Randy you did a nice job with explaining how to skin and properly stretch a muskrat. Sewing machine for the fur was a special treat to see working. This was a great video series Randy that you did. Very informative for ones that want to give trapping a try.
Randy love the muskrat trapping video, this brings back many good memories of trapping as a kid. We used to measure the length of the muskrats as this would give bragging rights with other kids who would compare their catch and size every morning before school started:)
Just a little tip . Leave some of tail leather on when u go to cut both sides it helps and leaves more fur on when go to stretch it . And go to make stuff out of it. Its good tip.
Randy, thank you so much. I have never done any sort of trapping or small game hunting before, but this makes me want to go out and expand my horizons even more. I also truly appreciated the background/environmental impact information you shared. Thanks
I'm 20 now and referenced this video when it first came out to make some Beaver pelt garments. Rewatching it now, why is it that when I finish fleshing and tanning my pelts I give them a rub on the face to feel the softness? It seems to be a universal thing that everyone does. Even Randy @ 3:55. If you know you know.
That knife is the Gerber Spine. I ordered mine as soon as they were released for the reason you like them. The blade is a very useful design. Great video Randy, thanks for continuing to share!
Awesome channel! I love your adventures dude. I have been a hunter all my life, however I have gotten into it seriously the last three or four years. I am absolutely obsessed with God’s creation and the animals that I chase after! Keep making these videos and I’ll keep watching! Thanks!
Thank you so much for sharing these videos absolutely love watching them.... here's hoping you and your family and all the people out there staying safe use that common sense
Randy I got a chance to meet the owner of Caribou game bags. Super cool. I mentioned your UA-cam show. Pretty cool! He gave me a free backstrap game bag. Super cool!!!!
Thanks for this interesting demonstration. So, correct me if I'm wrong, but you don't tan the hide at all? just scrape the fat of and let it dry slowly? Taking a paper towel to wipe it every now and then? Please let me know!
Great video, extremely informative! Quite the stack of Yeti coolers behind Randy... I know Orion made some changes with their products and strategy lately, so I guess Randy and Orion parted ways.
Orion informed me they were getting out of the hunting space. If your company is getting out of the hunting space, Randy Newberg is likely not the guy you want using your products. 😜
Randy Newberg, Hunter That is frustrating. I had a sales rep for Orion tell me about two years ago that they were getting a lot of pressure from all the camping/hiking retailers telling them that they would sell their products if they took the skull off. Although, he also told me that Orion was deeply rooted in Hunting & Fishing and that would never happen. I guess that also explains why Damon left too! I hate that they caved to pressure and potential sales to the non-hunting retailers out there. I love my Orion gear and the fact it is made not far from my home, but this change of marketing strategy has me angry with their decision makers.
You are making good use of the furs and I like the trapper hat and chopper mitts. I have use a small air compressor to blow the hid away from the body. p.s. Thank You and keep up all the good work you doing!
Rough way to make a few dollars. Chicken is rather cheap and taste good. I have a nice jacket, it's warm and looks good and soft too. And made of plastic.
I have a spot to hang them by the back foot, but I couldn't film in that spot due to light and audio not being good. Easier if you put the back leg in a V-notch or even fencing U-shaped nail.
That's a warm hat right there! I've got a pair of them. One in fox for dry weather, one in beaver for wet weather. I got a lot of good use from them during my time living in the arctic.
Enjoyed your harvesting the Muskrats. Very interesting process. My Uncle, in the Yukon, used to harvest Muskrats. I never learned what he did. I have been viewing your videos and have been learning to call ELK. Going Elk hunting this fall, … if we can! Terry, Vernon, BC
ITSstayfrosty unit 34 is target rich for elk, especially that time of year. You pretty much just need to go there and look. Lol that’s a hell of a tag!
Great and enjoyable series. Every hunt can't be big game. How long between when you trapped em and skinned em, and how does letting them sit that long with the guts in effect the eating? Love that hat! And you used my favorite camo pattern!
Depends on the species. Canines and cats you want completely fleshed. Rats have such thin muscle membrane layers, the small remnants won't impact the fur quality.
did you ever find a stencil? i think the easiest way would be find a hat in a store, dismantle it and use it as a template. i did this with a coat i like and its served me well in making apparel.
Orion got out of the hunting space. I didn't ask why. If a company gets out of the hunting space, I'm not their guy, no matter how loyal I've been. YETI sent me some coolers to try out, so I am trying them. I don't have a deal with them, but given my admiration of their support for conservation I'm happy to try them.

Wow that is a lot of work! The old timers earned every penny they made!!
My stepfather used to but and sell fur when I was a kid. Love it and truly miss those days.
Randy you seem to have a special skill to make a seemingly average topic into a very interesting video.Loved the entire series!!!!THANKS
Glad you enjoyed it!
Randy you did a nice job with explaining how to skin and properly stretch a muskrat. Sewing machine for the fur was a special treat to see working. This was a great video series Randy that you did. Very informative for ones that want to give trapping a try.
Glad it was helpful!
Randy nice to see that your wife is willing to share her hairdryer with the 🐀 😃👍
All of Randy’s videos are like a box of chocolates.....
You never know what you’re going to get
now that is really awesome to see that fur sewing machine from the 50s what beautiful work he did
Randy love the muskrat trapping video, this brings back many good memories of trapping as a kid. We used to measure the length of the muskrats as this would give bragging rights with other kids who would compare their catch and size every morning before school started:)
Thanks 👍
I love when you post this trapping stuff. Not many people put out trapping content. Very unique. Cool segment on sewing fur hats too
Thanks for the pelt offer Randy
W0W!! What a great video, this is "Special EDUCATION" Thank You for sharing all your knowledge 👍
Thanks
I hope you do. Trapping has made me a much better hunter. It requires so much more knowledge of the animal, its habits, and what it will do.
I'm 20 now and referenced this video when it first came out to make some Beaver pelt garments. Rewatching it now, why is it that when I finish fleshing and tanning my pelts I give them a rub on the face to feel the softness? It seems to be a universal thing that everyone does. Thanks for lighting the fire...
I dont know much about it but I've started to cold wash my fur in the washer machine
That knife is the Gerber Spine. I ordered mine as soon as they were released for the reason you like them. The blade is a very useful design. Great video Randy, thanks for continuing to share!

You have way too much fun doing this stuff. Thanks. J.
I try.
That sure brings me back to my boyhood when I trapped muskrat and mink...Thanks for the memories
Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you so much for sharing these videos absolutely love watching them.... here's hoping you and your family and all the people out there staying safe use that common sense
Same to you!
Great video. You made it look easy.
Randy I got a chance to meet the owner of Caribou game bags. Super cool. I mentioned your UA-cam show. Pretty cool! He gave me a free backstrap game bag. Super cool!!!!
Very cool!
Great video! I grew up trapping and always enjoyed trapping muskrats. There are few things more rewarding than running a trapline. The hat is amazing!
Well said!
No way! Just when I think you cant possibly be any cooler I see this video! The Jack of all trades!
Glad you enjoyed it.
Those stretchers look ideal.
That is awesome!!!!!
should i wash them like in tanning hide process for smell?
good to watch i use to make my school money trapping when i was a kid
What a great way to start the day. Especially during this coronavirus stay-at-home.
Thank for showing how to make hats from hunt to head
You need to add muskrat pelt to you WWL Intercontinental Championship belt. Or better yet, a muskrat walkout robe with feather boas...
Very cool video thanks for putting it out there
Great video of start to finish fur. Makes me want to break out my muskrat traps and put some fur on the stretchers next season. Thanks!
Id love to have one of those hats .good job Randy
Love the video Randy! Fur trapping is another great outdoors activity that's also beneficial to the environment
Absolutely!
Thanks for this interesting demonstration. So, correct me if I'm wrong, but you don't tan the hide at all? just scrape the fat of and let it dry slowly? Taking a paper towel to wipe it every now and then? Please let me know!
Wow so interesting 👍
Nice videos on muskrat trapping-reminds me of my Minnesota trapline as a kid! Thx
Thanks for watching.
Fascinating! Thanks so much
Love this stuff. Need more of it here in Aus land. Keep up the good work. I hopefully will get over there one day. Thanks.......Damon from Australia
Interesting topic on diy fur handling. Keep it up
Thank you, I will.
Thank you for making this video very interesting, now that's what muskrats are designed fur 😉
Yes they are!
Such a cool video!! Man that hat was so freaking neat. I’d enter the giveaway, but I think I’m a little late to the party
I'm not even into this but this was a great Video 👍🏾
Glad you enjoyed.
That was very interesting I enjoy this type of information thank you very much Randy
Glad you enjoyed it.
That's awesome hat, and hay if you want to get rid of one of those cooler, I can take it off your hands.... hahaha
Like the hat pretty cool. Liked the vidio on how they made it.
Great video, extremely informative!

Absolutely love the trapping videos Randy! Keep the awesome quarantine videos coming.
Glad you like them.
Enjoy the trapping. And how to videos.
so do i, and with the knowledge i gain i pass it on to my kids, future hunter trappers.
Doing great work Randy!
Oh no, I see a Ford emblem in the doorway.... :-) LOL
Great piece of knowledge. Thank you. Now my 5 year old son wants to start trapping and making fur products. Makings of a family business ????
You are making good use of the furs and I like the trapper hat and chopper mitts. I have use a small air compressor to blow the hid away from the body. p.s. Thank You and keep up all the good work you doing!
Thanks for the tips!
You make it look so easy lol. Entered for the hat, that would be super-sweet.
Anyone else notice that big buck just off his right shoulder?
Awesome!. I need to get out there and chase rats with you again. One great way to enjoy the outdoors.
Yes you do.
just sent this video to a vegan 👌
This is a great video! I guess there's no need to salt the hides? Loved watching the stitching process. Truly an art. Great job! 👍🇺🇸
If you send them to be tanned or sold at auction, never salt them. For taxidermy, yes, salt is often used.
Rough way to make a few dollars. Chicken is rather cheap and taste good. I have a nice jacket, it's warm and looks good and soft too. And made of plastic.
Such an awesome video to see the whole process! Randy, I won the hat and can’t wait to put it to use!
10/10 cool
Very cool episode,I like the chopper mitts myself.Wearing them
seems like it is better than eating them.(Gloves, and or Muskrats) dirtclod Az.
Good stuff Randy! Now we just need to see you do a beaver.
Amazing video! Love the trapping videos.
Have you ever hung the muskrats by the rear feet for skinning? This is what I was taught, and never tried skinning one without hanging it.
I have a spot to hang them by the back foot, but I couldn't film in that spot due to light and audio not being good. Easier if you put the back leg in a V-notch or even fencing U-shaped nail.
Very nice!!
You shold do this series with elk hide.
What about chemical tanning treatments (either commercial chemicals or alum, borax, etc)?
You have a pattern for house shoes lined with muskrat or beaver?
Do you salt or tan your hides at all?
Do you sell those hats?
you from the city?
Absolutely love you’re videos!!!
Glad you like them!
Any directions on how to make those mitts ? Those are awesome
Great stuff! Love the hat. Gotta have one.
Yes you do.
That's a warm hat right there! I've got a pair of them. One in fox for dry weather, one in beaver for wet weather. I got a lot of good use from them during my time living in the arctic.
Very cool!
Where can I get the address to send muskrat s
And what information I need and price
theres a place local to you im sure. look into furriers
Did the kid at the end do any tanning? Also do you have to dry muskrat out like that or can you go straight to salting and tanning?
If I remembered right Steven Rinella lives in Bozeman as well, small world
Yup. A really good guy. He moved here a few years ago. Another guy who likes to trap.
Lets see a beaver trapping video!!!
Nice randy
Enjoyed your harvesting the Muskrats. Very interesting process. My Uncle, in the Yukon, used to harvest Muskrats. I never learned what he did. I have been viewing your videos and have been learning to call ELK. Going Elk hunting this fall, … if we can! Terry, Vernon, BC
Randy! I finally drew an archery Elk tag in NM unit 34 for the first two weeks of September. Any quick tips bud?
ITSstayfrosty unit 34 is target rich for elk, especially that time of year. You pretty much just need to go there and look. Lol that’s a hell of a tag!
If you ever get a elk tag in northern utah id love to glass with you and learn some about elk hunting
check into the weibe small pelt one handed scraper .you will like it a lot better for muskrat.
Great and enjoyable series. Every hunt can't be big game. How long between when you trapped em and skinned em, and how does letting them sit that long with the guts in effect the eating? Love that hat! And you used my favorite camo pattern!
I often skin them the same day, or put them in a fridge and skin them no later than the following day. Just depends on how many I have.
Is there a reason you don't ring the hind feet / tail?
Randy, I've used the conbear body traps for big beaver, but would a smaller one work on rats?
Yup. I've caught lots of them in 110 conibears.
Your hand muff is inside out. LoL : )
I really like these trapping videos and the style of these videos as well !!
As someone who has never worked a hide, how do I know if there is more material to scrape off after it dries? Really informative for a suburban kid.👍
Depends on the species. Canines and cats you want completely fleshed. Rats have such thin muscle membrane layers, the small remnants won't impact the fur quality.
Do you have to treat the hide with anything, or is just stretching and drying enough?
how did the hides get tanned bark or
I got 9 muskrats that I'm going to tan. Where do I get the stencil?
did you ever find a stencil? i think the easiest way would be find a hat in a store, dismantle it and use it as a template. i did this with a coat i like and its served me well in making apparel.
How do you tan a hide DIY?
Randy may be going through a midlife crisis. There is a ford raptor in the background and a pile of yeti coolers.
Eric Hugh I’m wondering the same thing Randy, heard your explanation on the Raptor but what about Yeti/ no Orion?
Orion got out of the hunting space. I didn't ask why. If a company gets out of the hunting space, I'm not their guy, no matter how loyal I've been. YETI sent me some coolers to try out, so I am trying them. I don't have a deal with them, but given my admiration of their support for conservation I'm happy to try them.
Randy Newberg, Hunter love it, thanks Randy, thanks for keeping up the content!
You should try a video on brain tanning a muskrat
I send furs off for tanning.
Years ago, I routinely shot muskrats out of my small pond to protect the dam. Wish I'd known all this then. I just tossed them away.
Now you know.
