song having a conversation with my ma. She grew up with Syd Barrett, I had Maynard. I cited this song as what I imagined played in Syd's head.
Just sharing my nostalgia.

There's something about the melody at 11:02 (and other parts of the song) that I can't put a finger on that's satisfyingly mesmerizing.

Beautiful indeed
That chorus with the instrumentsls is indeed mesmerizing, almost like a holy chant .

That's fine, but I recommend you avoid smelling the tetrahedral molecular shape, as that is what methane's molecular geometry is.

Probably my favorite song from Tool. This whole album is, to me, a snapshot in time.. to where I was.. and what I was doing. I can't ever properly explain this time and place to anyone not a 20-something back in late 90s to very early 2000s. I was 19 when this album came out. I have never since heard an album so polarizing.
The day this album came out my friends and I dropped lsd and exploded our minds into a million dimensions. One of the best trips of my life!
Tool is the greatest band ever. 1000%. But if u ever drop LSD again do yourself a favor and turn lights off,lay back and crank the song release from Pearl Jam. I love tool to death but had to send u this when I read your comment. Listen to tool aswell a million times but just slide this one in quick at intermission or something. 15th Tool show lastnight in Buffalo 2022

Pure awesomeness.

Grew up on Maynard’s music because of my dad and I’m addicted to how to it makes me feel spiritually. I didn’t remember this song but my dad told me to put it on tonight while having a fire and it has been on repeat for over an hour. We also checked out you winery today Maynard and HELL YEAH.

A great Tribute to the underrated Bill Hicks! Best stand up comedian ever, hands down! Thanks Tool!
God this CD has impeccable structure, every transition makes perfect sense and this song really nails the hypnotic nature they were aiming for. This song along I could listen to on repeat for hours.

This song provokes so much emotion, this album and lsd saved my life.
This entire album has a place in my heart far above all others. My older brother got me listening to tool in 95 when I was in the third grade. AENIMA has been my favorite album of all music since the beginning.
Only in the last few months, following my own spiritual awakening did I finally gain true understanding of the lyrics of this song. I always thought I understood tools music, but I realize now that I never did until recently. I mean REAL understanding, having been there myself. It's crazy that I'm finding new spiritual meaning in almost all of the things that have always been my favorites, books, movies, art, music.... My soul knew secretly all along, the answers were always right in front of me. The ego is the big snooze...
Yea I had the same thing happening after my self actualisation. Bill hicks (RIP - close friend of TOOL) was the catalyst for me
This song blows my mind every time I listen to it. The whole album actually. I love this band with a passion beyond mortal measurement ❤️🔥
It is fact.. quite brilliant

Awesome. Me too. No one compares.
Love posts like this, it makes me feel like less of a psycho for liking a band as much as I do, thank you.
Greatest guitar solo of any Tool song ever.
This song probably contains the bare and ultimate truth and best short definition about existence through the words of Bill Hicks at the intro.. " that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration"
"That we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively"
"There is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves"… and then a sexy humourous add on.. here’s Tom with the weather…
The Cosmic Giggle
been working on a bloodborne amv to this. i was once tripping on acid and fighting the orphan of kos to this song...needless to say i had to put the controller down and go outside for some air.
That’s dope
The orphans are annoying as HELL
Undertow was the warm up for Ænima. Ænima was the warm up for Lateralus and 10,000 Days (sister albums, peak TOOL IMO), and Fear Inoculum was the reunion ceremony culminating all things Tool and showing the alternative progressive metal and rock scene as a whole that they will be sorely missed and will never be replicated or topped. Tool was a perfect artistic statue stuck in a hunk of rock and Maynard and his fellow band mates simply had the right chisels to uncover the beauty, the mood that had always been there.
Amazing song from one of the greatest bands of all time. We finally see the day where Tool joins the streaming world. What a treat.

I am 62 years and really like their style! METAL FOREVER!!
It's a shame Prog Metal is such a small niche. I'm 62 now myself btw.
You might like a band called Porcupine Tree. In Absentia and Deadwing are both great albums. They're a bit more proggy than Tool, and their earlier stuff is more proggy than they became over time, but most people that like one of these bands like the other as well. ✌🏼
PS: like Tool, their drummer is a drummer's drummer. Highly respected in that arena...
this song is such a masterpiece

This has to be my favorite tool song of all time. Let alone how complex this song was on everyone in the bands part, but just the way it comes together and how trippy it is
This is a fucking treat for me. I grew up in this decade. Somehow I missed out on Tool. I grew up on Metallica, Danzig, and Sepultura. I recently became really good friends with someone who shares similar musical tastes as me and he's always talking about Tool, his favorite band of course. I'm just starting to go through all their releases for the first time man it's fucking wild dude. I've listened to their demo, Opiate, Undertow, and now this. Aenima so far is the best man. But I've enjoyed every song off everything I've heard so far. I'm so happy. I just had to share this.
It just keeps getting better

[Spoken by Bill Hicks:]
See, I think drugs have done some good things for us, I really do. And if you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favour: go home tonight, take all your albums, all your tapes and all your CDs, and burn 'em. 'Cause you know what, the musicians who made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years... real fucking high on drugs.
Today young men on acid realise that all matter is purely energy condensed into a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There is no such thing as death. Life is only a dream within the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather.
It's not a war on drugs, it's a war on personal freedom is what it is, OK. Keep that in mind at all times. Thank you.
Dreaming of that face again.
It's bright and blue and shimmering.
Grinning wide
And comforting me with its three warm and wild eyes.
On my back and tumbling
Down that hole and back again
Rising up
And wiping the webs and the dew from my withered eye.
In... out... in... out... in... out...
A child's rhyme stuck in my head.
It said that life is but a dream.
I've spent so many years in question
to find I've known this all along.
"So good to see you.
I've missed you so much.
So glad it's over.
I've missed you so much
Came out to watch you play.
Why are you running away?
Came out to watch you play.
Why are you running?"
Shrouding all the ground around me
Is this holy crow above me.
Black as holes within a memory
And blue as our new second sun.
I stick my hand into the shadow
To pull the pieces from the sand.
Which I attempt to reassemble
To see just who I might have been.
I do not recognize the vessel,
But the eyes seem so familiar.
Like phosphorescent desert buttons
Singing one familiar song...
"So good to see you.
I've missed you so much.
So glad it's over.
I've missed you so much.
Came out to watch you play.
Why are you running away?"
Prying open my third eye.
Prying open my third eye.
Prying open my third eye.
Prying open my third eye.
So good to see you once again.
I thought that you were hiding.
And you thought that I had run away.
Chasing the tail of dogma.
I opened my eye
I opened my eye
I opened my eye
I opened my eye and there we were.
I opened my eye
I opened my eye
I opened my eye
I opened my eye and there we were.
So good to see you once again
I thought that you were hiding from me.
you thought that I had run away.
Chasing a trail of smoke and the reason.
Prying open my third eye.
Thank you for the lyric
