I just processed a coyote pelt for the first time myself. Based on your video instruction I was able to do a half decent job. Outside of some beginner mistakes that I made, leaving it to dry too long before flipping and left a little more grizzle around the head then I should have. your video was excellent and very helpful. Thank you for your teachings! 🍻🇨🇦
Another great video Ed. A very good trapper taught me to borax the entire hide prestretching which eliminates the need to turn the fur - dry it fur side out. Works great! 👍
nice job on the coyote , i was told to do the ears on the k9's split and cartilage removed ,if they don't doc you for it ,i'll do my ears like you do . they make a great presentation with natural ears.
I understand that there are those who believe in removing ear cartilage. I did it one year and my average stayed the same from the previous year so what did I gain? Lol. I
@@edwardschneider2716 i can't argue with proven ways ,i enjoy watching your videos and learning new ways to catch coyotes ,the r j set looks extremely effective ,great video.
Awesome video, very professional. Im new to hunting and just skinned my first hide and I was wondering what’s the difference from putting borax, salting, and or tanning?
Should also hold the knife flat when pushing as well. Whoever said the curve of the knife should fit your beam was blowing hit air. You should only push about 2" of flesh at a time,if the knife fits the beam you are pushing 7 plus inches of flesh and that gets you in trouble
The next process would be either tan it yourself or ship to a tannery by mail. They can garmet tan it for you. Personally, I like Sleepy Creek Tannery in Iowa. They are online.
Very informative Ed and contained some good tips. I've always used solid coyote stretchers. I like your adjustable/ expandable stretchers better. I think they would allow better or quicker drying. May I ask where you find those?
Once your fur comes out of the tumbler and is finished what’s the best way to store it if the fur truck won’t be around for a month or two? Great video.
Nice video... it’s hard to find a buyer these days... I’ve just been skinning them for home decorations until the pandemic is over and find a buyer in my area....
I bought a coyote pelt that says "no stretched & air dried" i only bought it to extend the arms that of a coyote coat that i bought, and repaired , so. i need to know how soften the stiff leather, i am very new to this, do you have any suggestions for me? thanks
Amazing video! Great way of doing it. But just a small thing, to keep your fur a little cleaner while fleshing, try not to put it back onto the board where the meat and fat gets on your fur. Just something I recommend :)
Nice looking coyotes Ed. What do you think the coyote prices are going to do with all the things that are going on right now? Where do you get your corn cub grit?
I thought they were going higher with Canada Goose jackets being all the rage. Is that only from certain coyotes? I know there are Eastern, Western, etc but I don't know where you're at or anything about fur trading. Just curious.
Can you start the tanning process right after you flesh them? Basically is the drying process necessary or is that just for selling hides? Im not selling my hides im keeping them.
I understand the fur's value and uses. But what do you do with the rest of the animal? Is the meat edible? What do you do with the meat if you don't eat it?
I have composted them with great success and makes a great soil improvement. Several furbearers are edible such as bobcat, beaver, raccoons and opossum.
im from indiana and would love to learn to trap sadly no one in my family or friend group hunts or traps. my question is does anyone or Ed do you know what i should do? i love animal pelts and have had MANY since a little kid, I wanna get my own.
Same here, but I own 0 pelts. I'm from indiana, and want to learn trapping and hunting, sadly only a very distant uncle hunts and he only does it rarely. Been teaching myself because he said if I can hone my skills with a compound enough, he will take me deer hunting :/
Might be a dumb question but I am just starting out and have heard of fur falling out? Is this due to improper tanning? Or is a tanning solution needed?
Fur Falls out due to a variety of issues. One is to not getting the fur skinned quickly and either frozen or getting it fleshed and dried out in a timely manner. Try to consider your pelts as a ticking time bomb
Thank you so much any other tips or tricks you may have for a newbie? Have you ever used the tanning solution that comes in a little orange bottle? Or is there a benefit to brain tanning rather than chemical tanning? Going to subscribe and follow your page! Thanks for everything!
Great video, thanks! It seemed like after you washed them, you hung them to try fur side out, but then in the next scene, you showed us how to turn the furs from inside-out to right-side out. Do you hang them to dry fur-side in, or were those steps switched or something?
Thaw and wash fur then hang fur side out day 1 Day 2 flesh and hang fur side in Day 3 turn hide and brush fur out. Around day 5-6 take fur off and store
I would love to start keeping the hides of the animals I've killed. I've harvested over 30 deer in my life and the thought of all that beautiful fur going to waste makes me feel wasteful
I'm a decent fur handler but when I goof its always on the tits of a gip yote whats a good way to avoid this. I've been using a skinning knife around them with a bit better success but its slow going whats a good way to use my fleshing knife without popping them.
That is a harder area to do. I knick a few of them each year. I use a pretty light fleshing knife over that area and when I feel it I just flesh around it.

Im new to hunting and just skinned my first hide and I was wondering what’s the difference from putting borax, salting, and or tanning?
Borax and salt do help preserve the hide but actually tanning the fur makes it pliable and longer lasting.
O appreciate your comment
Borax and salting is to dry/sterilize a little. Tanning is what turns it from rawhide into hide
Where did you get those boards for stretching?
I have stretchers from Grawe Trappers Supply and from Top Lot Stretchers. Both are very good
Should also hold the knife flat when pushing as well.

How much money do you get per fur?
Back then 25-50. Today about $2 -$10 each
Great job Ed another great video
Thanks for the video. From a fellow New Mexican how did the recent trapping laws affect you?
They are terrible.
Where do you get your stretchers from? I don't see them anywhere online
Anymore I buy from Top Lot Stretcher
Ears are to easy not to take out the cartlege. About a minute per ear and they look way better and dont have to worry about rot.

I wish I could. I haven't tanned myself. However I suggest you call Sleepy Creek Tannery in Iowa and ask what can be done. They may be able to help
Will this process work for a bobcat? Do you add any other product
I would not wash a bobcat. I just flesh and board. I will do a video for that one
So just a quick question. I tried to follow along as best I could. Are you putting the pelt in the washing machine before you flesh it or after?
He fleshed before
I wash before I flesh. Sorry I didn't make the timing clear
Great video Ed, thanks for sharing 👍
Can just flesh and dry method work for other animals as well ? Thanks alot
It can but the pelt will need tanned. Drying the hide is just a step in the process
Do you do any kind of tanning or is that it?
I don't. I just prep them
Do you sell those stretch boards
I'm sorry but no. Made by A.W. Grawe with Grawes Lures
Hopefully your 21-22 season was good , did U ever get out to that private ground in Colorado ?
I never did. I would love to do so

What if you shoot the coyote and don't trap it. Will this method still apply? I'm wanting to make some fur lined clothes for winter.
Same applies to fur that is shot. You will want to do good head shots as good as you can.

I wish I knew what the prices were going to do because all of my four was Place back in the freezer. The corn cob grit came from a farm store in Iowa

50-70/pelt

What if I don’t have a corn cob turner machine?
Some guys use old dryers with the heat element taken out. Just getting the fur clean and a brush is as good as it needs to be
How long will the furs be ok to hang after dried can u leave them hanging from November December until end of season in March thanks in advance
They are generally good through March. If you can't get them sold just bundle and freeze them.
How much will it cost to have a pelt done? I have 2 Bobcats and a couple coyotes??
I don't do custom fleshing.
