  • In this special episode, Kaitlyn and Skye are joined by the co-hosts of the Church Politics podcast, Justin Giboney and Chris Butler, to discuss the fallout from last week’s presidential debate. Will President Biden drop out? What does the Supreme Court’s ruling about presidential immunity mean for a possible second Trump term? And why have both political parties nominated candidates who are demonstrably incapable of fulfilling the presidential oath of office? It’s a wide-ranging conversation about the broken state of American politics and where Christians can find hope.

Biden has been very poor on the economy for many people as evidenced by the skyrocketing home prices and grocery bills, and very poor on foreign policy as evidenced by Middle East chaos and Ukraine invasion . Our recent inflation is corporate greed that was kicked off by supply chain issues brought about by a global pandemic that your wannabe dictator horribly mismanaged. Do you think it's a coincidence that these big companies have been seeing record profits since we started to recover from the pandemic and get back to normal?
The current events in Israel, Palestine, and Ukraine are a result of Trump's actions. Trump recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is a stated motivation for Hamas attacking them on October 7th. Also, Trump leaked Israeli intelligence to Russia (can't say if it was intentional, but it was bad regardless), which may well have spread to Hamas and helped them plan the attack.
As for Ukraine, Trump paid lip service to criticizing Russia not did little to actually curtail them or their interests. He lifted sanctions against them and was very reluctant to impose new ones. He did nothing to counter Russia after the Kerch Strait incident. He spent his whole term undermining NATO and making Putin confident that they wouldn't meaningfully aid Ukraine if they were invaded.
There are only two reasons to vote for Trump: he'll be a personal benefit to you if he's elected (he owes you a favor, you'll get a position in his administration, etc...), or you're ignorant.

I'm kinda disappointed that Skye just quickly dismissed third party candidates. Chris was trying to make the point that this two party system has been getting worse and we should start rethinking letting it persist. because we use first-past-the-post instead of any kind of real majority system mathematically the only thing a third party can really do is displace one of the two parties. that has happened. though the modern system one of the two parties will likely absorb the third party. that's a big part of how we got trump in the first place. 2016 was a banner year for third party voting. I think one of the main reasons we are at the place that we are now is due to our unsatiable addiction to opposition politics, or what Justin calls negative partisanship. It is far easier to engage in politics based upon my opposition to the other than positive visions forward. Both democrats and republicans are very guilty of tilling and fertilizing the soil of opposition politics because it is politically expedient.
Personally, I think some of the most disastrous and detrimental policy decisions of my life have come in the name of "resisting Trump".

The enormous transfer of wealth from the lower and middle class to the wealthy and largest corporations due to shuttering small businesses is enormous and something that gets very little airtime. This was a really good episode for the most part. However there was one part that kinda shocked me. It is important to look at both sides and see what each is doing right or wrong, and I'm not one of these guys that will complain any time someone says the phrase "both sides..." but when Skye said Democrat politicians supporting Biden even though he's too old is the same hypocritical behavior as Republican politicians supporting Trump even though he's morally bankrupt and corrupt, I was baffled. Republicans supporting Trump after he tried to stay in office even though he lost, lying to his base until they got so riled up they attacked, paying off an adult film start to stay quiet about their affair, having a plan to input only loyalists in any government position he can, is the same thing as trying to have a united front behind an old guy so that first guy doesn't have a chance to come in and perhaps do worse than he's already done? It's like so many people have told them that "both sides-ing" is bad that Skye has just dug his heels in and refused to see any difference even when the difference is clear.

At the 43:50 mark, Skye asks THE QUESTION: ‘What’s it gonna take for everyone to step up and say collectively what everyone knows to be true?’ I think the answer is “The Church”. In part, this is why Jesus prayed for unity in his Church, because the way forward is understanding that there will always be disagreements when it comes to political issues, party platforms and political candidates with Christians. And so, we must listen to people who don’t experience the world the way we do; be a student and not just a critic (my worldview isn’t perfect); never burn a relational bridge over a political point of view (the person beside me is more important than my political view - John 13:34). The Church still has influence, but we have much to learn.

Good morning from the sizzling hot SF Bay Area. Thank you for this complex and insightful discussion. My heart is breaking over this constellation of terrible choices. I have never, and probably will never, vote for a Republican. I grew up in a large Evangelical clan, my father and grandfather were ministers, but I saw from a very young age the church had precious little to do with Jesus' teachings, so I took a different spiritual path. The fact that so many Christians, including many in my family, found it acceptable to vote for that malignant man defies all that I was taught to revere, the Golden Rule, the Beatitudes.
I think Skye's summation at the end to vote with the world in mind is an excellent barometer. The Malignant One will be a dictator from day one, he will pull us out of NATO so he can join with Putin and his other dictator pals. There is plenty of reason to be afraid. Jesus did not return to save us from WWII and millions of people died. You cannot live your life in hopes that he will magically save us from the decisions we make today. Use your eyes, your ears, your God given intelligence, your faith, and all the faculties that you have been given to act in a righteous way. Blessings.

I watched a clip of Bannon on his podcast interviewing one of the authors of Project 2025 from the Heritage Foundation. Bannon had a glint in his eye and his affect was jovial as he talked about his delight at putting wounded veterans and the disabled into camps within the first 180 days if Trump is re-elected. The HF guy had a flat affect, much like Stephen Miller. Both seem aroused at the thought of rounding up the disabled and wounded.
Bannon lauded the tactics of Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Ceausescu, Orban and others. He described the methods. Local, loyal MAGA police, on routine traffic stops would harass everyday citizens by threatening them with jail time if they didn’t give up the names of disabled or “illegals” they knew. This tactic would terrify many to the point that most would succumb and turn in the names of illegals and disabled they knew. This happened in the USSR,, The 3rd Reich, Italy, Hungary, Russia now, etc.
Kaitlyn talks about not being apocalyptic. The tactics have been used in history and they are being used now. Talk about not seeing with our own eyes what is happening and what can happen within the first 180 days of a Trump 2nd term is NUTS.

@@averageuser4367 the "fascist" claim is a Democratic scare tactic and not verifiably true--whereas, mental decline is something plainly seen. Its time to take the keys of the car away from gramps and send him to the retirement home for good---but gramps doesn't want the keys of the car taken from him. @@impalaman9707 let's just say that what you're saying about scare tactics is true. Scare tactics have been the bread and butter for the Republican party since at least Reagan ("welfare queens").
Yes, Reagan had the showmanship and charisma to sell fake solutions to problems that he made up or exaggerated, but both Bushes didn't.
The modern day Republican party has quadrupled down on fear mongering. What does that say about them? That they know that they're not popular enough to win on their own merits? That they know that the only way they can win is to make up or exaggerate a bunch of problems and sell fake solutions all over again?
All of this would explain why the Republican party has won exactly one popular vote since Bill Clinton became President. That's why they're so desperate to win and use Project 2025 to transform the government into an autocracy while they still can. Their policies are unpopular and becoming more and more unpopular with every younger generation. Can we talk about this problem with men shaping their identities around their jobs - which are “passing them by”? In what way are jobs passing men by? Because women are now a major part of the workforce.
Can we pause there for a moment? What, exactly, is the solution to some men being passed by for jobs because more women are working - is it to tell women they can’t work or is it to tell men that their identity isn’t in their job? Men are upset that it’s harder for MEN to find a job because WOMEN are working. Can we see how absurdly skewed and entitled that attitude is? Many women WANT to work, just as men do. According to Ezekiel, Sodom was destroyed for a number of sins that are all too often ignored by conservative evangelicals. Homosexuality wasn't specifically referred to in the passage.
At most, homosexuality can be read into being referred to by "abominable things", but this is an assumption that's not warranted by the context. Lots of things were said to be "abominable" in the Law, including not keeping to a kosher diet. That word isn't a synonym for homosexual. Also, just because something was described using that word, that doesn't mean that it's still sinful today.
The story of Sodom and Gomorrah focused on the attempted gang rape of angelic visitors, an act of extreme violence and inhospitality. Rape is sinful and deplorable regardless of the sex or gender of those involved. If the men of Sodom were trying to break into Lot's house to rape his daughters, surely that wouldn't be seen as being innocent or good.
Furthermore, Genesis 18 emphasized the faithfulness and hospitality of Abraham, making it an additional contrast with the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. Hospitality was of great importance in the Ancient Near Eastern culture, and is still very important in non Western cultures to this day.
The literary and historical context of Genesis 19 points to the fact that homosexuality wasn't the sin that was being condemned. In fact, in using this passage to attack homosexuals, you're committing the very sin that the passage was written to condemn.

Anti-abortion laws, like other types of prohibitions, are largely ineffective. Abortion will never, ever be completely stopped. The best way to reduce them is to prevent them at their source: unwanted pregnancies. The problem is that the Republican party, as well as many of their voters, aren't interested in actual solutions. Trump was so awful that Dems felt they HAD to win, and that meant nominating a candidate that could appeal to some % of Republicans... old white Christian man who has been right of center. This was a huge mistake because it drags the party right and alienates the actual left. They should have gone left and get people who do not participate to come out and vote, the same way the Rs leaned completely into bigotry, they were able to get the people on the right who had not been participating, to come out and vote.
