  • This review compares the sounds of a DX7, TX81z, SY35 and SY77 side by side. Over 20 years was spent creating the Off The Matrix patches, so the review will reveal the true strengths of each of the instruments. The first part will be a demonstration the DX7, TX81z and SY77 playing the same patches. To my surprise the TX81z sounded better for a couple of the patches. The video will cover the strengths of the TX81z and SY35 over the DX7. The video will end with demonstrations of the SY77 patches as well as the new SY99 samples. A TQ5 was used to play the TX81z patches, so through much of the video the SY35 is playing the TX81z patches.
    The sounds can be found at www.offthematrix.net/shop

    My Jason Mysteria song "Crimes" was recorded entirely on the SY77 using only on-board presets (except for some drums). 🤙

      Hi, I wondered if you used a SY77 or SY99. I find it convenient that I can have FM and samples in one synth. If you don't know, Sector 101 makes card that hold custom samples in the SY77.

    Maybe I am the only one but I still liked the raw old school sounds of the DX7 best.

    I bought a PAIR of TX81z's back in 1989 (so I could have STEREO). I always heard they were a bit above and more capable then the DX-7. I think that is true!

    WOW! It used to annoy me when the purest claimed the DX7 sounds better, as my TG-77, in my mind, blows it away, but here the acoustic/electro mechanical instruments sound most realistic on the DX while the others are simply clearer/brighter. That 'Old Rhodes' patch actually sound like an old Rhodes on the DX7! I need theses for my TG-77 ASAP! Incredible work!

    I have the SY77. Love it! But i may add the SY35 as it sounds amazing in this video, wearing a decent pair of headphones

      I used the SY35 for the entire soundtrack for this video but people don't seem to realize it because the synth is not in the title; ua-cam.com/video/zIm3Y-Hvv5s/v-deo.html

    Yamaha should have offered upgrade kits for the DX7. With more RAM and ROM and slighty modified LFO and OPS chips, the DX7 has the capabilty for more Algorithms with 2 feedbacks, layering, stereo, wider LFO range, performance parametrers, and sustain with voice change. Some of the Analog output stages in the DX7 have hints that stereo was considered at one point. DX7s are relatively low cost these days. With a KX88 master MIDI keyboard, you can effectively have that fatter sound just like a DX1 with 2 DX7s. The Nyquist sample frequecy of the DX7 is about 44kHz to get 0 to 22kHz human hearing range. But it could cut that value in half and get 0 to 11kHz stereo if you don't mind the high end being cut off for the voice - which will still sound great. There is an analog audio mux in the DX7 that just sums both paths together - but if one path was given a separate output stage, stereo would be a just software change away.

      Your are very knowledgeable! If the DX7 had 2 feedbacks, it would be a great advantage. Feedback is important for analog synth emulations.

      @@offthematrix5310 I agree. I am pretty good at creating voices from scratch - doing all that through one parameter on the display at a time was cumbersome but it is all we have. I designed my own GUI to program my DX7 from a PC via MIDI. I have a video on it. Brian Eno is a master at programming the DX7. Yes, just having one feedback in the DX7 Algorithms was limiting. If they just added a 2nd feedback register in the OPS chip, they could have done that 2nd feedback anywhere in the algorithm with little software effort. I tried to make a Crash and Ride cymbal but there are just too many treble vibration modes to reproduce them well. If I had a few more operators and some more feedback paths that would be possible. But for bass, the DX7 is superior.

    Thank you for making this!
    Question: I have an SY77 and was looking at a TX81z but I'm sure not sure how much overlap there is between the two synths? Basically, if the TX81z can do things my SY77 cannot, I'd be looking to get it.
    But I don't know the case. Any insight would greatly be appreciated

      Sorry I didn't see your question last week. SY77 can really do everything a TX81z can do. So there no advantage to the TX81z except the patches that are unique to it. Although Off The Matrix SY77 patches covered much of that range.

      Don't forget the TG77!…The rackmount version of the SY77…I still have mine from 1992 and it's still a beast. Nothing until the Montage could match it for FM+SS combined.

    Hi, i have a SY99 that I love, and i would like to load samples in it, but I don't have any samplers to create the loops, do you know a software on windows that could do it ?

    • @offthematrix5310
      @offthematrix5310  Рік тому

      The program SY Factory may be able but I'm not sure. There is a lot of samples for the SY99 from Off The Matrix.

    I have being trying to dial up TX81z patches on a TG77, but the Lately and Electric basses just sound brassy 😢 there's like weird mid rangy fuah sound that just won't go away

    • @offthematrix5310
      @offthematrix5310  3 місяці тому +1

      When you say dial up on the on TG77, I guess you mean program the patch for it. Maybe the envelope is too long for a modulator. A patch like the Lately bass was programed for the TG77 in the Off The Matrix bank. You will find it at the site.
