Just some possibilities with the Yamaha SY 77 I hope you will enjoy this new video. More info about me at: www.damianodellatorre.com info@damianodellatorre.com
Very good use of pure presets, well adjusted sound quality of this demonstration clip! I am still today a prudent owner of SY77 and it is a sort of flagship in my music lab, still unbeatable by other newer keyboards around, sounding fat and cool among their tracks in studio. It was a crossroad in Yamaha's development of sonic architecture, but still keeps the attractivity of meeting old and new, making possible achieving fat analogue tones as well as brand new multidimensional patches travelling left-right, up and down in time...
Lovely demo! I love my SY77, eats all the DX stuff I had back then for breakfast. Funny how people reject it purely because it doesn't say 'DX' on the face. Closet classic!
I guess the DX has other sounds and more. of that instant 80s flavour used on countless of hits. Maybe that has somethng to do with it? I honestly don't know the Sy77 enough, which is why Ii am heree 😁
fantastic playing and patches! i love this synth, can sound so incredibly huge and, well, 'analog', even without the effects engine at all, and only using the AFM elements. being able to put feedback on any operator makes it amazing compared to a standard DX7 architecture, and then of course you can stack elements. i just looked at the element panning command recently, also makes for some very nice stereo field effects.
The fact that most of the people are focusing on the sample based engine, makes that synth very underated... With a couple of FM operators you can make a very nice analog like sounds, with an external effects unit you can achieve great results. Great sound engine, great filters, great keyboard, nice feel. That's a synth
I agree with you too. But the fact is, not all musicians dare to tweak or edit their synths for maximum possibilities, and they are often found in many unskilled or semi-skilled musicians. Many of them are prefer to enjoy what they have and just simply playing, and that's why they prefer the sampled sounds rather than waveform based synths, which is actually awesome for creativity.
@@MichaelSouhoka That's true , but it's not the reason that sy77 isn't frequently preferred anymore. Most of the people are seeing that synth as rompler but it has a so powerfull FM engine. It had the most powerfull FM engine on a key-synth(not considering the fs1r) before montage came to the market. But (maybe) there is the key : even skilled synthesizer players do not mess up with sy77 because of its difficult to program engine, that's also a reason why sy77 is not preferred and indeed I also find it sometimes restricted and so confusing to program, . But if someone could get into it's philosophy , he could get much from it. There are pros and cons , for its second hand price I think they are totally worth it.
Your demo puts all of mine to shame. I just pulled out my SY77 after a long hiatus and 1) it feels better than almost any other synth I own, 2) it sounds better than most synths I own, 3) it surprisingly isn't that hard to create patches - because almost anything you do sounds good in it (even the crazy high frequency sounds). It is just an incredibly amazing synth. I'm sure I'd love the SY99, but it's not what I have. Also, the worst part for me is that adjusting the cutoff frequency with the mod wheel is not done in real time. That's a big shame! Oh well, such a lovely synth, and great playing.
Thank you so much! the funny thing is that I bought this synth because I saw your videos of it in the past!! Very please to meet you! You've really good teste for music!!
@@DamianoDellaTorre888 Aw, hey that's awesome. I'm glad I inspired you to pick it up! You've done a better job with it for sure! Came back again today to listen to you play.
Thank you Sonny! yes I release a lot of music 🙂 you can check my web site www.damianodellatorre.com , or just google me with my name: Damiano Della Torre, I'm really happy you enjoyed this video! I'm just having fun with instruments! Have a beautiful day! Damiano
Beautiful playing! Are these all stock patches? You have convinced me to buy this synth! I have one locally for sale for $350. It’s pretty beat up cosmetically but it all works.
@@DamianoDellaTorre888 Could you please share with me the patches you have? (downloaded or edited by you) How do you set the patches on the SY-77? Do you use a special program or just use a floppy disk? It would be wonderful if you could share everything you can about this synthetizer. Thanks. :D
I have one and wish I had the where with all to fix the issues with it:, a non-stop hum, and weakness on one of the stereo channels. There's an issue with the LCD possibly. What have you 77 owners out there done for repairs to yours?
Hi Matt, I'm really sorry but I cannot help you with it, I'm sure someone has the answer for your questions, one thing I can tell you about the hum and the weakness of one channel is to clean all the internal connections, sometimes it can help, have a great day!
Do you have a blue LCD? Or the original? I know there’s a cable that could be removed that stops that hum, easy to access as well. Like you could stop it by just opening the bottom.
@@DamianoDellaTorre888 thanks for the reply! :) so you're a natural! I'm learing the keys a bit recently but I guess its a long way to go! I hope to be able to come just a bit closer one day maybe, your playing is a pleasure to watch

The acoustics in that room must be totally rad!
haha! yes it is! especially for acoustic instruments 🙂 thank you for your comment! have a great day!

Your playing fits the room perfectly. Lovely.
Hehe!! I agree! Thank you so much Steven! 🙂
Beautifull house! And beautifull synth of course.

Was planning to sell my SY77 but this video made me decide to keep it. 😊 Thanks Mr Keys.
Very cool! I hope you can enjoy it for a long time now! Thank you so much for your comment!
Great synthesizer, had one myself back in the day, including Roland JUNO 106, D10, Korg M1 and Yamaha SY 55 as well!
Great instruments!!

Man, that patch at 18:58 paired with the way it’s played gives goosebumps! You got a new follower! Do you release any music?

Real FM Synthesizing!
monstrous sounds gona start using my sy77 more even sounds lime ppgwave at times crazy powerfull synth like dx7 on steroids 😊
I wonder what it would be worth now if they had named it "DX77."

Well! I'm really happy I inspired you! it is really a good instrument 🙂
Some of the patches are internal and some downloaded from internet and edited by me a little bit!

min 18:57 patch was amazing... mind to share? I can give you lots of great patches too...
do you have any particularly favourite scales for improvisation?
Hi there, I'm not sure if I have any favourite scale, I just take inspirations from the sound of the keyboard 🙂

6:45 Preset name?
Sounds like an OB 9:30 & 13.30 !
I agree!! 🙂
pls how do i transpose on the yamaha sy77?
You can only do this in the “common” section, there is a transpose section, I believe it only goes 12 semitones both ways.
Not a quick way to do it.
lush organ sound at 3:20mins
I agree! it remind me when I used to play in Italian church many year ago! 😅😇
Please, look for a sound called “lips” and do the all that she wants, Ace of Base riff ! 😁
