Props to you for doing all this manually, but you would need a much larger sample size is to give accurate frequency of the rarer setpieces. Another key thing about setpieces is that there is subcategories for setpiece types: points of interest, traps, protected resources, and boons. the first 4 are limited to 1 per world, but boons in a world is a random amount between 3 and 8 (inclusive). This means setpieces like a dev graveyard cannot exist if a rot trap also exists since they both are a trap, but you can have a dev graveyard and a hammer setpiece since one is a trap and the other is a point of interest. Additionally, you can theoretically have up to 8 walking canes in a world since they come from boons which allow duplicate instances of the setpiece to get picked. A full percentage breakdown of each specific setpiece would be too long to put in a comment, but the notable ones are as follows (based on Antonio32A's 5 million seed data): POINTS OF INTEREST skeleton_researchlab2 : 0.03% (shadow manipulator base) skeleton_researchlab3 : 0.03% (alchemy engine base) skeleton_miner_dirt : 7.14% (miner hat with treeguards) skeleton_miner : 14.26% (miner hat with pickaxe) skeleton_construction : 0.79% (hammer and supplies) skeleton_night_hunter : 0.78% (moggles and morning star) TRAPS Dev Graveyard : 5.60% Sleeping Spider : 19.62% Rotted Base : 19.59% Beefalo Farm : 19.60% Ice Hounds : 9.81% Fire Hounds : 9.79% PROTECTED RESOURCES leif_forest : 5.26% (treeguard forest) tenticle_reeds : 10.48% (reed trap) tallbird_rocks : 10.47% (tallfort) BOONS MiscBoon : 34.74% (additional 1/8 chance for cane, 1/8 chance for tophat, and 6/8 insulation item) Level4Boon : 5.37% (additiona 1/8 for either dark sword, panflute, hambat, marble suit, one man band, fire staff, ice staff, or cane) *these are the chances for a setpiece to get chosen to be placed into a world, however they can sometimes fail to find a spot entirely and will not exist despite being chosen. this often occurs with larger setpieces like queens gathering or treeguard forest. in reality, some of these are a bit more rare than the chances shown above
Dude! This is actually amazing information! I imagine that finding all this out manually is nearly impossible but the reason I wanted to go down that route instead of looking at code for example is that DST world generation is notoriously buggy and I wanted to try to account for those mistakes too to make the tips more applicable in practicality (like you pointed out in your last paragraph). Even though the percentages might not be completely accurate with a 100 world sample size I hope you approve of the video at large! Maybe you even learnt something even though you are the seed guy. TY for the comment!
@@-TheChosenOne I think it's great overall guide for newer or casual players, but a crucial thing you left out is the priority for the astral pieces buried on the main land, which act in a way similar to chester. If the ask 'Frogs and Bugs' exists (which you called the molehill biome), then there is a very high chance (have not tested enough to say its guarranteed) to have one alter piece spawn in that biome, and its not uncommon to even have both in that biome. Rooms (what you called sub biomes or mini biomes or setpieces sometimes) that have the tag for alter pieces to spawn have a priority ranked on their how immediate the biome's connection is to spawn (an idea that you explained in the video as close/middle/outer) where rooms with the alter tags that are 'close' have the highest odds of containing alter pieces. There's a workshop mod that visualizes all the rooms and task borders on the map: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2845091102&searchtext=voronoi Another note: for sculpture setpieces, the setpiece itself is not guaranteed to have all 3 sculptures. Even the one the guaranteed one with the pickaxe can sometimes not have all 3 if it spawns too close to an edge. This unlucky circumstance is allowed to generate since the world only checks that 1 of each sculpture exists somewhere rather than exist at the same setpiece.
Once again an amazing comment! I'm sorry for getting some details like this wrong/left unmentioned but it was a compromise I had to make to get the video out in "reasonable time". No one's directly paying me to do this so I feel like missing some details like this is justified especially with a disclaimer at the start of the video listing me as the source and the fact that I didn't analyze code! I also accounted for the comment section to mention things I've missed, so I thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I've also seen that sculpture "bug" where statues get deleted, I just didn't think to mention that in the guide sadly. The thing with the altar pieces was also something I've felt (I guess) while playing, but again something I didn't think to analyze. I feel like I got at least 95% of the information correct, but if you want to make a video of your own debunking mine, you're absolutely allowed to! I even encourage it for the good of the community. I however have been doing this project for far too long.
What a life savior, I was searching for a video like this forever, I didn't play DST for months (last played since the year of dragon fly) because i didn't have a megabase world to fight the new bosses and experience the new content, And what was stopping me from starting a world is the randomness of world generation, I played DST for 1400 Hours+ and still struggled to rush the ruins before winter comes because i didn't understand the world generation, you really are "The Chosen One" after all, now i'm finally able to start a new world without having to worry about time moving so fast.
Lmao, I'm so glad it helped. I guess it also doubled as a ruins "rush" guide but I felt that that part was important to know if you're actually gonna be able to use the exploration knowledge! Enjoy!
@@-TheChosenOne since i uploaded this comment, I have been getting a loading screen tip that says this, "Hi HKVoidKing, I hope your boss run is going well" -T, And i believe that T stands for "TheChosenOne", There is no way Klei saw this comment and started to play with me, I'm genuinely terrified by this tip.

A thing to add about the Drama Stage setpiece is that it has a chance to spawn the miner hat, a backpack and some other tools, so it's probably worth spending a minute gambling there in the early game
I'm new to DST. My world was the second time ever playing and I _just couldnt find grass_ I died pretty early, not being able to create fire. Now I know I had to hunt out geckos!
Great that the guide helped! Just know that it's random for every world and that even if you have a gecko world, savannahs will still have grass and there will always be a savannah in the starter biome!

Very nice. I just started playing the main don’t starve game, planning to play don’t starve together later. This game has a lot of content available and great value for the price. I’ll probably play DST alone though because I have no friends interested in video games
Lmao, a problem we all face! If you want to play with people you can look up some discord servers or catch a "playing with viewers"-stream from another youtuber. Also note that this guide only really applies to DST and not DS! Enjoy the game!

New dont starve player here; this video is very helpful! :) Also, it is possible for the dragonfly desert to spawn as a close biome! Source: It happened to me just the other day! It was pretty much right next to spawn, and it was the dragonfly setpiece itself! I knew the dragonfly was a boss but still went up to it to see what the fight would be like... Only to find out that it moves faster than you can run, and it quickly one-shotted me. Curiousity really killed the cat there LMAO
Lmao! Well, the answer is yes it can but only if world generation gets bugged and loops back on itself (or if you change world settings but the guide doesn't go into that). The reason I said it never does (even though I myself have seen that happen in the past) is because I never got it in any of my 100 worlds! So yeah, it's possible but since close biomes refer to the number of biomes away and not the distance away, I thought it would be more accurate to say it never is close
I just wondered is the vanilla dst have the same main land and cave ( tree branch ) ganeration just like you told in this vid oh and thats the best dst vid I ever seen well done man
TY my man! Unfortunately the cave generation in solo DS is completely different! In that game there are only 3 cave entrances that lead to ENTIRELY DIFFERENT cave maps. Then you have to find another "cave entrance" that's plugged by thulecite to find the ruins! I have barely played vanilla DS/RoG so this is about all I can tell you. I also know that the ruins are different too and you won't have lunar grotto or archives though!
@@-TheChosenOne dude for some reason I wasn’t subscribed, even tho I remember having done it before and watching your content consistently. I definitely am now!
@@-TheChosenOne not when your ruins gets spaghettied with underground lunar biome and you have to dodge shadow creatures and greater gestalts at the same time.
@@-TheChosenOne Yeah but still how are you able to fight shadow creatures without a dark sword and dreadstone armor. My point is maps in dst can be unpredictable sometimes which can be intresting or a pain in the butt.
I would argue that the quad moose nest biome actually sucks, because it can be really hard to kill one of them and then have to deal with all of the enraged children-
Pretty good guide but still some missing numbers here and there. There are actually two Frog Pond biomes the one that you described as molehill is the bees and frogs biomeand the one without the molehill it's just a standard frog biome There is also an extra set piece in the swamp that is the Buffalo Hunter trap and it has a spear and a beef hat surrounded by a circle of tentacles Could have done a better job on describing the random cave biomes the there's a lot more to it than what was mentioned A thing about Splumonkies is that if you have a lot of them chasing you really should try to kill one because if you kill one they all run away and hide into their houses dropping everything that they had so it's actually probably pretty good to have some walls that you can bait monkeys in so that way you can instantly kill them probably good to have a dark sword with it because just about every character can two shots They also have a higher chance of following you if you have bananas on you.
I see you POV but let me clear some things up! For the second point I totally mention this! At 24:50 I point out the ponds sub biome in the "Molehill" biome and at 25:44 the ponds sub biome in the "Ponds" biome. I am totally aware that there are two frog pond biomes and I 100% said that in these timestamps (although it might not have been clearly enough even with the big text). The reason I call the biomes "Molehill" and "Ponds" are to distinguish them from one another since their frog pond SUB BIOMES make them seem very similar to most players. The distinction is important because the "Molehill" biome has three aditional sub biomes (false forest, bee field and molehill) while the "Ponds" biome has no additional sub biomes. Their main biome also differs with the "Molehill" main biome being a grassland and the "Ponds" main biome being a false forest. I explain the differences between a biomes name, main biome and sub biome(s) at the beginning of the "Guaranteed Biomes"-chapter at 5:14. For the third point about the tentacle circle I totally mention that in the circle of text that appears at 49:52. I forgot to add that in the script and with how many people were waiting for this guide I concluded that I didn't have time to go change the script multiple times for every little detail I missed when I can just add that in text anyways. I also wanted to demonstrate it with a CIRCLE of text to put emphasis on the fact that the tentacles appear in a circle. Oh, and I also used that one as the actual footage at that timestamp! For the fourth point I skimmed over the random cave biomes quickly because there is LITERALLY 0 practical reason to ever visit them over other biomes. I mention some extra stuff in the data-cards too that I don't say since it would be too boring to watch me list all that stuff. If the viewer is interested, they can pause. I also do mention that they can't spawn behind the blue mushtree forest, and with text I explain that they can appear behind the other branch biomes. The only thing I missed was that they can rarely spawn connected to mossy biomes (which I did mention for the most obvious example being the mixed mushtree forest). I also mention and show everything you can find in them so unless there's some secret thing in the code that I missed I feel like I covered everything important (I also mention in the disclaimer that this guide is not based on the code but rather on world generation consistencies). As for the splumonkey thing, I have never seen anyone use walls to kill splumonkeys. I feel like I did WAY more that I even needed to in terms of keeping the player safe in the ruins so IMO mentioning a very niche strategy (that I've never even seen used) would have made the video more confusing. I also feel like keeping the monkeys off you to begin with is a more efficient way to deal with them than having to chase them time. I also even mentioned the problem of spoilage time on your blue mushroom. This is an exploration guide after all, not a ruins clear guide (so the focus is on exploration). Also, the banana point was something I didn't know about but at no point did I contradict that statement or encouraged the player to pick bananas. I also wanted to answer your first point of me missing some numbers here and there as the final point. The things you pointed out are stuff I actually DO mention/describe alternate solutions to. You could have pointed out some obvious things I DID get wrong like the Drama Stage being useless for survival (I recently learnt that you get items by performing there), or me not having posted the links and seeds in the description like I said I would (I'll get to that, it just reached character limit with all the music links). Salem (also a DST content creator, perhaps you've heard of him) posted an excellent comment relaying some numbers that were missing here and there with data to back them up. If you're gonna tell people that there's a lot more to cover on random cave biomes, please actually do mention that in the pinned comment I specifically made for things I've missed and relay WHAT was missing. You gotta understand that I'm just one guy that decided to make this for the good of the community, there might be cracks to point out, these points were not IMO. I still hearted your comment since I love to discuss things like this and I assume you come from a position of wanting to help out. Just remember to be constructive next time. The tip about the monkeys is good but I wouldn't say that it HAD TO be in the video.
@@-TheChosenOne yeah it's all good discussion always helps do pinpoint on what is true. Now you need to go into a full discussion on every single room that exists in the game those are all the Sub sub biome that make up the entirety and they actually give the spawn points for things like certain rooms have the coding for set pieces as well as just like spawning random moles in certain places most of the things are correct unless klei changed them. they love to change things and I might just be wrong on my whole thought because I got so many old numbers in my head The Monkees though do still get a lot of hate that I don't think they deserve I think it's just that people don't know how to deal with them correctly since they do just run away they are also supposed to run away during earthquakes but I don't think they've implemented that in DST if they do that would be great because then you can trigger fake earthquakes with the pillow locator or wicker books or something but yeah bait them with a item and Dark Sword works wonders for most of the cast
A guide to exploration though should still also follow the fact that not everyone is trying to rush and I know you are more of like the speedrun types and that you want to be able to identify where things are quickly. I'm more of a just interested in knowing things type of stuff I really wanted to try and make a similar thing as you did and I was generating hundreds of Worlds calculating each and every position of all the biomes but I just kind of like couldn't do it and I kind of just went very short on it you can't really great on the maths which is something I have trouble with sometimes so kudos
I guess it is also the over editing which can be good or bad in some eyes cuz you got to match the flow of where the viewers are watching and that's just like a very blink and you miss type of information and if you're already making like an over hour long video might as well just be extremely thorough.
I know it all sounds mean like I'm questioning your legitimacy or something but that is not the case. you did way more work into this than I ever did so you did an amazing job being able to spread knowledge
Useful video in general, but there is still some misinformation. One that keeps being brought up by a lot of people is at 1:21:14 for example. This is a myth. The edges of lightbulbs and rocks have nothing to do with the direction of the ruins.
Yeah I almost figured so thank you for clearing that up! It has never worked for me so thankfully I didn't suggest using that strategy at least. With me being just one person, it's easy to get some small things wrong and that's why the comments are so good! Hope this gets some likes so more people see it!
... Well, I didn't take into consideration all possible character choices! A tip for Wormwood healing is to hammer some bunnyman hutches (which can be done safely as long as you don't carry meat) for some bunny puffs. Use these puffs to make fur rolls that heal a lot at the cost of some hunger. It doesn't work in the middle of fights but can restore your health very effectively outside combat!
@@-TheChosenOne I can see that happening too. It's not easy especially with how many things DST has us keep in mind so I don't blame you . But this is why I think video runtime should be used efficiently as well not just quickly or just very elaborately. I'm not being a hater but think about it, how many people are willing to watch a 2 hour video ? Sure some will especially in the background. But most people will feel tired out even on X2 speed. And you don't have to listen to the nerds saying you missed something. Most people don't need to know or care and that's just fine 😊. Love the content keep it up
TY, most people use the timestamps to check on the parts they want or watch the video on multiple occasions but you'd be surprised on how many like long form content
Nice, I have had that once a really long time ago as well! I didn't mention it since I was unsure if Klei had patched it since (likely not but anyways).
Me? It totally depends on what I'm trying to do. I'm not a megabaser so you'll have to ask someone else for information on that. If I'm playing by myself for fun I usually base in the deciduous forest (either one) just because I think they're pretty. If they're in an awfully inconvenient location however I probably base close to the oasis desert for volt goat access but while trying to have quick access to as many biomes as possible. If you watched my DST without eating video I needed to base close to bees, so yeah, it depends on what I'm trying to do. All and all I think base location isn't as important as people make it out to be. As long as you don't base next to a meteor field or really far away from everything, I feel like you're fine (if you don't want to megabase). As for caves, I've never built a cave base actually. People are way to scared of summer wildfires IMO, I just keep an eyebrella on hand and an ice staff or luxury fan and go about things like it's autumn. I find no personal need for a cave base but I would recommend the muddy biome if you want to. There are so many light flowers there and it's really central. What more can you want! Hope this helped
TY, about 80 hours with entering everything into the spreadsheet! I'll eventually get around to uploading the raw footage of it, I just need a break from this project lol!
Not in a while sadly! If Klei adds a bunch more stuff I might consider it but don't get your hopes up! Besides this guide includes everything I currently know about exploration so that one would mainly be about world settings, seeds, exact percentages etc. Expect more challenge runs soon though!
Deff need an intermediate & expert version of this. I’d love a guide on just how to quickly uncover the map. I use Wortox and it still takes till winter to map out 😭
I see, well I won't make a video on that unfortunately since it takes way too long and I have a lot of other cool video ideas I want to do. What I can do however is tell you some tips here! So, the best tip to answer what you're requesting is that you don't NEED to uncover all the map (even if you're Wortox). That is because even if you don't see what exactly is in an area you can often know what is there based on what you can see. Say for example that you run along a road, you have already found 14 biomes and then you come across the fifteenth and final biome, let's say the Dragonfly desert. Why would you then need to reveal it fully on the map? You know that there won't be any biome behind it, you know what's in the biome already (since you watched this guide) and most importantly, you know when you need to go to it to find what you need. If you don't need or get anything from exploring a biome there is zero reason to explore it at that time. You also don't need to explore every biome period. Whatever your goal is, there will still be a biome that you don't need. Why should you then explore it? If you then say that it's because you're playing Wortox that still doesn't mean you need to explore it. If you don't need the biome, then why should you ever teleport there to begin with? Instead what you should try and do is learn where every IMPORTANT biome is. In this case important means that they contribute to achieving your goal in that particular world. Just because guy on the internet said the Dragonfly desert is the best biome you don't have to even find it if it's not gonna do anything. In this case arguing that you could get resources fast from the tumbleweeds or sanity fast from cactus is not strong enough of a reason to GO OUT OF YOUR WAY to find it. There are plenty of other ways to get sanity, and grass and twigs exist in practically every biome. If you think about it like this, the only real use you have of finding the dfly desert is to get an idea of how the map looks, or in other words, help you actually find the biomes that are important to you. With only a couple of exceptions, every biome is gonna have a road leading to it and roads are BY FAR the most powerful tool you have to map out the world quickly. Firstly they straight up give you a 1.3 times speed multiplier. Secondly they often connect to other roads that branch out giving you lots of ideas of where to go next. Finally you can analyze the roads to get a good idea of where new biomes are even if the roads don't directly head there. Often when a road takes a sharp turn for example, that's because a biome is just out of view in the direction the corner's pointing. Wormholes are also very powerful exploration tools since they can help you find annoying biomes that are for example hidden behind killer bee fields or something. With roads and wormholes you find, you rarely ever have to run along the edges of the map. If you do it just for the sake of mapping out the world, there's no point to doing it (unless you're looking for the stupid marble pieces). When playing Wortox, you rarely ever want to teleport to the edges anyways and since you know what's in the biome already when you find it, why not just grab what you came for and then move on. This way you waste FAR less time exploring and get more time to be productive. Remember that exploring has no actual innate value to it except if you find random set pieces (which are complete RNG) meaning you don't have to do it if your goal isn't to just map out the world because map looks pretty go brrr. This has certainly worked for me and by employing this mindset and working efficiently I usually find everything I need (except stupid marble pieces), and get a good sense of the world, by day 3, 4 or so. Keep in mid though that it's entirely possible to get completely screwed over and if you want things done fast you need to adapt fast and recognize new strategies that don't involve finding the biome(s) you can't find, if you don't want to spend 5 extra days looking. I hope this helped!
I think this is a lot closer to intermediate or advanced comprehension for how in-depth it goes. For a beginner's guide, I think it would make the most sense if only key locations were described and their tendencies to appear. Stuff like, "how should I explore if I want to make armor from pigskins?" Or, "What biome has the most connections to other biomes?" Stuff like boons, marble pieces, and set piece appearances are the type of stuff that beginners probably should not worry about at all, but that somewhat experienced players may like to know about. Even the question of "Where does Chester typically spawn is something I don't think a beginner needs a full answer to."
@@AeyakS Agreed! I put "Beginner's Guide" in the title since I noticed how many beginners showed up in the comments telling me the guide was really helpful!
There's a workshop mod that visualizes all the rooms and task borders on the map: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2845091102&searchtext=voronoi
Another note: for sculpture setpieces, the setpiece itself is not guaranteed to have all 3 sculptures.

Enjoy!

A thing to add about the Drama Stage setpiece is that it has a chance to spawn the miner hat, a backpack and some other tools, so it's probably worth spending a minute gambling there in the early game
Yep, I didn't know about it when making the video but people have started to point that out heh

Also, it is possible for the dragonfly desert to spawn as a close biome!

Well, if you don't wear shadow equipment the greater gestalts won't attack you right?
@@-TheChosenOne Yeah but still how are you able to fight shadow creatures without a dark sword and dreadstone armor. My point is maps in dst can be unpredictable sometimes which can be intresting or a pain in the butt.
I would argue that the quad moose nest biome actually sucks, because it can be really hard to kill one of them and then have to deal with all of the enraged children-
Maybe, a tip though is to go there really early in spring before the eggs hatch! That way you can dispose of them one at a time by hammering the eggs!
i dont even play DST anymore. Nvr knew mandrake and moonstone were similar
The more you know!
That goddamn QR code though.
You gotta do what you gotta do!
Pretty good guide but still some missing numbers here and there.
There are actually two Frog Pond biomes the one that you described as molehill is the bees and frogs biomeand the one without the molehill it's just a standard frog biome
There is also an extra set piece in the swamp that is the Buffalo Hunter trap and it has a spear and a beef hat surrounded by a circle of tentacles
Could have done a better job on describing the random cave biomes the there's a lot more to it than what was mentioned
A thing about Splumonkies is that if you have a lot of them chasing you really should try to kill one because if you kill one they all run away and hide into their houses dropping everything that they had so it's actually probably pretty good to have some walls that you can bait monkeys in so that way you can instantly kill them probably good to have a dark sword with it because just about every character can two shots
They also have a higher chance of following you if you have bananas on you.
Now you need to go into a full discussion on every single room that exists in the game those are all the Sub sub biome that make up the entirety and they actually give the spawn points for things like certain rooms have the coding for set pieces as well as just like spawning random moles in certain places
most of the things are correct unless klei changed them. they love to change things and I might just be wrong on my whole thought because I got so many old numbers in my head
The Monkees though do still get a lot of hate that I don't think they deserve I think it's just that people don't know how to deal with them correctly since they do just run away they are also supposed to run away during earthquakes but I don't think they've implemented that in DST if they do that would be great because then you can trigger fake earthquakes with the pillow locator or wicker books or something but yeah bait them with a item and Dark Sword works wonders for most of the cast

Lmfao!
Where do you normally set base at on the surface and in the caves?

Stuff like, "how should I explore if I want to make armor from pigskins?" Or, "What biome has the most connections to other biomes?"
Stuff like boons, marble pieces, and set piece appearances are the type of stuff that beginners probably should not worry about at all, but that somewhat experienced players may like to know about. Even the question of "Where does Chester typically spawn is something I don't think a beginner needs a full answer to."
@@AeyakS Agreed! I put "Beginner's Guide" in the title since I noticed how many beginners showed up in the comments telling me the guide was really helpful! I do however think there are more things to cover in terms of exploration such as how world settings impact the world! I'll leave that for someone else to cover though!
@ super didn’t expect my comment to spark so many responses much I’m thrilled this creator has such an active community
@@LolCow.Complilations TY! I respond to every comment if I have something to say! New video in a few days (hopefully lol), stay tuned bro!
