In episode 3 of this spring trapping series, Randy Newberg and Dale Evans are starting the final leg in the full trapping process: fur preparation. They take a muskrat each, and Randy walks through how to skin one while Dale follows suit on one. After getting them skinned, it's time for the next step, fleshing.
Randy puts a hide on a fleshing board, and uses a fleshing tool to pull all the fat and meat off the hide. Taking the time to properly care for hides makes a big difference in the final product whether you plan to sell the hides or make them into garments.
Finally, they transfer the hides to a stretcher to hang. They also discuss how to send the fur in to be tanned or bring them to fur buyers.

I know we have muskrats in my state, but I have never seen one. But seeing the sign you set up on, totally damage I’ve seen.
    Fascinating. Learning daily. Thanks Randy.

Thanks for the informative video. Trapping is a huge part of our history 🇺🇸. To many people are ignoring or forgetting it. Keep that tradition alive.

Great series. Brings back lots of memories. Sure miss trapping. I might have to dabble in it some more but it's not much of a deal here in Florida. And I definitely started on muskrats growing up. The best part ever was checking traps and finding a mink or some other species in there. It was like hitting the lottery. I caught a bobcat in a raccoon trap once and that was the day I didn't bring a gun. I was only about 120 pounds at the time and I found a log that I could barely pick up. I dropped it on his head a couple of times before I was sure he was dead. I was a little nervous so I left him in the trap with the log across his head (hoping he was actually dead and not just knocked out) and ran around the beaver dam checking the rest of my traps. He was still there when I got back so I threw him in my pack basket and ran home. I had the best day in school ever that day. LOL!
