When you were at the dyno my guess was 90 whp and when you hit 88 I was like "Poor Alex"
But as we all know Mx-5's are great almost no matter what. Hope the best for the car!

To one and all telling me the tyres are on wrong.....THE TYRES ARE NON-DIRECTIONAL! I think I'll dedicate a video to this as it's actually quite interesting.

While this has great potential to be an awesome little series, for anybody who's watched MCM, that's going to be what everybody compares it to. As far as I know, not possible to beat it. It just comes off as repetitive even though I'm sure it's just a coincidence. Best of luck and happy modding. I will keep an open mind :)

thetassieboys martys mx5 was cool, it made me want to get a miata lol.
i think a engine swap would be alot better than turbo conversion, either a 13b rotary or the L3-VDT (2.3L DISI Turbo, mazdaspeed engine, 260bhp standard, just a turbo and fuel pump upgrade and remap away from 350bhp)
Or even a good ole Peripheral Port 12a

@7:10 you're not a moron mate. Its a common MX-5 problem that causes you to shift from 2nd to 5th. Motors mounts and diff mounts will remedy this! Happy MX-5'ing!

Gonna love this serie, im planning to start my own mx5 project- here in belgium (not a car friendly country :p)
90hp ATW? Oh god. Mine made 123 ATW with extractors, exhaust, CAI, bigger injectors and a megasquirt/tune :) (1.8l 1996 at 190kms) managed a 16.2 1/4 mile too. Anyway definitely looking forward to your build :)
First mod you should do is advance the timing by 4 degrees and run premium. You get a nice power bump above 4k.

When i took that test on CT about car mods i got a mk1 mx5 cummins diesel swap with googly eyes. Just thought i'd mention seeing as this video makes it relevant
I'm not sure but aren't the tyres the wrong way on the car? The pattern is supposed to push the water outwards when driving forwards but in the case like they are on the video, they're pushing it into the middle of the tyre? Car Throttle

Question: how do you measure bhp and exact torque on a dyno? Usually it should give you only the WHP, how can you measure or estimate the transmission losses?

113 at the crank and 88 at the wheels is pretty shitty for a BP. I've seen completely stock well maintained B6 engines put down over 90 on the wheels. Check your spark plugs, plug wires, air filter, oil, ignition timing, belts and if you know how to remove a cam cover, check the timing belt too on the off chance that it's not up to spec. Some other possible contenders for the low power could be low compression from worn piston rings, a rusted out exhaust or clogged injectors. In any case, don't go putting on a sports exhaust before fixing the stuff that's already fucked, it'll make it harder to determine any actual gains.
Aron Daughety It's a 1.8, you can easily recognize it by looking at the thermostat for the cooler. They're shaped differently in the 1.6 and 1.8.

get it turboed! had mine on a td04 running about 210 bhp..that got me into 13's..adjust your timing to 14 degrees, cheap mod and will give a little bit..

Alex Kersten do you want to buy some tuning books?i have some for sale? also if not turboing yet,get an expansion chamber for the intake and route the air filter away from the exhaust and up behind the headlamp, and get a nasa vent..i also have one of them for sale!
Pretty sure a turbo could bring it higher than 180 if you bring up to pressure

Phil needs a 101 mm turbo...along with new pistons, cams, exhaust, clutch, brakes, fuel system, bearings, and a grenade shifter knob. And a hard top over a roll cage.
Someone needs to show this man how to buff a car, that stock single stage red fades bad, but can be brought back to like new or better VERY easily!

S Miller but its really so they can keep the cars cool between runs, by not having the car running to move forward in line. u will notice others behind them all waiting to run on the track also, that is the line-up, they dont have to push very far and their cars are light enough on flat surface so...

Last time, you said you wanted the best mx-5 going, so why are you aiming for 14 seconds? I mean, I know its a start, but still, with a high boost turbo, exhaust, cams and valves (not to mention an ecu remap) I would expect low 13's. Just depends how far you wanna go with this.

how does a dyno calculate bhp? I thought it was only wheel horse power. Does it just have a percentage that it guesses for drivetrain loss?

Sam Corson Great tyre, yeah. Still haven't lost traction in dry or wet (my previous crap tyres lost traction all the damn time!).
What's wrong with Rotas? Quite a lot of MX-5s are running them and I never heard about them breaking tbh.
Also, there's still a bit of power left after 6000rpm :)
Alfred van Kuik They make fakes wheels. They steel the design of very famous brands like work and volk and copy them and sold there wheels cheaper.
Alfred van Kuik The problem with Rotas is that they're a stolen design. They're a replica of a Hayashi Streets wheel. This is of course, coupled with the fact that they're very poor quality. The reason you see a lot of people using Rota wheels is because they're relatively cheap. That's it. They have no other redeeming feature aside from price.
