I literally think that Cemetery Gates is the best song ever recorded. It has everything that you would ever want in a song. Whatever Phil was doing that day, everything just worked out perfectly. I really do not think there will ever be anything that compares to Pantera.
Pantera is one of the most influential bands to come out of the 90's, we will never see a band like that again for another 100 years most likely lmao, Phils vocals, Dimes guitar (imo the best guitar sound ever made), Vinnies equally as influential drum sound and the heaviness of Rex's bass, there's no way any band will ever be as close to that for like I said another century. Metal will always be alive, it just evolves and adapts. Pantera will always be one of my favourite bands no matter what else comes around. My kids are gonna defo know about pantera that's for sure.

Hello Chris. I've been studying singing for 7 years and just now I'm getting this kind of stuff right. And the reality is that you have it right, except that people like Anselmo and Russell Allen play a ton with... My English is not good enough to express this... They project their voice, with the same technique you are applying, a little bit inwards, opening the throat, taking the soft palate up, playing with pitch all the time and sometimes even more than notes, and all the time leveling the nose. If you do that cracked head voice and apply those things you will feel how more air goes through and that is a much more similar sound. As always, loved the vid. Have a good one👍
Finally, our prays were heard. Excellent video and perfectly explained. I always had Phil in one of the most talented singers, but now I realised that is a little more complicated than I thought, and that amazes me. Keep it up, Chris!
The fact that you can hear exactly what singers do and peel back the mix, the effects, doubling and whatever else they use , is amazing. Add the detailed descriptions on how to do it, that makes you super cool in my book!
So glad you enjoy the process :) I certainly enjoy making the videos and learning from these singers... The most fascinating and fun thing I get to do!
It goes with the concept of getting it right at the source - if you can nail it, even before the recording phase, then anything in the mixing and using FX phase will only compliment it! (If done correctly, of course.) If you -rely- on the FX and "fix it in the mix" is your motto, then that is definitely the wrong approach.
This is so interesting. I knew The Kid was an amazing singer and performer, but I didn't realize just how complicated it is and how intentional he's got to be to get those qualities to his sound. You definitely know it's Phil when you hear him!
Very informative & cool video. Man you really held your own on “I’m broken” especially considering how hard Phil’s vocals are compressed via FX compression. To add to your point about not being that loud: I’d heard from a studio engineer (on UA-cam, I don’t know him) who worked on Far Beyond Driven and he mentioned how Phil was never “that loud.” Without going into specifics he also mentioned some recording trickery to help push his vocals over the edge as it were.
Really working on my mixed voice and I was able to get pretty close to Phil's E5 after about 3 times of watching this and practicing, this is awesome. Going to keep pushing it see if I can hit that G# next. I love your videos Chris, you're just awesome and interesting to watch, I'm never bored or want to skip anything in your videos. Thanks for all the great content
Absolutely amazing. Phil is one of those few underrated metal singers that everybody's like "Hah, I can do that, I can sing like him no problem", then you say "please do" and after 5 seconds you just burst out laughing because they sound like crap lol. But you're right. We can definitely take his techniques and apply on our own voices. Great video as always! Cheers

At around the 8 minute mark when you start talking about his high range screams, they sound more to me like that flourish that soul singers do than what you describe. Trying to replicate it, it kinda feels like a high pitched growl (is that a False Cord Technique?) as opposed to a vocal break.
The vocal break technique does use the false cords as well. Just slightly different resonance

This is amazing, you are incredible and this was the best vocal lesson that I ever watched. I singed a lot in my school choir, and musical college... but never got the confidence to call myself a singer. I would always hide myself behind the guitar, so I could sing and play poorly and call it a day. This gonna sound cheesy, but your channel is giving me everything I need to finally fullfill my dream of being the lead singer of my band (that I don't have yet). Doing the heaven's work, much love from Brazil
I've been singing for heavy rock bands for over 20 years and have to say I've made more progress in the last year once I discovered your channel than I have in decades. Mainly in regards to learning to use mixed voice to reach notes I thought were out of my range, as well as true pitch screaming (something I was told before was harmful to your voice). Another great video here! One I'd like to see would be Björn Strid from Soilwork. Listening to the high and aggressive notes he hits on the chorus of a song like "Sick Heart River" seems right in line with the techniques you demonstrate.
Fuck! I am doing screaming (clean too) vocals for about 20 yrs, and when I try to do it, it comes with "clean" fry or false cord. I am here by accident (YT stream od conciousness). Very inspiring, I have to try in later! Hailz from Poland!
Hi Chris, Great Video again, Phil is an amazing singer, clean, low, high and brutal screams, Thanks for making this one! Suggestions would be Sebastian Bach (Skid Row (Quicksad Jesus, most amazing scream to the outro guitar solo) and his solo CD Angel Down (that song has amazing vocals and screams). Sebastian is the king of clean and distortion vocals, would love to see an indept video about him and discover how his voice works, to be putting it more into my own voice
Amazing job articulating the principles to achieve what Phil is doing. Great singers are one in a million. Just an FYI, for ‘I’m Broken’ he’s saying ‘That’s how’ not ‘control’. Cheers.
Hi, Chris, here's a random question: do you feel like weightlifting has negative impact on vocal box tightness? Personally, after a heavy workout, I feel my voice tighten up a lot; and if I have some vocal practice later, I need to spend at least 20-30 minutes to "uncork" the voice. I've gotten rather decent with distorted singing, but typically can't produce a good relaxed distortion out of the blue without a warmup beforehand. On the other hand, during the weekend, when I practice 2 days in row and don't lift in between, I find that the "readiness" of the voice carries over from Saturday to Sunday. Can you relate?
Honestly, I feel like weight lifting (with the right mindset) has been a HUGE help to my body awareness, the ability to release tension, and the ability to focus my mind where it needs to be to get the right sensations. But you have to do it in the right way or it absolutely can work against you. I think I may actually do a full course on it for the spring... cause a lot of people have asked about this very thing.
I don't know if anyone's suggested this before, but Fair To Midland's vocalist is just phenomenal, a reaction to the song Musical Chairs would be a great video!
Everyone's born with their own true voice no matter how hard you sing you'll never sound like phil now you can sound similar but will never be the same
Make one on Ivan Moody from Five Finger Death Punch. Incredible power in both clean singing and screams, beatiful low pitched tone, I think there's a lot of interesting stuff anout him and in some cases it's different from all singers you've done before.
I too requested Ivan Moody but, Ivan says Phil Anselmo was a great singing influence for him, would Ivan Moody be **that** **different** from this Phil Anselmo upload? They sound similar af ( especially, Pantera, rather than Down ) but idk.
So the legends were true after all... Also I was thinking if you could do a video on "Ticks & Leeches" from Tool, it's not my favorite Tool song but has a very aggressive singing.
Reverend Maynard: Hope this is what you wanted. Me: Yes, please. Maynard: Hope this is what you had in mind. Me: No, it's better. Maynard: Cause this is what you're getting. Me: Thank you, sir. May I have another?
Love all your vids, Chris! Been waiting a long time for this one. So cool how you were able to identify and break down all of those little "-isms" of Phil's. Distortion over deeper and lower notes is something I'm very interested to hear you cover more of
Great work man... But I must say it is fascinating to listen to you at 3AM while my mom is next door sleepin(I'm 15 that's why my mom is next door) But ey thank you for making the video
Yessss!!! I was hoping that you would do a video about Phil Anselmo some day. I couldn’t click on the link fast enough when I got your email today. Thank you so much!
I think you should explain how Phil got those distorted highs all over "The great southern trendkill" and I know Putnam did some guest vocals but Phil himself has a lot of crazy highs all over that record. Is it much the same technique? Totally different sounding from his earlier stuff.
Hello! Today I found your channel and now I’m so excited! I tried to learn how to scream for four years but nothing worked. The methods I learned were painful and absolutely useless. And now, after your video «How to Scream, Add Distortion, Yell and Sing Aggressively WITHOUT Hurting Your Voice!» , I can finally scream. I would like to ask if you could make a video about Maria Brink's vocals (band «In This Moment») from her earlier albums like «Blood» and «A Star-Crossed Wasteland». She has an interesting scream that, as I heard, is based on the whistle register. So, it would be great if you made a video about her. Thank you. … (sorry if there are mistakes in the text, I’m not a native English speaker)
Yo Chris, I think that you are the best vocal coach on YT so I was hoping that you could help me with a query I have about mix voice... How high should I be able to go? As high as my highest head note (E5) or just a couple of notes higher than my highest chest note (D#2)? I feel like I can get it sometimes but as I rise up a scale (without breaking), by the time I get to C5 I realise I am in pure head. I have seen you and Chris C both hit C5 in mix but is that just because you both can go high in chest voice anyway? I really want to start implementing some of the techniques from your "Sound like X" videos but want to make sure I am mixing properly first :) Cheers from the UK for the priceless vids, any help would be greatly appreciated :)
a C5 for me is absolutely a MIX... so is an A4 if I'm doing it right. I can go up to F#5 on a good day in mix which is also about the top of my head resonance. So well, supported, your mix should basically mirror your head range :) Hope this helps!
@Chris Liepe I'm always keeping up this channel! Always glad with your lessons! I'd ask you to make one showing how to sing like Ivan Moody from Five Finger Death Punch using songs like "A little bit off", "Wrong side of heaven", "Wicked Ways", "Wash it all away", "Jekyll & Hyde", "The way of the fist"; and other showing how to sing like David Draiman from Disturbed using songs like "Are You Ready?", "A reason to fight", "Hold on to memories", "The vengeful one", "The animal", "The night", etc. Anyway... I already saved the page of your free vocal course... I wish you success with this channel...
A song that I truly think you should break down/react to is The Drug in me is Reimagined by Falling in Reverse. I'm currently trying to learn how to sing it but holy hell it is extremely difficult
So basically I spent about 6 months screwing my voice up in my car singing Pantera and Metallica full power with no lessons or even warming up I'd just get too excited. Now I can barely sing clean and if I try to scream one sentence I'll lose my voice. Any idea how I can repair my voice so I can start all over and learn the right way?
Hey Chris, I have been watching your videos lately to be able to learn the vocal techniques especially the distorted vocal techniques. I apriciate what you are doing and I think you are doing it great. And thank you alot for making these videos. After all, one question comes to my mind. Do you warm up before doing these videos? Because you are using realy advanced thecniques and it would fatigue one's voice pretty easily if the voice isn't warmed up. I ask this question because I haven't seen you mentioning warm up the voice before trying these practices to be able to protect the voice from hurting or tiring. You probably made a video about it too but not everybody knows that they need to warm the voice up before doing practices/performing. So It might be usefull to mention on this subject more often to creat more awareness about protecting and stablizing the vocal health.
Great idea! I should mention that more often. If you go to www.MyMusicalVoice.com and fin spencer sotelo’s warmups for total destruction… that’s basically what I do before each filming day :)

Ok nm; Ivan may be **slightly** different:

So the legends were true after all...
Also I was thinking if you could do a video on "Ticks & Leeches" from Tool, it's not my favorite Tool song but has a very aggressive singing.
Ticks and leeches would be a really nice specific example
Reverend Maynard: Hope this is what you wanted.
Me: Yes, please.
Maynard: Hope this is what you had in mind.
Me: No, it's better.
Maynard: Cause this is what you're getting.
Me: Thank you, sir. May I have another?
I recall reading that it took a month for Maynard's voice to recover after recording Ticks & Leeches
Excellent Video Chris thanks
Love all your vids, Chris! Been waiting a long time for this one. So cool how you were able to identify and break down all of those little "-isms" of Phil's. Distortion over deeper and lower notes is something I'm very interested to hear you cover more of
Great video as always Chris, keep rockin' ! Cheers
Great work man... But I must say it is fascinating to listen to you at 3AM while my mom is next door sleepin(I'm 15 that's why my mom is next door)
But ey thank you for making the video
Yessss!!! I was hoping that you would do a video about Phil Anselmo some day. I couldn’t click on the link fast enough when I got your email today. Thank you so much!
You're welcome!!
How about a reaction or vocal lesson for Mike Patton's range?
Ieiiii you did it!!!! First time I comment on a video before watching it haha youre pure gold
I'm surely not the first person to say this, but your scream sounds exactly like Jens Kidman from Meshuggah on the video from the Chaosphere sessions
Lmao i just got an ad for your channel 😂😂😂 ON THIS EXACT VIDEO. I heard the intro twice and was like “hold up”
Thanks Chris
I think you should explain how Phil got those distorted highs all over "The great southern trendkill" and I know Putnam did some guest vocals but Phil himself has a lot of crazy highs all over that record. Is it much the same technique? Totally different sounding from his earlier stuff.
Chris, so how would you explain Chester's 17 scream on given up?
The metal grasshopper dude already has got this down😩🔥
Will you do David Draiman of Disturbed please?
A Daniel Gildenlow video would be nice, he uses the "break" in his voice to achieve distortion very clearly in the song "Used"
Great lesson! Please consider a video for joe duplantier of gojira and/or billy corgan!!
This video is so awesome and helpful
Can you do mike patton?
Phil Anselmo... the true 🐐
Thank you.

(sorry if there are mistakes in the text, I’m not a native English speaker)
Would you break down Chris Motionless in 'Another life'?? its such a good song and he switches a lot in it and i'd like to see how you'd approach it
I've done some stuff on Chris Motionless! Check him out in my "in the style of" playlist!
I really want to start implementing some of the techniques from your "Sound like X" videos but want to make sure I am mixing properly first :)
Cheers from the UK for the priceless vids, any help would be greatly appreciated :)
a C5 for me is absolutely a MIX... so is an A4 if I'm doing it right. I can go up to F#5 on a good day in mix which is also about the top of my head resonance. So well, supported, your mix should basically mirror your head range :) Hope this helps!
@@chrisliepe It certainly does, thanks a lot :)
The world desperately needs a metal/metalcore cover album exclusively with False Cord Chris
This is great! I know you might not see this, but if you can do a video on Tillian Pearson, that'd be awesome
Just filmed one actually :) Should be out in a couple weeks!
@@chrisliepe holy crap, I am excited haha
I would like so much, if you can make a video about John Fogerty!!! By the way this channel is so good!!! Thx!
Great video but I feel trying to use specific techniques on what is pure passion will never be quite comparable
A song that I truly think you should break down/react to is The Drug in me is Reimagined by Falling in Reverse. I'm currently trying to learn how to sing it but holy hell it is extremely difficult
You should do Dustin Bates, his acoustic performances are very good and i would like to see a video on him.
Great video! Next singer: Chris Motionless from Motionless in White, a beautiful fusion between an angelic touching voice and an angry fry vocal.
Dude I'd be so down for that. This album they really killed it. Especially Chris
Yes! Have you joined my free course yet?
@@chrisliepe I have not but I've checked out some more of your videos and I'm strongly considering it.
I most definitely was engaging my fry vocals not my false chords
